Factor VII Activity Is an Independent Predictor of Cardiovascular Mortality in Elderly Women of a Sicilian Population: Results of an 11-year Follow-up

2002

SummaryThe aim of the Epidemiological project “Ventimiglia di Sicilia” is to identify the cardiovascular risk factors in a Sicilian population with a low risk profile and healthy nutritional habits. The risk of cardiovascular mortality in older subjects (over 60 years of age) is presented for an 11 year follow-up. Females showed higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity and higher levels of total, LDL and HDL cholesterol, factor VII activity and fibrinogen compared to males. Cardiovascular mortality was related to hypertension and obesity in males, to high factor VII activity, obesity and diabetes mellitus in females. In a Logistic Regression model the same variables wer…

Protective role of the Mediterranean diet on several cardiovascular risk factors: Evidence from Sicily, southern Italy

2014

Background and aims: Epidemiological studies conducted in European countries demonstrated that the adoption of a Mediterranean diet protect against clustered risk factors but those evaluating such benefits specifically in southern Italy are scarce. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the association between the adherence to the Mediterranean diet and cardiovascular risk factors obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Methods and results: A cross-sectional population-based survey including 3090 subjects was conducted in Sicily, southern Italy. Food intake was evaluated through a validated food frequency questionnaire and adherence to the dietary pattern was assessed using the MedDietScore…

Plasma aldosterone and its relationship with left ventricular mass in hypertensive patients with early-stage chronic kidney disease

2014

Plasma aldosterone concentrations (PACs) are often increased in the advanced stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD); however, PAC has not been fully investigated in early CKD. Moreover, little is known about the relationship between aldosteronemia and left ventricular (LV) mass in subjects with mild-to-moderate CKD. The study objectives were to analyze PAC, LV mass (LVM), LV geometry and their relationships, in a group of hypertensive patients with stage I-III CKD. One hundred ninety-five hypertensive patients with stage I-III CKD were enrolled and compared with a control group of 82 hypertensive patients without renal dysfunction. LVM was higher in subjects with CKD than in the control gro…

Subclinical atherosclerosis and fetuin-A plasma levels in essential hypertensive patients

2012

The intima-media thickness (IMT) is considered as a surrogate marker for atherosclerotic disease. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship of carotid IMT with fetuin-A in patients with essential hypertension (EH) and normal renal function. The plasma levels of fetuin-A, interleukin 6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and the biomarker of oxidative stress 8-iso-PGF2alpha were assayed in samples from 105 untreated EH patients. Carotid IMT measurements were also performed. EH was studied overall and after dividing in EH with IMT ≥ and 0.9 mm (AUC (area under the curve) 0.738, P<0.0001). Our results suggest that in EH, fetuin-A is associated with the IMT independently of oxid…

DOSE-RELATED EFFICACY OF A CONTINUOUS INTRACISTERNAL NIMODIPINE TREATMENT ON CEREBRAL VASOSPASM IN THE RAT DOUBLE SUBARACHNOID HEMORRHAGE MODEL

2009

Objective Intracisternal continuous therapy is a concept in the treatment of cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effect of intracisternal nimodipine after induced vasospasm. Methods Sixty-five male Wistar rats were randomized into 4 groups: the control sham-operated group, the control subarachnoid hemorrhage-only group, and the treatment groups receiving 5 or 10 microL/hour of intracisternal nimodipine continuously for 5 days via subcutaneously implanted Alzet osmotic pumps (Durect Corp., Cupertino, CA). Vasospasm was analyzed 5 days later by means of digital subtraction angiography. Morphological examination of the brain…

Does sympathetic overactivation feature all hypertensives? Differences of sympathovagal balance according to night/day blood pressure ratio in patien…

2015

When evaluating the 'night/day BP ratio', both hypertensives and normotensives can be arbitrarily classified into four groups: extreme dippers (ratio ⩽0.8), dippers (0.8<ratio ⩽0.9), mild dippers (0.9<ratio⩽1.0) and reverse dippers (ratio ⩾1.0). Reverse and mild dipper hypertensives have poorer prognoses compared with the physiological dipper profile, but the prognostic relevance of the extreme dipper profile remains uncertain. The evaluation of heart rate variability (HRV), obtained by 24-h Holter ECG monitoring, is the most frequently used noninvasive form of assessment of the activity of the autonomic nervous system. Reverse and mild dipper hypertensives have reduced HRV, indicating an o…

Validation of an atrial fibrillation risk algorithm in whites and African Americans.

2010

Background We sought to validate a recently published risk algorithm for incident atrial fibrillation (AF) in independent cohorts and other racial groups. Methods We evaluated the performance of a Framingham Heart Study (FHS)-derived risk algorithm modified for 5-year incidence of AF in the FHS (n = 4764 participants) and 2 geographically and racially diverse cohorts in the age range 45 to 95 years: AGES (the Age, Gene/Environment Susceptibility-Reykjavik Study) (n = 4238) and CHS (the Cardiovascular Health Study) (n = 5410, of whom 874 [16.2%] were African Americans). The risk algorithm included age, sex, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, electrocardiographic PR interval, hypertens…

Ambulatory monitoring of systolic hypertension in the elderly: Eprosartan/hydrochlorothiazide compared with losartan/hydrochlorothiazide (INSIST tria…

2010

Introduction: Systolic hypertension is very common in the elderly and is strongly associated with the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. The control of systolic hypertension is difficult and most patients require combination antihypertensive therapy. Few data are available regarding the efficacy of angiotensin II receptor antagonists on systolic hypertension of the elderly. The aim of this double-blind, double-dummy, randomized, parallel-group, multicenter study was to assess the efficacy of eprosartan 600 mg in combination with hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ)12.5 mg in comparison with losartan 50 mg in combination with HCTZ 12.5 mg, in reducing blood pressure in elderly patients…

Associations between serum uric acid concentrations and metabolic syndrome and its components in the PREDIMED study.

2015

Several studies have demonstrated a relationship between increased serum uric acid (SUA) concentrations and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the oriental population. However, to the best of our knowledge, the association between SUA and MetS has never been investigated in elderly European individuals at high cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to conduct a cross-sectional and prospective evaluation of the associations between SUA concentrations and the MetS in elderly individuals at high cardiovascular risk.Men and women (55-80 years of age) from different PREDIMED (Prevención con DIeta MEDiterránea) recruiting centers were studied. Baseline cross-sectional (n = 441…

Diabetic and non-diabetic subjects with ischemic stroke: Differences, subtype distribution and outcome

2008

Abstract Background and aim Diabetes mellitus increases the risk of stroke, and pathophysiological changes of diabetic cerebral vessels may differ in comparison with non-diabetic ones; nonetheless, the clinical and prognostic profile of stroke in diabetic patients is not yet fully understood. On this basis, the aim of our study was to evaluate cerebrovascular risk factor prevalence in diabetic stroke patients in comparison with non-diabetics, to analyze whether diabetics have a different prevalence of stroke subtypes as classified by the TOAST classification, and determine whether diabetics and non-diabetics have a different prognosis. Methods and results We enrolled 102 diabetics and 204 n…
