Peripheral arterial disease, diabetes and postural balance among elderly Finns: a population-based study
2008
Background and aims: Little is known about the role of peripheral arterial disease (PAD)in the development of balance impairment. The aim of this study was to assess postural balance among people having PAD or PAD combined with diabetes. Methods: As part of the comprehensive health examination of the Health 2000 survey (two-stage stratified cluster sampling), 1323 people aged 65 years or older took part in balance assessments using a force platform system. The presence of PAD was confirmed with data from the National Hospital Discharge Registry. Individuals with hospitalization due to PAD were regarded as having severe disease, whereas those with solely self-reported diagnosis were consider…
How well do questionnaires perform compared with physical examination in detecting flexural eczema? Findings from the International Study of Asthma a…
2009
International audience; BACKGROUND: Questionnaires are widely used in epidemiological studies to measure eczema symptom prevalence, but there are concerns regarding their accuracy if used as a diagnostic tool. OBJECTIVES: To compare the performance of a validated eczema symptom questionnaire and a standardized skin examination protocol employed in the second phase of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC). METHODS: A total of 30,358 schoolchildren aged 8-12 years from 18 countries were examined for flexural eczema. Parents also completed an eczema symptom questionnaire. We compared prevalence estimates at the population level based on the questionnaire vs. phys…
Isolated RV diverticulum: diagnosis by cardiac magnetic resonance and 3D TEE
2014
A 16-year-old male was referred to our hospital because of exertional chest pain. There was no personal or family history of any cardiovascular disease. Findings on physical examination and vital signs were normal. An ECG showed a right bundle superoanterior zonal block pattern with low potentials in frontal plane and intraventricular conduction delay (QRS Complex 120 msg) with pseudo-epsilon wave in V1 …
Analysis of risk factors for maxillary denture-related oral mucosal lesions: A cross-sectional study
2019
Background To evaluate the frequency of maxillary dentures-related lesions and the possible associated risk factors. Material and Methods Ninety-seven participants were selected, and a complete anamnesis, physical examination and tests of occlusion vertical dimension (OVD), retention and stability of the denture, biofilm quantification, cytopathology, sialometry, pH analysis and buffer capacity of the saliva were performed. Statistical analyses were performed with the Pearson’s chi-square, Mann-Whitney tests, and Pearson’s coefficient (p<0.05). Results In 78% of the participants at least one denture-related lesion was found. Denture-associated stomatitis (63%), inflammatory fibrous hyperpla…
Polymorphisms in endothelin system genes, arsenic levels and obesity risk.
2015
Background/objectivesObesity has been linked to morbidity and mortality through increased risk for many chronic diseases. Endothelin (EDN) system has been related to endothelial function but it can be involved in lipid metabolism regulation: Receptor type A (EDNRA) activates lipolysis in adipocytes, the two endothelin receptors mediate arsenic-stimulated adipocyte dysfunction, and endothelin system can regulate adiposity by modulating adiponectin activity in different situations and, therefore, influence obesity development. The aim of the present study was to analyze if single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the EDN system could be associated with human obesity.Subjects/methodsWe analyz…
Frailty syndrome and pre-operative risk evaluation: A systematic review
2015
Abstract Background Frailty is a geriatric syndrome characterized by the clinical presentation of identifiable physical alterations and decreased physiological reserve. The assessment of frailty syndrome has been recently related with post-surgical outcomes and overall mortality in older individuals. Design and data sources We performed searches in Pubmed, Embase, Scopus, SCIELO and IME (Spanish medical index) databases from their start dates to February 2014 for original papers about the identification of the relationship between frailty and pre-operative risk evaluation in people aged 65 and over. Review methods We followed criteria of systematic PRISMA guidelines. Two independent reviewe…
Early Life Stress and Physical and Psychosocial Functioning in Late Adulthood
2013
Background. Severe stress experienced in early life may have long-term effects on adult physiological and psychological health and well-being. We studied physical and psychosocial functioning in late adulthood in subjects separated temporarily from their parents in childhood during World War II. Methods. The 1803 participants belong to the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study, born 1934–44. Of them, 267 (14.8%) had been evacuated abroad in childhood during WWII and the remaining subjects served as controls. Physical and psychosocial functioning was assessed with the Short Form 36 scale (SF-36) between 2001 and 2004. A test for trends was based on linear regression. All analyses were adjusted for age…
Adherence to the Mediterranean Lifestyle and Desired Body Weight Loss in a Mediterranean Adult Population with Overweight: A PREDIMED-Plus Study
2020
Background. Body weight dissatisfaction is a hindrance to following a healthy lifestyle and it has been associated with weight concerns. Objectives. The aim of this study was to assess the association between the adherence to the Mediterranean lifestyle (diet and exercise) and the desired body weight loss in an adult Mediterranean population with overweight. Methods. Cross-sectional analysis in 6355 participants (3268 men; 3087 women) with metabolic syndrome and BMI (Body mass index) between 27.0 and 40.0 kg/m2 (55–75 years old) from the PREDIMED-Plus trial. Desired weight loss was the percentage of weight that participants wished to lose. It was categorized into four cut-offs of this perce…

2016
BAYRAK, SULE/0000-0001-7023-2358; Tuloglu, Nuray/0000-0001-6410-9126 WOS: 000399208700014 PubMed: 28160586 Background: An eruption cyst (EC) is a benign, developmental cyst associated with a primary or permanent tooth. This paper presents 66 ECs in 53 patients who reported to 3 different centers in Turkey between 2014-2015. Material and Methods: 53 patients (31 male, 22 female) with 66 ECs were diagnosed and treated over a 1-year period. The mean age of patients was 5.4 years (minimum 5 months, maximum 11 years). Clinical examination and periapical radiographs were used to establish diagnosis. Age, gender, site, history of trauma and type of treatment were recorded. Results: Of the 66 ECs d…
Surgical planning after sleep versus awake techniques in patients with obstructive sleep apnea
2013
Objective/Hypothesis This study examined correlations between surgical recommendations based on either drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) or common awake examination methods in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Study Design Prospective, blinded, clinical trial at a university hospital. Methods An otorhinolaryngologist designed surgical plans for patients with OSAS after clinical examination, lateral cephalometry, the Muller maneuver, and Friedman staging. A second otorhinolaryngologist blinded to the previous plans made surgical recommendations after DISE. A third person tested agreement between the two sets of plans using Cohen's kappa statistic and the chi-squared te…
