Phase separation of binary mixtures in thin films: Effects of an initial concentration gradient across the film.

We study the kinetics of phase separation of a binary (A,B) mixture confined in a thin film of thickness $D$ by numerical simulations of the corresponding Cahn-Hilliard-Cook (CHC) model. The initial state consisted of 50$%$ A:50$%$ B with a concentration gradient across the film, i.e., the average order parameter profile is ${\ensuremath{\Psi}}_{\mathrm{av}}(z,t=0)=(2z/D\ensuremath{-}1){\ensuremath{\Psi}}_{g},\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}0\ensuremath{\leqslant}z\ensuremath{\leqslant}D$, for various choices of ${\ensuremath{\Psi}}_{g}$ and $D$. One of the most important challenges of modern science and technology is the quest for novel and tuneable materials, the properties of which can be widely controlled by chemical modifications or external stimuli. Simultaneously, an interest in the development of magnetic thin films also gains significant attention. Abstract The present work investigated the thermal stability of tungsten–titanium diffusion barrier layers intercalated between SiO 2 substrate and platinum thin film. The resulting structures were annealed under air in the temperature range 400–600 °C for annealing times up to 100 h. Chemical and structural characterizations at different stages of the treatment evidenced several phenomena occurring during annealing under air, especially the complete oxidation of the adhesive layer, the diffusion of tungsten oxide through platinum film at particle boundaries as well as the sublimation process of tungsten oxide. Synthesis and thermoelectric properties of 2- and 2,8-substituted tetrathiotetracenes

Reaction of elemental sulfur with 2-R1 and 2,8-R1,R2-substituted tetracenes (2) in refluxing DMF affords 5,6,11,12 tetrathiotetracenes (1) in good yields (74–99%) for a range of substituents where R1,R2 are: H,H (a); Me,H (b); MeO,H (c); Ph,H (d); Me,Me (e), iPr,Me (f, iPr = iso-propyl, CHMe2), Me,MeO (g); MeO,MeO (h). The reaction rate is limited only by the solubility of the tetracene (2); 2g–h being both the least soluble and slowest reacting. At partial conversion recovered single crystalline 2g led to its X-ray structure determination. Abstract Spray-freeze-dried powders were suggested for nasal, epidermal (needle-free injection) or pulmonary application of proteins, peptides or nucleic acids. In spray-freeze-drying processes an aqueous solution is atomized into a refrigerant medium and subsequently dried by sublimation. Droplet-stream generators produce a fast stream of monodisperse droplets, where droplets are subject to collisions and therefore the initial monodispersity is lost and droplets increase in diameter, which reduces their suitability for pulmonary application. Magnetic resonance study of bulk and thin film EuTiO3

Magnetic resonance spectra of EuTiO3 in both bulk and thin film form were taken at temperatures from 3-350 K and microwave frequencies from 9.2-9.8 and 34 GHz. In the paramagnetic phase, magnetic resonance spectra are determined by magnetic dipole and exchange interactions between Eu2+ spins. In the film, a large contribution arises from the demagnetization field. From detailed analysis of the linewidth and its temperature dependence, the parameters of spin-spin interactions were determined: the exchange frequency is 15-15.5 GHz and the estimated critical exponent of the spin correlation length is ~ 0.5. It has recently been shown that single crystal CdS, illuminated by light whose photon energy exceeds the bandgap, can eject particles from its surface while the temperature is well below the value required for vacuum sublimation. This phenomenon has obvious applications to the fabrication of surface structures as well as to the production of thin films that can show good CdS stoichiometry. Fouling dynamics in suspension flows

A particle suspension flowing in a channel in which fouling layers are allowed to form on the channel walls is investigated by numerical simulation. A two-dimensional phase diagram with at least four different behaviors is constructed. The fouling is modeled by attachment during collision with the deposits and by detachment caused by large enough hydrodynamic drag. For fixed total number of particles and small Reynolds numbers, the relevant parameters governing the fouling dynamics are the solid volume fraction of the suspension and the detachment drag force threshold. Layered gadolinium hydroxides have revealed to be excellent candidates for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration. These materials behave as pure 2D magnetic systems with a Heisenberg-Ising critical crossover, induced by dipolar interactions. This 2D character and the possibility offered by these materials to be delaminated open the possibility of rapid heat dissipation upon substrate deposition.

Abstract In this paper, different methods of rare earth oxides deposition on the surface of AISI 304 steel are described: sol/gel, electrophoresis in aqueous or organic medium, OMCVD of rare earth β-diketonates. After the deposition, all the samples were reheated. This treatment was absolutely essential for a strengthening effect of the protective oxide scale. Oxidation of coated and non-coated samples was performed under isothermal and cyclic conditions. The effect of rare earth deposition is significant in isothermal conditions.
