Symmetry-species conversion in CD3systems

1993

The rates for symmetry-species conversion of CD3 groups are calculated using a model in which the interaction between the quadrupolar moment of the deuterons with electric-field gradient at the site of the nucleus causes symmetry-changing transitions. Just the same phonons are considered for energy conservation as are used to describe the temperature dependence of inelastic neutron scattering experiments. For the conversion rate, a similar temperature dependence is found as has already been obtained for CH3. For temperatures around the tunnelling energy, a behaviour is predicted for CD3 that is different from the behaviour in protonated systems according to all theories known to the authors…

Thermoelectric Transport in Cu7PSe6 with High Copper Ionic Mobility

2014

Building on the good thermoelectric performances of binary superionic compounds like Cu2Se, Ag2Se and Cu2S, a better and more detailed understanding of phonon-liquid electron-crystal (PLEC) thermoelectric materials is desirable. In this work we present the thermoelectric transport properties of the compound Cu7PSe6 as the first representative of the class of argyrodite-type ion conducting thermoelectrics. With a huge variety of possible compositions and high ionic conductivity even at room temperature, the argyrodites represent a very good model system to study structure-property relationships for PLEC thermoelectric materials. We particularly highlight the extraordinary low thermal conduct…

Time-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman-scattering measurements of I2 in solid Kr: vibrational dephasing on the ground electronic state at 2.6-32 K.

2005

Time-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman-scattering (CARS) measurements are carried out for iodine (I2) in solid krypton matrices. The dependence of vibrational dephasing time on temperature and vibrational quantum number v is studied. The v dependence is approximately quadratic, while the temperature dependence of both vibrational dephasing and spectral shift, although weak, fits the exponential form characteristic of dephasing by pseudolocal phonons. The analysis of the data indicates that the frequency of the pseudolocal phonons is approximately 30 cm(-1). The longest dephasing times are observed for v = 2 being approximately 300 ps and limited by inhomogeneous broadening. An increase in…

Time-Resolved Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering of Graphene: Dephasing Dynamics of Optical Phonon.

2017

We report dynamics of the G-mode in graphene probed with time-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering measurements. By applying BOXCARS excitation geometry with three different excitation wavelengths, various nonlinear processes can be selectively detected due to energy and momentum conservation and temporal sequence of the pulses. The Raman signal due to resonant coherent excitation of the G-mode shows exponential decay with lifetime of ∼325 ± 50 fs. This decay time is shorter than expected based on the line width of the G-mode in the Raman spectrum. We propose that the unexpectedly short dephasing time is a result of dynamic variation of nonadiabatic coupling of the photoexcited el…

Phononic heat transport in the transient regime: An analytic solution

2016

We investigate the time-resolved quantum transport properties of phonons in arbitrary harmonic systems connected to phonon baths at different temperatures. We obtain a closed analytic expression of the time-dependent one-particle reduced density matrix by explicitly solving the equations of motion for the nonequilibrium Green's function. This is achieved through a well-controlled approximation of the frequency-dependent bath self-energy. Our result allows for exploring transient oscillations and relaxation times of local heat currents, and correctly reduces to an earlier known result in the steady-state limit. We apply the formalism to atomic chains, and benchmark the validity of the approx…

Phonon superradiance and phonon laser effect in nanomagnets

2004

We show that the theory of spin-phonon processes in paramagnetic solids must take into account the coherent generation of phonons by the magnetic centers. This effect should drastically enhance spin-phonon rates in nanoscale paramagnets and in crystals of molecular nanomagnets.

Oxygen vacancy formation energies in Sr-doped complex perovskites: ab initio thermodynamic study

2014

Abstract La 1 − x Sr x Co 0.25 Fe 0.75 O 3 − δ is known as one of the best cathode materials for permeation membranes and solid oxide fuel cells. Optimization of its chemical composition is a challenging problem. One of the key properties is concentration of oxygen vacancies, which is controlled by their formation energies. Ab initio calculations were employed in order to study the formation of oxygen vacancies in La 1 − x Sr x Co 0.25 Fe 0.75 O 3 − δ perovskites by varying the Sr content from x = 12.5% to 50%. The formation energies were obtained for different stoichiometries as functions of temperature and oxygen partial pressure. For this purpose we calculated the phonon frequencies in t…

Intervalley-scattering-induced electron-phonon energy relaxation in many-valley semiconductors at low temperatures

2005

We report on the effect of elastic intervalley scattering on the energy transport between electrons and phonons in many-valley semiconductors. We derive a general expression for the electron-phonon energy flow rate at the limit where elastic intervalley scattering dominates over diffusion. Electron heating experiments on heavily doped n-type Si samples with electron concentration in the range $3.5-16.0\times 10^{25}$ m$^{-3}$ are performed at sub-1 K temperatures. We find a good agreement between the theory and the experiment.

Two-dimensional phononic thermal conductance in thin membranes in the Casimir limit

2011

We discuss computational analysis of phononic thermal conduction in the suspended membrane geometry, in the experimentally commonly appearing case where heat can flow out radially in two dimensions from a central source. As we are mostly interested in the low-temperature behavior where bulk scattering of phonons becomes irrelevant, we study the limit where all phonon scattering takes place at the membrane surfaces. Moreover, we limit the discussion here to the case where this surface scattering is fully diffusive, the so called Casimir limit. Our analysis shows that in the two-dimensional case, no analytic results are available, in contrast to the well known 1D Casimir limit. Numerical solu…

Radiative phonon-assisted and Auger recombination in Si nanocrystals

2010

Abstract Recent analysis of the literature shows that the photoluminescence (PL) of Si nanocrystals and porous silicon is caused by phonon-assisted exciton radiative recombination, as well as by direct radiative electron transfer from the second to the first conduction sub-band, which is related to the Auger recombination. The PL decay curve for porous silicon after excitation with ultraviolet laser pulse has been established experimentally. We have constructed continuity equations for the first and the second conduction sub-bands, including radiative phonon-assisted exciton recombination, Auger recombination and direct radiative transition from the second to the first conduction sub-band. …
