Frazeologizmy w internetowych tekstach hybrydalnych

2020

In Internet communication, which is primarily based on visual impacts (images), hybrid texts do play a significant role. Some of the most popular ones are mems and demotivators. Their creators comment upon the reality in an entertaining, ironic, or even malicious way. In the verbal part of demotivators it is phraseologisms and winged words that are frequently applied. Putting together certain fixed phrases with graphic elements leads to the process of their dephraseologization, as well as to word plays (puns) based on the polysemy and homonymy of lexical units. In demotivators one can also observe certain changes occurring in the semantics of selected phraseologisms.

Nominal Agreement in L2 Speakers of Italian: Suggestions for a Teaching Plan

2021

International audience; This paper addresses the topic of adult acquisition of nominal agreement in Italian, a crucial issue in teaching Italian as Second/Foreign Language. Building on a corpus containing spontaneous and semi-spontaneous production data from two advanced L2-speakers of Italian, I show that nominal agreement can be problematic even in the last stages of the acquisition process. The discussion of the instances of missing agreement in the corpus suggests that these are not due to a missing knowledge of the agreement rules in Italian, but instead on processing and production. In particular, some contexts prove to be more difficult than others: gender agreement (i.e., agreement …

Phrasal prosody constrains word segmentation in French 16-month-olds

2011

Infants who are in the process of acquiring their mother tongue have to find a way of segmenting the continuous speech stream into word-sized units. We present an experiment showing that French 16-month-olds are able to exploit phonological phrase boundaries in order to constrain lexical access. Using the conditioned head-turning technique, we showed that infants trained to turn their head for a bisyllabic word responded more often to sentences that contained this word, than to sentences that contained both syllables of this word separated by a phonological phrase boundary. We compare these results with similar results obtained with English-speaking infants, and discuss their implication fo…

Leksinių samplaikų sąrašo tikslinimas: bandymas taikyti Formulex metodą

2017

A number of corpus studies focusing on the description of the use and functions of lexical bundles havebeen conducted recently in order to explore the phraseology of learner language. As with any studiesof lexical bundles, the problem of overlapping or structurally incomplete items poses a particularchallenge. In practice, it is often difficult to align such units with specific discourse functions. The factthat lexical bundles do not constitute neat form-and-meaning mappings results from, among otherreasons, their being grounded in language use rather than language system. In this pilot study weattempt to test a new method called Formulex (Forsyth, 2015a; 2015b) to verify whether an applica…

Towards Teaching English for Pharmaceutical Purposes: An Attempt at a Description of Key Vocabulary and Phraseology in Clinical Trial Protocols and E…

2014

With the exception of medical schools or medical universities, English for Pharmaceutical Purposes is rarely taught as a specialist language course or ESP module at the university-level (e.g. designed specifically for training translators of specialist texts). This may be caused by, among other factors, the lack of comprehensive description of vocabulary and phraseology used across different pharmaceutical text types and genres, e.g. patient-pharmacist interactions, patient information leaflets, clinical trial protocols etc. This preliminary study is designed as an initial step to develop a description of vocabulary and phraseology, namely keywords, n-grams consisting of 4 words and phrase …

The treatment of collocations in Spanish-Catalan bilingual dictionaries

2018

Context and topic marking affect distinct processes during discourse comprehension in Japanese

2011

Abstract In languages like English or German, definite and indefinite markers serve to distinguish given/old from new information in the discourse model. Japanese, in contrast, lacks definiteness markers, but has a topic marker. The present paper examines how the information status of a noun phrase (NP) in Japanese is represented and integrated into the discourse model. An ERP experiment investigated the processing of topic-marked and non-topic-marked NPs following three different context sentences (making available a given, inferred, or new reading). The results revealed an increase in the N400 as a function of contextual cueing, i.e. the less accessible a referential expression is in the …

How Idioms Are Recognized when Individuals Are “Thrown Off the Track”, “Off the Rack” or “Off the Path”: A Decision Time Experiment in Healthy Volunt…

2021

Figurative elements in language have their own particularities, including words that deviate from their generally accepted definition to amplify our language or to paraphrase an issue. It is still unclear how individuals process idioms that are figurative or ambiguous, especially when they additionally become distracted by modified idioms that are similar in appearance. In our study, 47 healthy adults (mean age of 27.3 years, SD = 2.9) participated in a decision time experiment to determine how participants recognize well-formed, genuine German idioms alongside certain idiom modifications. All participants were initially exposed to a prime on a screen. Then, they had to detect the target id…

Aproximación a un estudio estilístico de la fraseología representada en la Crónica Troyana (Juan de Burgos, 1490)

2021

This article aims to contribute to the knowledge of Medieval Hispanic Phraseology by means of the stylistic analysis of the phraseological units, which are represented in the Crónica troyana (Juan de Burgos, 1490). To achieve this aim, this study is based on the methodological program proposed by Echenique Elizondo (2003), in order to tackle the historical and stylistic analysis of these units. From the selection of two passages referring to amor and to militia in the context of the Matter of Troy, the combinations contained in the Crónica troyana will be analyzed in contrast to the rest of peninsular versions derived from the Historia destructionis Troiae (c. 1287). This is intended to adv…
