The wide-field imager for IXO: status and future activities

2010

The Wide Field Imager (WFI) of the International X-ray Observatory (IXO) is an X-ray imaging spectrometer based on a large monolithic DePFET (Depleted P-channel Field Effect Transistor) Active Pixel Sensor. Filling an area of 10 x 10 cm2 with a format of 1024 x 1024 pixels it will cover a field of view of 18 arcmin. The pixel size of 100 x 100 μm2 corresponds to a fivefold oversampling of the telescope's expected 5 arcsec point spread function. The WFI's basic DePFET structure combines the functionalities of sensor and integrated amplifier with nearly Fano-limited energy resolution and high efficiency from 100 eV to 15 keV. The development of dedicated control and amplifier ASICs allows for…

Systematic reproduction and distribution, duplication of any material in this paper for a fee or for commercial purposes, or modification of the content of the paper are prohibited. The Wide Field Imager (WFI) is one of the two instruments of the ATHENA astrophysics space mission approved by ESA as the second large mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 Science Programme. The WFI, based on a large array of depleted field effect transistors (DEPFET), will provide imaging in the 0.2-15 keV band over a 40'x40' field of view, simultaneously with spectrally an…

Flavonols and flavan-3-ols as modulators of xanthine oxidase and manganese superoxide dismutase activity.

2014

Experiments were performed to assess the dose-dependent effects of quercetin, kaempferol, (+) catechin, and (-) epicatechin on superoxide radical production through the modulation of manganese superoxide dismutase and xanthine oxidase activities. The experiments were carried out at flavanoid concentrations ranging from 1 µM to 100 µM. This investigation highlighted that flavonols induced opposite effects on superoxide radical production at different doses, i.e. pro-oxidant at the highest concentration (100 µM) and anti-oxidant at the lowest concentration (1 µM). Similar behaviors were observed for xanthine oxidase with flavan-3ols. The diastereoisomer (the catechin) acted as a stronger radi…

Zipf’s Law and World Income Distribution

2008

The aim of this article is to demonstrate regularity in the world income distribution. In particular, using GDP per capita data for the period 1980 to 2004, the article shows that the world income distribution follows the well know 'rank-size rule'.

The 'power' of tourism in Portugal

2012

The author analyses the upper tail of the distribution of tourism supply in Portugal from 2002 to 2009, using data from the Instituto Nacional de Estatística database. Tourism supply is defined in terms of the lodging capacity of hotel establishments in about 250 tourist destinations. The paper shows that the empirical distribution of tourism supply in Portugal is heavy-tailed and consistent with a power law behaviour in its upper tail. Such behaviour seems to be stable over the years, provided that, for the time horizon covered by the data sets, the scaling parameter is always close to the value of two. The power law hypothesis is tested positively through the use of graphical and analyti…

The dual and the double of a Hopf algebroid are Hopf algebroids

2017

Let $H$ be a $\times$-bialgebra in the sense of Takeuchi. We show that if $H$ is $\times$-Hopf, and if $H$ fulfills the finiteness condition necessary to define its skew dual $H^\vee$, then the coopposite of the latter is $\times$-Hopf as well. If in addition the coopposite $\times$-bialgebra of $H$ is $\times$-Hopf, then the coopposite of the Drinfeld double of $H$ is $\times$-Hopf, as is the Drinfeld double itself, under an additional finiteness condition.

Topological Hopf algebras, quantum groups and deformation quantization

2003

After a presentation of the context and a brief reminder of deformation quantization, we indicate how the introduction of natural topological vector space topologies on Hopf algebras associated with Poisson Lie groups, Lie bialgebras and their doubles explains their dualities and provides a comprehensive framework. Relations with deformation quantization and applications to the deformation quantization of symmetric spaces are described

Imaging and biochemical biomarkers of psychiatric comorbidities in a rat epilepsy model

2018

Aims: Biomarkers of epilepsy-associated psychiatric comorbidities represent a powerful tool for an early diagnosis and personalized therapy in patients with epilepsy. Here, in order to identify new candidates as biomarkers of epilepsy comorbidities, alterations in brain metabolic activity and serotonergic neurotransmission in a rat post-status epilepticus model were explored and cross-correlated with alterations in various neurobehavioral and biochemical parameters. Methods: Status epilepticus was induced in twelve female Sprague Dawley rats by lithium chloride-pilocarpine treatment. µPET analysis to determine [18F]FDG uptake and [18F]MPPF binding were performed in the chronic phase of epil…

Presentations of constrained systems with unconstrained positions

2005

International audience; We give a polynomial-time construction of the set of sequences that satisfy a finite-memory constraint defined by a finite list of forbidden blocks, with a specified set of bit positions unconstrained. Such a construction can be used to build modulation/error-correction codes (ECC codes) like the ones defined by the Immink-Wijngaarden scheme in which certain bit positions are reserved for ECC parity. We give a lineartime construction of a finite-state presentation of a constrained system defined by a periodic list of forbidden blocks. These systems, called periodic-finite-type systems, were introduced by Moision and Siegel. Finally, we present a linear-time algorithm for con…
