Spin polarization in electrodeposited thin films of the molecule-based magnetic semiconductor Cr5.5(CN)12·11.5H2O

2013

The magnetoresistance (MR) effect of thin films of the Prussian Blue Analogue (PBA) Cr5.5(CN)12·11.5H2O, prepared by electrochemical deposition, has been measured using the standard two-point probe method. This molecule-based ferrimagnetic material, with a Tc = 240 K, exhibits MR up to 2% at 6 T and 200 K.

What is the order of the two-dimensional polymer escape transition?

2007

An end-grafted flexible polymer chain in three-dimensional space between two pistons undergoes an abrupt transition from a confined coil to a flowerlike conformation when the number of monomers in the chain, $N$, reaches a critical value. In two-dimensional (2D) geometry, excluded-volume interactions between monomers of a chain confined inside a strip of finite length $2L$ transform the coil conformation into a linear string of blobs. However, the blob picture raises questions about the nature of this escape transition. To check theoretical predictions based on the blob picture we study 2D single-polymer chains with excluded-volume interactions and with one end grafted in the middle of a st…

Coarse Graining of Short Polythylene Chains for Studying Polymer Crystallization.

2015

We derive coarse-grained models of polyethylene in the melt state with the aim to study polymer crystallization. This requires a low level of coarse-graining:  We use a mapping of two CH2 groups onto one bead. The coarse-grained beads are connected with harmonic springs, an optimized angular potential, and an optional torsional potential. Coarse-grained potentials are derived from detailed all-atom simulations, and an optimized form of the force field is then derived which achieves a good accuracy in reproducing the static properties of the chains. We address the question over which temperature range such models can be used, and in particular if the model is capable of reproducing the phase…

Simulation of Phase Transitions of Single Polymer Chains: Recent Advances

2006

The behaviour of a flexible polymer chain in solvents of variable quality in dilute solution is discussed both in the bulk and in the presence of an adsorbing wall. Monte Carlo simulations of coarse-grained bead-spring models and of the bond fluctuation model are presented and interpreted in terms of phenomenological theories and scaling concepts. Particular attention is paid to the behaviour of the polymer chain when the temperature of the polymer solution gets lower than the Theta temperature. It is argued that the adsorption transition line at the Theta temperature splits into lines of wetting and drying transitions of polymer globules attached to the wall. In addition, it is shown that …

Ferrochirality: a simple theoretical model of interacting, dynamically invertible, helical polymers, 2. Molecular field approach: supports and the de…

1995

Using a molecular field approach, the effect of interaction between reversibly invertible, helical polymers is investigated theoretically. The helices are modelled by nearest-neighbour statistical thermodynamics. If the interaction energy between two helices of common handedness is lower than that of oppositely handed ones, a critical temperature Tc exists, below which the system spontaneously must leave the racemic state, though there is no contact to any chiral centre or force. This is analogous to the second-order phase transition of ferromagnets. The critical point increases with molecular weight and optical persistence of the helices. At the critical point the system is highly sensitiv…

Communication: Protein dynamical transition vs. liquid-liquid phase transition in protein hydration water

2013

In this work, we compare experimental data on myoglobin hydrated powders from elastic neutron scattering, broadband dielectric spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. Our aim is to obtain new insights on the connection between the protein dynamical transition, a fundamental phenomenon observed in proteins whose physical origin is highly debated, and the liquid-liquid phase transition (LLPT) possibly occurring in protein hydration water and related to the existence of a low temperature critical point in supercooled water. Our results provide a consistent thermodynamic/dynamic description which gives experimental support to the LLPT hypothesis and further reveals how fundamental …

PREDICTION OF THERMODYNAMIC INSTABILITIES OF PROTEIN SOLUTIONS FROM SIMPLE PROTEIN-PROTEIN INTERACTIONS

2013

Statistical thermodynamics of protein solutions is often studied in terms of simple, microscopic models of particles interacting via pairwise potentials. Such modelling can reproduce the short range structure of protein solutions at equilibrium and predict thermodynamics instabilities of these systems. We introduce a square well model of effective protein-protein interaction that embeds the solvent's action. We modify an existing model [45] by considering a well depth having an explicit dependence on temperature, i.e. an explicit free energy character, thus encompassing the statistically relevant configurations of solvent molecules around proteins. We choose protein solutions exhibiting dem…

Quantum phase transitions for an integrable quantum Rabi-like model with two interacting qubits

2022

A two-interacting-qubit quantum Rabi-like model with vanishing transverse fields on the qubit pair is studied. Independently of the coupling regime, this model can be exactly and unitarily reduced to two independent single-spin quantum Rabi models, where the spin-spin coupling plays the role of the transverse field. This transformation and the analytical treatment of the single-spin quantum Rabi model provide the key to prove the integrability of our model. The existence of different first-order quantum phase transitions, characterized by discontinuous two-spin magnetization, mean photon number, and concurrence, is brought to light.

Sliding Vacua in Dense Skyrmion Matter

2003

In continuation of our systematic effort to understand hadronic matter at high density, we study dense skyrmion matter and its chiral phase structure in an effective field theory implemented with the trace anomaly of QCD applicable in the large $N_c$ limit. By incorporating a dilaton field $\chi$ associated with broken conformal symmetry of QCD into the simplest form of skyrmion Lagrangian, we simulate the effect of "sliding vacua" influenced by the presence of matter and obtain what could correspond to the ``intrinsic dependence" on the background of the system, i.e., matter density or temperature, that results when a generic chiral effective field theory of strong interactions is matched …

Recent results from PHENIX on the evolution of hot QCD

2014

The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider’s (RHIC) energy scan program explores the phase transition between the hadron gas and the quark gluon plasma phases by varying center-of-mass energies from √sNN = 7.7 to 200 GeV and using various system sizes. The nuclear modification factor of π0 and the azimuthal anisotropy of charged hadrons were measured in Au+Au collisions at c.m. energies √sNN = 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV. In addition, we present recent results of direct photon yield and anisotropy measurements in Au+Au collisions at c.m. energy √sNN = 200 GeV.
