Signum Sanctae Crucis. Iconologia del Crocifisso nella lezione di Heinrich Pfeiffer S.J.
2011
The paper starts from a recent conference (Signum Sanctae Crucis. Pathways of art and faith at the Diocesan Museum), organized by the Diocesan Museum of Mazara del Vallo (2-3 April 2011) on the occasion of the restoration and exhibition of the precious fifteenth-century wooden crucifix that for centuries has been kept at the San Michele Arcangelo Benedictine Monastery. The event involved some authoritative scholars on theology and Christian art and ended with the lectio magistralis by Heinrich Pfeiffer S.J. – a world-famous scholar and an emeritus professor of Iconology and History of Christian art at the Pontifical Gregorian University – on the theme of the imagery of the crucifix in the M…

On Pseudofunctors Sending Groups to 2-Groups
2023
For a category B with finite products, we first characterize pseudofunctors from B to Cat whose corresponding opfibration is cartesian monoidal. Among those, we then characterize the ones which extend to pseudofunctors from internal groups to 2-groups. If B is additive, this is the case precisely when the corresponding opfibration has groupoidal fibres.

A combined molecular typing approach does not discriminate Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 strains of a predominant sequence-based type in Palermo…
2009
Summary: The sequence-based type 1,4,3,1,1,1 of Legionella pneumophila sg.1 is predominant in the Palermo city environment since several years. In this study, extended sequence-based typing and pulsed field gel electrophoresis were used in a combined approach in the aim to enhance discriminatory power of the molecular typing procedures. However, probably due to a common environmental reservoir and genetic stability, most of the strains circulating in the geographic area under study belong to the same clone and are, consequently, indistinguishable by molecular typing. Investigations of clinical cases and tracing to their environmental source require caution and support from sound epidemiolog…
Genotypic characterization of lactic acid bacteria isolated from traditional Pecorino Siciliano cheese
2008
A total of 468 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolates from the interior of six traditional Pecorino Siciliano cheeses during ripening (1, 30 and 90 days) were characterized genotypically in order to assess the biodiversity within this wild microbial population. Two DNA-based technique, PCR and PFGE were used for genetic typing of isolates. Of the 468 isolates, species-specific PCR analysis showed that 79, 58, 2, 9 and 4 isolates reacted with primers for Lactobacillus paracasei, Lb. plantarum, Lb. pentosus, Lb. rhamnosus and Lb. curvatus, respectively and no isolates reacted with the Lb. casei primers. Genus-specific PCR analysis showed that 59 isolates reacted positively with the lactococcal p…
PFGE: importance in food quality.
2010
In late 19 century, great interest has arisen for food quality. This is referred as absence of pathogens in food (safety for consumers) and as nutritional quality of food (organoleptic characteristics). Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) is, among the molecular techniques developed in the last years, one of the most reliable, discriminative and reproducible technique. It can be used in clinical field for the identification of pathogens and the origin of outbreaks, and in food microbiology for the identification of pathogens (food borne disease surveillance) or of microorganisms responsible for the organoleptic characteristics of food. The present article shows some useful patents relat…
