Classification and Operating Principles of Nanodevices

2017

The chapter presents and explains the classification of sensors in accordance with their physicochemical principles of functioning, as well as the types of recognition. Several prototypes of physical, chemical and biosensors based on polar molecular compounds such as indandione, fluorene and carbazole derivatives are described from the point of view of their structure and energy. One of the most important applications of nanosensitive materials is realized in the class of memory nanodevices. The realization of bistability in molecular or layered derivatives is usually carried out through processes based on tautomers and conformers, as well as phase transition processes. Typical examples of …

Structure features and phase behaviour of amphiphilic N-tetradecyl-β-hydroxy-propionic acid amide monolayers

1997

Abstract Two phase transitions of N-tetradecyl-β-hydroxy-propionic acid amide monolayers at the air/water interface were studied by means of pressure/surface area ( π A ) isotherms, Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) and synchrotron X-ray grazing-incidence diffraction (GID). At T≤15 °C the π A isotherms show two plateau regions indicating two first-order phase transitions. In the first main transition from the lowdensity fluid-like phase to a condensed phase, dendritic growth of condensed phase domains with six main growth directions was observed by BAM. A second transition from a condensed phase with large tilt angle to a condensed phase with smaller tilt angle and a denser arrangement of mol…

The influence of hydrostatic pressure on hysteresis phase transition in spin crossover compounds

1999

Abstract The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the transition temperature and the hysteresis widths of first order spin crossover phase transitions has been studied. A decrease as well as an increase of the hysteresis width with increasing pressure was reported in the literature. The increase of width with increasing pressure contradicts the expectation derived from mean field theory. We remeasured the pressure dependence of the temperature hysteresis of the compound [Fe(phy)2](BF4)2 (phy=1, 10-phenanthroline-2-carbaldehydephenylhydrazone). The spin transition temperatures at ambient temperature are T ↑ 1/2 =289±1 K, T ↓ 1/2 =283±1 K . An increase of the hysteresis width of d Δ T 1/2 / d p=…

From capillary condensation to interface localization transitions in colloid-polymer mixtures confined in thin-film geometry.

2008

Monte Carlo simulations of the Asakura-Oosawa (AO) model for colloid-polymer mixtures confined between two parallel repulsive structureless walls are presented and analyzed in the light of current theories on capillary condensation and interface localization transitions. Choosing a polymer to colloid size ratio of q=0.8 and studying ultrathin films in the range of D=3 to D=10 colloid diameters thickness, grand canonical Monte Carlo methods are used; phase transitions are analyzed via finite size scaling, as in previous work on bulk systems and under confinement between identical types of walls. Unlike the latter work, inequivalent walls are used here: while the left wall has a hard-core rep…

Epitaxial growth and properties of (001)-oriented TbBaCo2O6−δ films

2008

Thin epitaxial films of TbBaCo2O6−δ cobaltites have been synthesized using pulsed laser deposition. It was found that the film properties are extremely sensitive to the oxygen pressure during deposition, temperature of the substrate, and the cooling rate. Growth parameters were optimized for δ≈0.5 films with ordered Tb and Ba ions, as well as oxygen vacancies. The properties of these c-axis oriented films are similar to bulk TbBaCo2O5.5: they show a metal-insulator phase transition at TMI≈350 K, ferromagnetic order below TC=285 K, and antiferromagnetism at T<Ti≈230 K.

Effect of electron correlation corrections on phase competition in Ag film on MgO substrate

2002

Abstract The effect of electron correlation corrections in the novel theory predicting the growth mode of a thin metallic film on an insulating substrate has been studied. We discuss the influence of the substrate slab thickness on the energies of formation for several two-dimensional phases, which, in principle, may form in Ag layer on (0 0 1) MgO substrate. We analyze also the sensitivity of the key energy parameter––Fourier transform of the mixing potential V (0) to the choice of correlation functionals.

Solid-State Transition Mechanisms of Ammonium Nitrate Phases IV, III, and II Investigated by Simultaneous Raman Spectrometry and Differential Scannin…

1993

The solid-state transition mechanisms of ammonium nitrate IV, III, and II were studied by measuring samples simultaneously by Raman spectrometry and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The Raman instruments were a Fourier transform Raman spectrophotometer and triple monochromator Raman spectrophotometer with charge-coupled-device (CCD) detector. The spectral data of the transitions were collected simultaneously with the calorimetric data in the temperature-scanning mode of the calorimeter and then isothermally between transitions. The phase transition from phase IV to phase III occurred through an intermediate phase II*, whose lifetime was seven minutes maximum when the onset temperat…

Phase transitions in Ag-based solid electrolytes as detected by thermosonimetry

2001

Abstract Observations of the acoustic emission accompanying the solid–solid (polymorphic) phase changes in silver iodide and silver chalcogenides were performed. It has been found that the temperature dependencies of both the number of acoustic events and their counting rate, registered when heating the investigated materials, display distinct anomalies at the temperature corresponding to the polymorphic phase transition occurring in a given substance. The phase transition temperatures determined from the position of these anomalies agree well with the results of control DSC measurements, as well as with the literature data on the temperatures of the transition of investigated materials to …
