The Proton Spectrum in Neutron Beta Decay: Latest Results with the aSPECT Spectrometer

Abstract The purpose of the neutron decay spectrometer aSPECT is to determine the antineutrino electron angular correlation coefficient a with high precision. Latest measurements with aSPECT were performed during April/May 2008 at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France. In this paper we give a report on the experiment and the status of the ongoing data analysis.

Anomaly-free leptophilic axionlike particle and its flavor violating tests

Motivated by the recent Xenon1T result, we study a leptophilic flavor-dependent anomaly-free axionlike particle (ALP) and its effects on charged-lepton flavor violation. We present two representative models. The first one considers that the ALP origins from the flavon that generates the charged-lepton masses. The second model assumes a larger flavor symmetry such that more general mixings in the charged-lepton are possible, while maintaining flavor-dependent ALP couplings. We find that a keV ALP explaining the Xenon1T result is still viable for lepton flavor violation and stellar cooling astrophysical limits. Digital rock physics: Effect of fluid viscosity on effective elastic properties

Abstract This paper is concerned with the effect of pore fluid viscosity on effective elastic properties using digitized rocks. We determine a significant velocity dispersion in wave propagation simulations by the variation of the pore fluid viscosity. Several attenuation regimes are considered which may contribute to this observation. Starting point is a virtual rock physics approach. Numerical simulations of effective transport and effective mechanical properties are applied to statistically representative rock samples. The rock microstructure is imaged by 3D X-ray tomography. Experimental Constraint on Axionlike Particles over Seven Orders of Magnitude in Mass

We use our recent electric dipole moment (EDM) measurement data to constrain the possibility that the HfF+ EDM oscillates in time due to interactions with candidate dark matter axionlike particles (ALPs). We employ a Bayesian analysis method which accounts for both the look-elsewhere effect and the uncertainties associated with stochastic density fluctuations in the ALP field. We find no evidence of an oscillating EDM over a range spanning from 27 nHz to 400 mHz, and we use this result to constrain the ALP-gluon coupling over the mass range 10-22-10-15 eV. Impact Energy Flux on Earth in the Last 150 Ma as Inferred from the Cratering Records

We have used a compilation of 30 well-dated large impact craters on Earth (i.e., diameters larger than 5 km) younger than 150 Ma, their diameters, geochronologic ages, and the corresponding uncertainties to construct a graph summarizing our current knowledge on the influx of the impact energy onto the Earth as a function of time. From the crater diameters, we estimated the corresponding impact energies through suitable scaling laws. Then to each crater we associated a gaussian (bell) function of time centered at its age. A Coupled Solid-Fluid Method for Modeling Subduction

International audience; We present a novel dynamic approach for solid/fluid coupling by joining two different numerical methods: Boundary Element Method (BEM) and Finite Element Method (FEM). FEM results describe the thermo-mechanical evolution of the solid while the fluid is solved with the BEM. The bidirectional feedback between the two domains evolves along a Lagrangian interface where the FEM domain is embedded inside the BEM domain. Colloquium: Laboratory experiments on hydromagnetic dynamos

2002

Cosmic magnetic fields, including the fields of planets, stars, and galaxies, are believed to be caused by dynamo action in moving electrically conducting fluids. While the theory and numerics of hydromagnetic dynamos have flourished during recent decades, an experimental validation of the effect was missing until recently. We sketch the long history towards a working laboratory dynamo. We report on the first successful experiments at the sodium facilities in Riga and Karlsruhe, and on other experiments which are carried out or planned at various places in the world.

Open questions about homogeneous fluid dynamos: The VKS experiment

International audience; We consider several problems that arise in the context of homogeneous fluid dynamos such as the effect of turbulence on the dynamo threshold, the saturation level of the generated magnetic field above the threshold and its dynamics. We compare some of our predictions with the recent experimental results of the Karlsruhe and Riga experiments. Finally, we present the VKS experiment that we have designed to answer some of the remaining open questions. We study, in particular, the response of a turbulent flow to an external magnetic field.
