Effect of Light on the Composition of Mitochondrial Lipids from Hypocotyl Hooks of Bean Seedlings (Phaseolus vulgaris L.).

1981

Summary Mitochondria were isolated and roughly purified from bean seedlings (phaseolus vulgaris) treated with different red light (660 nm) irradiation programmes. Etiolated seedlings were irradiated for short terms or grown in red light. The mitochondria from differently treated seedlings were analysed for their phospholipid and fatty acid patterns. The mitochondrial phospholipid patterns from green and etiolated seedlings were rather similar. This was also valid for the fatty acids from the phospholipid fraction whereas the fatty acid patterns of the glycolipids showed differences. Remarkable changes were observed in the phospholipid pattern of the mitochondrial fraction after short-term i…

Phase transitions in a single polymer chain: A micro-canonical analysis of Wang–Landau simulations

2008

Abstract We present simulation results for the phase behavior of a single chain for a flexible lattice polymer model using the Wang–Landau sampling idea. Using the micro-canonical density of states obtained with this method we will discuss the ability of an analysis in the micro-canonical ensemble to locate the coil-globule (continuous) and liquid–solid (first-order) transitions found for this problem using a canonical analysis.

Tetra-alkoxy substituted PPV derivatives: a new class of highly soluble liquid crystalline conjugated polymers

2011

Two first examples of highly soluble tetra-alkoxy substituted PPV derivatives, poly(2,3,5,6-tetrahexyloxy-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (TH-PPV) and poly[2,3,5,6-tetra(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] TEH-PPV, are presented. Both polymers have been fully characterized and the solubility and UV-Vis absorption characteristics have been studied in various organic solvents. Due to the symmetric nature of the repeating unit, TH-PPV and TEH-PPV have an inherently regioregular nature, which is unusual for PPV-type polymers. Observations from polarized light microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry indicate that TH-PPV exhibits thermally induced order resulting in a liquid crystalline m…

Chemical speciation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments: partitioning and extraction of humic substances.

2010

The primary objective of this study was to examine the chemical speciation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found in sediments endowed with different characteristics. To achieve this purpose and because the nature of the sediments influences the distribution of PAHs, we have analyzed four different types of sediments. To study the role of organic matter in the sequestration of PAHs, we fractionated humic substances into humic acids and humin–mineral fractions. After their separation and purification, the humic components were examined for their sorptive reactivity by extracting them with organic solvents; these extracts were subsequently subjected to GC/MS analysis. Our results sh…

1983

The synthesis and the phase behaviour of liquid crystalline main chain polymers are described. In these poly- and copolyesters the mesogenic units are linked by highly flexible oligodimethylsiloxane spacers. The comparison of their phase behaviour with that of polyesters known from the literature shows that dimethylsiloxane spacers as a replacement for alkyl spacers are leading to a drastic decrease of the transition temperatures. Depending on the length of the spacer glass transitions as low as −111°C can be achieved. The widths of the liquid crystalline phases thereby are retained up to a spacerlength of 13 oxydimethylsilanediyl (dimethylsiloxane) units. The homopolyesters mainly show sme…

Supramolecular Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Materials with Nematic Mesophase Based on Methylated Hyperbranched Polyethylenimine and Mesogenic Carb…

2006

Supramolecular interaction of fully methylated hyperbranched polyethylenimines (PEI) with a mesogen-based carboxylic acid, 5-(p-cyanobiphenoxy)pentanoic acid, results in the formation of supramolecular complexes exhibiting thermotropic liquid crystalline (LC) mesophases. In contrast to the common smectic mesophases of most dendritic LC polymers, nematic LC phase were observed. The complexation of PEI and the mesogen units is due to electrostatic interaction between the carboxylate groups and the ammonium end groups of PEI. LC properties were investigated by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing light optical microscopy, and X-ray diffractometry.

Calculation of vapor pressures not requiring the derivatives of the energy of mixing

1997

A method is presented for the calculation of vapor pressures exclusively on the basis of the energy of mixing, the knowledge of chemical potentials is not required. The only condition used for the calculation is the minimum of the energy of mixing of the overall system in equilibrium. The gas phase is treated as an ideal gas, for the liquid phase no specific thermodynamic description is assumed. The method is demonstrated for a mixture of two solvents and one polymer. The system water/poly(ethylene oxide), the thermodynamics of which are described by an equation that can only be solved numerically thus impeding the calculation of chemical potentials, serves as an example. Interaction parame…

Influence of Molar Mass Distribution on the Compatibility of Polymers

1996

Abstract Phase equilibria were calculated by means of a new method (direct minimization of the Gibbs energy of mixing) for polymer blends consisting of monodisperse polymer A and polydisperse polymer B. The results obtained for a Schulz-Flory distribution of B (molecular nonuniformity U = (M w/M n) −1 = 1 and 100 components of model B) agree quantitatively with that of computations on the basis of continuous thermodynamics. The influence of U B on the miscibility of A and B in 1:1 mixtures was studied for constant M w of B, quantifying the incompatibility of the polymers by the length of the tie lines. The outcome of these calculations demonstrates that the typical effect of an augmentation…
