The ambiguous role of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in wheat tissue culture

1986

The very basal, highly immature regions of dissected young leaves of Triticum aestivum L. cv. Kite formed adventitious roots on a nutrient medium supplemented with comparatively low concentrations (0.16 to 0.63 μM) of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Higher concentrations (up to 640 μM) had to be applied to stimulate growth from more mature regions higher up the leaf. Yet, already at 2.5 μM roots were less distinct and more callus-like, and eventually (at 10 to 640 μM) only a subculturable callus of apparently suppressed, slowly proliferating root primordia developed. Furthermore, at the most basal, highly immature regions growth was significantly retarded when the auxin concentratio…

Classification of Complex Molecules

2009

Algorithms for classification and taxonomy based on criteria, e.g., information entropy and its production are proposed. In molecular classification, the feasibility of replacing a given molecule (e.g, anaesthetic) by similar ones in the composition of a complex drug is studied. Some local anaesthetics currently in use are classified using characteristic chemical properties of different portions of their molecules. In taxonomy, the detailed comparison of the sequences (primary structures) of biomolecules, proteins or nucleic acids, allows the reconstruction of a molecular phylogenetic tree for some species, e.g. the 1918 influenza virus. The method is applied to the classifications of: (1) …

Individuell dosiertes Levothyroxin mit 150 µg Jodid versus 100 µg Levothyroxin kombiniert mit 100 µg Jodid: Eine randomisierte Doppelblindstudie

2008

BASIC PROBLEM AND OBJECTIVE Intrathyroid deficiency and the influence of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) are the main pathogenetic factors in the development of endemic euthyroid goitre. Goitre reduction is achieved with either administration of levothyroxine, which diminishes hypophyseal TSG production, or of iodide. Aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of treatment with a dose-fixed combination of levothyroxine plus iodide with that of an individualized dosage of levothyroxine plus iodide. PATIENTS AND METHODS After randomization 49 patients with euthyroid goitre (24 women, 25 men, aged 20-43 years) were treated for 12 weeks in a double-blind trial. Patients in group A received…

Effects of testosterone and β-glucan on immune functions in tench

2005

A hormone manipulation was performed to examine the effects of testosterone on basal and β-glucan-induced immune functions in wild-caught male and female tench Tinca tinca. Testosterone administration elevated testosterone concentration in plasma, but did not suppress lytic activity of plasma or the chemiluminescence response of blood or head kidney phagocytes in any of the three successive samples or in any of the treatment groups. Both testosterone and β-glucan administrations had a negative effect on the relative mass of the spleen, and testosterone-treated fish lost more mass than control fish. Males had a relatively larger spleen than females, but there were no gender differences in im…

Evolutionary site-number changes of ribosomal DNA loci during speciation: complex scenarios of ancestral and more recent polyploid events.

2015

Genes encoding ribosomal RNA are universal key constituents of eukaryotic genomes, but the number of loci varies between species. We assessed the evolutionary trends in site-number changes of rDNA loci during speciation in a lineage of the cabbage family, characterized by complex scenarios of polyploidy. Our results suggest the existence of constrictions to burst loci amplification in the 5S rDNA family in polyploids and an overall trend to further reduce their number. The 45S rDNA site change in polyploids tells a different story, implying loci amplification in most of the polyploid entities.

Factors Associated with Decisions for Initial Dosing, Up-Titration of Propiverine and Treatment Outcomes in Overactive Bladder Syndrome Patients in a…

2021

Two doses of propiverine ER (30 and 45 mg/d) are available for the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB) syndrome. We have explored factors associated with the initial dosing choice (allocation bias), the decision to adapt dosing (escalation bias) and how dosing relative to other factors affects treatment outcomes. Data from two non-interventional studies of 1335 and 745 OAB patients, respectively, receiving treatment with propiverine, were analyzed post-hoc. Multivariate analysis was applied to identify factors associated with dosing decisions and treatment outcomes. Several parameters were associated with dose choice, escalation to higher dose or treatment outcomes, but only few exhibited…

Evolution of Complex Acoustic Signals in Drosophila Species

2009

species produce complex acous-tic cues, so-called courtship songs, while pursuing a female. In most of the over 100 species studied so far (see thelist of these species in Hoikkala, 2005), such cues areproduced by wing vibration. Other mechanisms of songproduction include abdomen purring (Hoy, Hoikkala, &Kaneshiro, 1988) and rapid vibrations of the whole body(Ritchie & Gleason, 1995). The carrier frequency of songsproduced through any of these actions ranges from 150 to500Hz. A hitherto unknown mechanism enables males ofsome Hawaiian species to generate songs of up to 15,000Hz(Hoikkala, Hoy, & Kaneshiro, 1989).The structure of the courtship songs of closely relatedspecies often reflects phylo…

Oral lichen planus after certolizumab pegol treatment in a patient with Crohn's disease

2011

Dear Sir , Lichen planus (LP) is a relatively uncommon inflammatory dermatosis of the mucocutaneous surfaces that can present with a variety of clinical manifestations and, most commonly, affecting middle-aged adults. The disease course may be short or chronic, although most cases may resolve after 1 month to 7 years. The real prevalence of LP is unknown, but is estimated to be 1% in the USA.1 The pathogenesis of LP is not entirely understood. In general, activated T lymphocytes are recruited to the dermal–epidermal junction and induce apoptosis in basal keratinocytes. Both CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes are found in the lichenoid infiltrate of LP, with a predominance of the latter cell type b…

A geometrical framework for f –statistics

2020

AbstractA detailed derivation of the f–statistics formalism is made from a geometrical framework. It is shown that the f–statistics appear when a genetic distance matrix is constrained to describe a four population phylogenetic tree. The choice of genetic metric is crucial and plays an outstanding role as regards the tree–like–ness criterion. The case of lack of treeness is interpreted in the formalism as presence of population admixture. In this respect, four formulas are given to estimate the admixture proportions. One of them is the so–called f4–ratio estimate and we show that a second one is related to a known result developed in terms of the fixation index FST. An illustrative numerica…

RAPD evidence for a sister group relationship of the presumed progenitor-derivative species pairSenecio nebrodensis andS. viscosus (Asteraceae)

1998

The phylogenetic and phenetic analysis of 109 RAPD polymorphisms inS. nebrodensis, a perennial and self-incompatible endemic of four mountain ranges in Spain, andS. viscosus, a self-compatible annual widespread in Europe, as well asS. lividus, S. sylvaticus andS. vulgaris revealed a sister group relationship between the first two species. This result contrasts sharply with the earlier hypothesis based on isozyme variation thatS. viscosus originated from within a paraphyleticS. nebrodensis and that the two species represent a progenitor-derivative pair. After considering possible reasons for the sister group relationship found, including the possibility of rooting artefacts, it is concluded …
