Optimisation of sludge line management to enhance phosphorus recovery in WWTP

The management of the sludge treatment line can be optimized to reduce uncontrolled phosphorus precipitation in the anaerobic digester and to enhance phosphorus recovery in WWTP. In this paper, four operational strategies, which are based on the handling of the prefermented primary sludge and the secondary sludge from an EBPR process, have been tested in a pilot plant. The separated or mixed sludge thickening, the use of a stirred contact tank and the elutriation of the thickened sludge are the main strategies studied. In this paper a deterministic relationship between ionic conductivity and phosphorus concentration variations in an enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process is established. Conductivity shows a strong correlation with phosphorus in both anaerobic and aerobic stages, increasing or decreasing when phosphorus is released or taken up, respectively. Since the end of these processes can be detected by examining the conductivity profile in a cycle, useful information on the EBPR performance and stability is available. The Eph–ephrin system plays a critical role in tumor growth and vascular functions during carcinogenesis. We had previously identified cholanic acid as a competitive and reversible EphA2 antagonist able to disrupt EphA2-ephrinA1 interaction and to inhibit EphA2 activation in prostate cancer cells. Herein, we report the synthesis and biological evaluation of a set of cholanic acid derivatives obtained by conjugation of its carboxyl group with a panel of naturally occurring amino acids with the aim to improve EphA2 receptor inhibition. Revegetation of harvested peat surfaces in relation to substrate quality

The relationship between substrate quality and pattern of revegetation of harvested peat surfaces was studied by means of a survey and a field experiment examining influences of modest NPK-fertilization on plant colonization of an initially bare peat surface. The harvested peat surfaces varied a great deal in their chemical and physical characteristics and the sites differed in revegetation pattern. Early successional vegetation was dominated by perennial species native to nutrient-poor habitats on all sites. High susceptibility of rabbit erythrocytes toward the pore-forming action of staphylococcal alpha-toxin correlates with the presence of saturable, high affinity binding sites. All efforts to identify a protein or glycolipid receptor have failed, and the fact that liposomes composed solely of phosphatidylcholine are efficiently permeabilized adds to the enigma. A novel concept is advanced here to explain the puzzle. We propose that low affinity binding moieties can assume the role of high affinity binding sites due to their spatial arrangement in the membrane. Using p -nitrophenylphosphate ( p -NPP) as substrate, methanol, at a concentration of 4.9 M. was the most efficient phosphate acceptor tested (60% phosphate transfer). 2. 2. The branched alcohols i -propanol and i -butanol accept the phosphate better than the unbranched compounds. This work investigated the oxidative injury to human red blood cells (RBCs) by the exposure to exogenous malondialdehyde (MDA), in a physiological environment. When a 10% RBC suspension was incubated in autologous plasma, in the presence of 50 microM MDA, 30% of MDA entered into the cells. A time-course study showed that MDA caused early (30-120 min) and delayed (3-18 h) effects. MDA caused a fast depletion of reduced glutathione, and loss of the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity, followed by a decrease of HbO2. Accumulation of methemoglobin, and formation of small amounts of hemichrome were later evident. Also, an HbO2-derived fluorescent product was measured in the membrane. The …
