Light-induced proton slip and proton leak at the thylakoid membrane

A treatment of leaves of Spinacia oleracea L. with light or with the thiol reagent dithiothreitol in the dark led to partly uncoupled thylakoids. After induction in intact leaves, the partial uncoupling was irreversible at the level of isolated thylakoids. We distinguish between uncoupling by proton slip, which means a decrease of the H+/e(-) -ratio due to less efficient proton pumping, and proton leak as defined by enhanced kinetics of proton efflux. Proton slip and proton leak made about equal contributions to the total uncoupling. [EN] The aim of this work was to develop antimicrobial photosensitizer-containing edible films and coatings based on gelatin as the polymer matrix. incorporating sodium magnesium chlorophyllin (E-140) and sodium copper chlorophyllin (E-141). Chlorophyllins were incorporated into the gelatin film-forming solution and the inhibiting effect of the cast films was tested against Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes. The results demonstrated that water soluble sodium magnesium chlorophyllin and water soluble sodium copper chlorophyllin reduced the growth of S. aureus and L monocytogenes by 5 log and 4 log respectively. Responses of Young Peach Trees to Root Confinement

Rooted cuttings of Nemaguard peach [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch.] were grown in 0.18-, 0.36-, 0.90-, and 2.40-liter containers for 16 weeks to study the influence of root confinement on growth, gas exchange, water uptake, and leaf carbohydrate and nutrient content. An automatic nutrient-solution dispensing system was used to ensure uniform fertility among treatments and to prevent drought stress. Leaf area and stem length were reduced by root confinement 6 to 7 weeks after transplanting, and differences among treatments increased throughout the experiment. Versatile entropic measure of grey level inhomogeneity

The entropic measure for analysis of grey level inhomogeneity (GLI) is proposed as a function of length scale. It allows us to quantify the statistical dissimilarity of the actual macrostate and the maximizing entropy of the reference one. The maximums (minimums) of the measure indicate those scales at which higher (lower) average grey level inhomogeneity appears compared to neighbour scales. Even a deeply hidden statistical grey level periodicity can be detected by the equally distant minimums of the measure. Despite this fact, they occur in different oligomeric states (i.e., monomeric, dimeric, and trimeric). As a step toward understanding the underlying structure requirements for different oligomerization behavior, we analyzed whether amino acids at the N- and C-termini of Lhca1 and Lhca4 are involved in the formation of the heterodimeric LHCI-730. A series of derivatives of the new ring system pyrrolo[2,3-h]quinoline-2-one was synthesized and evaluated as photoreagents toward cultured human tumor cells. Remarkable phototoxycity resulted for some derivatives, especially those bearing the phenyl group at the 7-position.

Three-years-old trees of Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu [Mak.] Marc.) cv. Okitsu were exposed to O-3 fumigation during long term (one year) in open-top chambers. As a result of the treatment, chlorophyll a fluorescence and gas exchange parameters were modified with respect to trees growing in O-3-free conditions. Net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance decreased and intercellular CO2 concentration increased according to a reduction of the non-cyclic electron flow and a lower capacity to reduce the quinone pool. Abstract This study, aimed at elucidating changes in the foliar and cambial behavior in Azadirachta indica (Neem tree) due to coal-smoke pollution, has revealed inhibitory effects of pollution stress on leaf pigments concentrations, nitrate reductase activity and the contents of reducing sugars and total N content, whereas stimulatory effects were given on stomatal index and nitrate and sulphur contents. Under smoke effects, stomatal conductance was low, leading to a drop in the net photosynthetic rate and a rise in the internal CO2 concentration of leaf. Photodynamic therapy is a promising approach to treat a variety of superficial tumors and other diseases. One of its major limitations arises from its dependence on molecular oxygen, which decreases the efficiency of the therapy in hypoxia conditions commonly developed by solid tumors. The present contribution reveals the molecular mechanism of a modified thymine bearing a nitroimidazole substituent, a photosensitizer able to produce highly harmful interstrand cross-links in the DNA double strand after irradiation selectively in absence of oxygen.
