The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the voluntary neural drive and the excitability of the reflex arc could be modulated by training, even in old age. To this aim, the effects of a 16-wk strengthening program on plantar flexor voluntary activation (VA) and on the maximum Hoffman reflex (Hmax)-to-maximum M wave (Mmax) ratio were investigated in 14 elderly men (65–80 yr). After training, isometric maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) increased by 18% ( P < 0.05) and weight-lifting ability by 24% ( P < 0.001). In the present study, we hypothesized that exhaustive exercise in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) results in glutathione oxidation and lipid peroxidation and that xanthine oxidase (XO) contributes to free radical generation during exercise. COPD patients performed incremental cycle ergometry until exhaustion with (n = 8) or without (n = 8) prior treatment with allopurinol, an XO inhibitor. Physical exercise increased the activities of arylsulphatase, cathepsin D and β-glucuronidase in mouse skeletal muscle but not in cardiac muscle. Exercise-induced lysosomal response was more prominent in young adult than in senescent mice. The lipofuscin content of cardiac and skeletal muscles increased markedly during ageing and was also found to increase slightly after exertion in young mice, but not in senescent ones.

The effects of age and endurance training on muscle fibre characteristics were studied in a slow (m. soleus, MS) and in a fast (m. rectus femoris, MRF) skeletal muscle. Wistar rats at ages of 1, 2, 4, 10, and 24 months were used as experimental animals. The trained rats were put to run on a motor-driven treadmill 5 d/wk beginning from the age of 1 month. The body weights of the animals increased continuously throughout their lives. The muscle weights increased up to the age of 10 months, after which they tended to decrease.
