Mobile Mental Wellness Training for Stress Management: Feasibility and Design Implications Based on a One-Month Field Study

2013

Background: Prevention and management of work-related stress and related mental problems is a great challenge. Mobile applications are a promising way to integrate prevention strategies into the everyday lives of citizens. Objective: The objectives of this study was to study the usage, acceptance, and usefulness of a mobile mental wellness training application among working-age individuals, and to derive preliminary design implications for mobile apps for stress management. Methods: Oiva, a mobile app based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), was designed to support active learning of skills related to mental wellness through brief ACT-based exercises in the daily life. A one-month …

“English Self-Taught”: Self-Study Guides for Polish Learners of English (1860–1945)

2013

The history of teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) has been relatively well described in specialist literature, yet the beginnings of EFL teaching to Poles have not received much scholarly attention. One of the consequences of this state of research is that a proportion of pre-1945 EFL textbooks aimed at native speakers of Polish remain unknown. The present paper seeks to shed some light on self-study books, popular nineteenth- and twentieth-century materials intended for self-instruction; relatively cheap and aimed at the mass market, they claimed to offer effective ways of teaching foreign language skills in a short period of time. I will analyze five selected books belonging to …

Applying Finite State Process Algebra to Formally Specify a Computational Model of Security Requirements in the Key2phone-Mobile Access Solution

2015

Key2phone is a mobile access solution which turns mobile phone into a key for electronic locks, doors and gates. In this paper, we elicit and analyse the essential and necessary safety and security requirements that need to be considered for the Key2phone interaction system. The paper elaborates on suggestions/solutions for the realisation of safety and security concerns considering the Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure. The authors structure these requirements and illustrate particular computational solutions by deploying the Labelled Transition System Analyser (LTSA), a modelling tool that supports a process algebra notation called Finite State Process (FSP). While determining an in…

Mobile Telephony in Emerging Markets: The Importance of Multi-Simming Customers

2015

Rapidly increasing sales of multi-SIM phones, mobile penetration rates above 100% and reported customer behavior all point to the fact that a signicant share of mobile customers in emerging markets tend to use more than one SIM card. A primary motive for this is to avoid making expensive o-net calls. We add a segment of exible prepaid customers, who choose to "multi-sim" in equilibrium, to the seminal model of competing telephone networks a la Laont,

A Win-Win Scheme for Improving the Environmental Sustainability of University Commuters’ Mobility and Getting Environmental Credits

2022

European Union Member States are called upon to meet internationally proposed environmental goals. This study is based, in particular, on the recommendation of the European Union (EU), which encourages Member States to pursue effective policies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions, including through appropriate changes in the behavioral habits of citizens. In this respect, among the main sectors involved, transport and mobility should certainly be mentioned. National institutions should be adequately involved in order to achieve the objectives set; in this regard, universities must certainly be considered for their educational value. These latter, for instance, could commit to improvin…

Analysis of the Pre and Post-COVID-19 Lockdown Use of Smartphone Apps in Spain

2021

The global pandemic of COVID-19 has changed our daily habits and has undoubtedly affected our smartphone usage time. This paper attempts to characterize the changes in the time of use of smartphones and their applications between the pre-lockdown and post-lockdown periods in Spain, during the first COVID-19 confinement in 2020. This study analyzes data from 1940 participants, which was obtained both from a survey and from a tracking application installed on their smartphones. We propose manifold learning techniques such as clustering, to assess, both in a quantitative and in a qualitative way, the behavioral and social effects and implications of confinement in the Spanish population. We al…

The Use of Mobile Phones in Classrooms: A Systematic Review

2022

The inclusion and use of mobile phones in education is subject to two opposing arguments, one which defends and the other which opposes their use. This work has undertaken a systematic revision of scientific production to guide researchers in their enquiries into this subject. To achieve this, a total of 60 articles indexed to the Journal Citation Reports database between the years 2011 and 2020 have been analysed. These have been categorised in six specific areas: attitude and relationship with the mobile phone, communication, educational applications and classroom interventions, tension between agents, relationship between use and performance and problems deriving from their use. The conc…

Clinicians' assessment of mobile monitoring: a comparative study in Japan and Spain.

2013

Background: The gradual but steady shift toward telemedicine during the past decades is a clear response to important health problems that most industrialized countries have been facing. The growing elderly population and changing dietary habits have led to an increase in people with chronic diseases and overall health care expenditures. As more consumers use their mobile device as their preferred information and communication technology (ICT) device, mobile health monitoring has been receiving increasing attention in recent years. Objective: This study examines clinicians’ perception of factors determining mobile health monitoring acceptance in Japan and Spain. The study proposes a causal …
