A new phase in ferroelectric oxides: The phase of charge transfer vibronic excitons

2001

It is shown, by means of Hartree-Fock-type calculations using the intermediate neglect of the differential overlap (INDO) method, that polaronic-type charge transfer vibronic excitons (CTVE) in ferroelectric oxides could lead to the formation of a new phase. The ground-state energy of this phase of strongly correlated CTVE lies within an optical gap of pure crystal, and is characterized by a strong tetragonal lattice distortion, as well as ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic ordering. It is shown also that clusters of the CTVE phase being stabilized by oxygen vacancies could be responsible for the unusually strong optical Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) in nominally pure incipient ferroele…

90Yttrium-Ibritumomab Tiuxetan as First Line Treatment for Follicular Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. 5 Year Results from an International Multicenter Phase II…

2016

Abstract Purpose Updated 5 year results are presented from the multicenter phase II trial of 90Yttrium-Ibritumomab-Tiuxetan (90YIT) as first line stand-alone therapy for patients with follicular lymphoma (FL). Patients and Methods 59 patients with CD20-positive FL grade 1 to 3a in stages II with bulky disease (n=12), III (n= 26), or IV (n=21), and in need for therapy, were enrolled between 05/2007 and 06/2010. They received 90YIT according to standard procedure (rituximab 250 mg/m2 days -7 and 0, then 90YIT 15 MBq/kg (0.4mCi/kg) day 0; patients with platelet counts below 150.000/ul but above 100.000/ul received only 11 MBq/kg). Primary end point was the clinical and molecular remission rate…

Six-dimensional measurements of trains of high brightness electron bunches

2015

Trains of ultrashort electron pulses with THz repetition rate, so-called comblike beams, are assuming an ever growing interest in plasma-based acceleration. In particle-driven plasma wakefield acceleration (PWFA), a train of driver bunches with separation of the order of plasma wavelength, i.e., 300 μm, resonantly excites a plasma wake, which accelerates a trailing witness bunch, injected at the accelerating phase. Comblike beams have great potentialities in different fields of applications. In particular, radiation sources, such as free-electron lasers and THz radiation, take advantage from the possibility to tailor electron beams modulated both in time and energy, to customize emission ba…

A role for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma in resveratrol-induced colon cancer cell apoptosis.

2014

Scope Resveratrol may function as a chemopreventive agent. A recent clinical study demonstrates a reduction in tumor cell proliferation in colorectal patients receiving repeated oral ingestion of resveratrol. However, gaps remain in our knowledge of the molecular mechanisms by which resveratrol exerts its chemopreventive effect. We have previously demonstrated that resveratrol induces apoptosis in colon cancer cells and that resveratrol can sensitize chemoresistant colon cancer cells to various drugs. Based on its ability to activate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) in colon cancer cells, we sought to determine the implication of this nuclear transcription factor in …

Plasticizer extraction of Taxol infusion solution from various infusion devices.

1996

Taxol solution extracts the plasticizer DEHP (di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate) from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials. In order to minimize patient exposure to DEHP, Taxol solutions should be prepared and administered in PVC-free materials. Particulate matter may form in Taxol infusion solution over time, so that in-line filtration with microporous membranes not greater than 0.22 microns is advisable. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the suitability of various administration- and in-line filter-sets for Taxol application. The extent of leached DEHP was determined using a Reversed Phase HPLC assay specific for DEHP. The four tested administration-sets, labeled as PVC-free, were all found…

Interrelationship between reproductive hormones and acute phase proteins during estrous cycle and pregnancy in Spanish purebred broodmares

2021

Highlights • Steroid hormones and acute phase proteins in cyclic and pregnant mares were evaluated. • SAA and CRP did not discriminate cyclic and pregnant mares. • Pregnancy induced a limited acute phase response in Spanish purebred mares. • SAA, Hp and CRP were independent of E1 and P4 dynamics during pregnancy.

Human Oviductal Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone: Possible Implications in Fertilization, Early Embryonic Development, and Implantation1

2000

The oviduct is host to gametes and early embryos at a critical point in their lives. It is clear that the interactions of gametes/early embryo with the maternal oviduct in an autocrine and paracrine manner provide a microenvironment that enhances fertilization, early embryonic development, and implantation. Moreover, there is considerable evidence that an extrahypothalamic GnRH may play a substantial role as a molecular autocrine/paracrine regulator in these events. Gametes and preimplantation embryos express GnRH and GnRH receptor at both messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) and protein levels. However, whether GnRH is produced by the human oviduct has not yet been demonstrated. We used RT-PC…

Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) Is a Modulator of Human Luteal Cell Steroidogenesis: Localization of the IL Type I System in the Corpus Luteum1

1999

The present investigation examined the effect of interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) on progesterone production by human luteal cells and the expression and localization of the IL-1 system in the human corpus luteum (CL). Luteal cells were isolated from corpora lutea collected throughout the luteal phase. After dispersion, luteal cells were treated with a panel of monoclonal antibodies directed to leukocyte-specific molecules. The leukocytes were isolated with immunomagnetic beads. Leukocyte-free luteal cells exhibited greater steroidogenic responsiveness to hCG toward the end of the luteal phase. The treatment of mixed luteal cells (total luteal cells) with IL-1beta inhibited by 60% hCG-stimulate…

Humic acid reduces gonadotropin activity and hormonal sensitivity of frog oocytes

2005

The specific stimulatory effect of sturgeon Acipenser güldenstädti Br. gonadotropic hormone (GTH) on frog Rana temporaria L. oocyte maturation in vitro was investigated in relation to humic acid (HA) concentrations from 12.5 to 50 mg/l. HA was observed to bind to both the follicular membrane of the oocytes and the GTH molecule, reducing the oocytes' hormone sensitivity and maturation ability. It was also shown that HA inactivated GTH, lowering its specific ability to stimulate oocyte maturation.

Guidelines for biomarker discovery in endometrium: correcting for menstrual cycle bias reveals new genes associated with uterine disorders

2021

Abstract Transcriptomic approaches are increasingly used in reproductive medicine to identify candidate endometrial biomarkers. However, it is known that endometrial progression in the molecular biology of the menstrual cycle is a main factor that could affect the discovery of disorder-related genes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to systematically review current practices for considering the menstrual cycle effect and to demonstrate its bias in the identification of potential biomarkers. From the 35 studies meeting the criteria, 31.43% did not register the menstrual cycle phase. We analysed the menstrual cycle effect in 11 papers (including 12 studies) from Gene Expression Omnibus: t…
