The pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents: A systematic review wi…

2017

Background Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorders in childhood. A wide variety of treatments have been used for the management of ADHD. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of pharmacological, psychological and complementary and alternative medicine interventions for the treatment of ADHD in children and adolescents. Methods and findings We performed a systematic review with network meta-analyses. Randomised controlled trials (≥ 3 weeks follow-up) were identified from published and unpublished sources through searches in PubMed and the Cochrane Library (up to April 7, 2016). Interventions of interest were pharmacolo…

Effects of a low-frequency sound wave therapy programme on functional capacity, blood circulation and bone metabolism in frail old men and women

2009

Objective: To evaluate the effects of a low-frequency sound wave therapy programme on functional capacity, blood circulation and bone metabolism of the frail elderly. Design: Single-blind, randomized, controlled trial. Setting: Two senior service centres. Subjects: Forty-nine volunteers (14 males and 35 females) aged 62—93 years with up to 12 diagnosed diseases were allocated in either the intervention group (n = 30) or control group (n = 19). Intervention: The intervention group underwent sound wave therapy, 3—5 times a week for 30 minutes per session over a period of 6 months. The control group received no intervention. Main measurements: Blood pressure, functional capacity, mobility, bo…

Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) for molecular targeted therapies of tumours.

2009

Scientific progress in genetics, cell and molecular biology has greatly ameliorated our comprehensive understanding of the molecular mechanisms of neoplastic transformation and progression. The rapidly advancing identification of molecular targets in human cancers during the last decade has provided an excellent starting point for the development of novel therapeutics. A huge variety of potential molecular targets have been identified, many of which are already in the market for therapeutic purposes. It is now becoming possible to target pathways and/or molecules that are crucial in maintaining the malignant phenotype. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is often considered as alternative or…

Biopiracy versus One-World Medicine-From colonial relicts to global collaborative concepts.

2017

Abstract Background Practices of biopiracy to use genetic resources and indigenous knowledge by Western companies without benefit-sharing of those, who generated the traditional knowledge, can be understood as form of neocolonialism. Hypothesis The One-World Medicine concept attempts to merge the best of traditional medicine from developing countries and conventional Western medicine for the sake of patients around the globe. Study design Based on literature searches in several databases, a concept paper has been written. Legislative initiatives of the United Nations culminated in the Nagoya protocol aim to protect traditional knowledge and regulate benefit-sharing with indigenous communiti…

The pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents: protocol for a systema…

2015

[Background] Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of children and adolescents, with a significant impact on health services and the community in terms of economic and social burdens. The objective of this systematic review will be to evaluate the comparative efficacy and safety of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments in children and adolescents with ADHD.

Why do Norwegian nurses leave the public health service to practice CAM?

2009

Accepted version of an article published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, 15 (2009), 147-151 This paper explores a number of issues associated with the recent increase in nurses choosing to leave the Norwegian health care system in order to become independent practitioners of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). The paper suggests that in Norway, nurses perceive medical hegemony continues to persist. Nurses perceive restrictions in their ability to develop their professional roles and status. CAM would appear to offer many nurses, the opportunity to develop their clinical skills in an autonomous, egalitarian and more holistic environment.

The use of complementary alternative medicines in advanced cancer patients followed at home

2021

Objectives: To assess the use of complementary alternative medicines (CAM) in advanced cancer patients followed at home. Methods: A consecutive sample of advanced cancer patients admitted to a home palliative care program was invited to participate in the study in a period of two months. Demographic characteristics, religious belief, education level, diagnosis, and socio-economic condition were recorded. Patients were asked about the use of CAM, considered to be a health-related treatment practiced outside the established health services. Information about CAM indications and those who prescribed or suggested CAM were also collected. Results: Two hundred and eighty-three advanced cancer pat…

Ar piekļuvi saistītas komplikācijas hemodialīzes pacientiem

2018

Ievads: ar asinsvadu pieeju saistītas komplikācijas tiek bieži novērotas hemodialīzes (HD) pacientiem, kuriem tās palielina komorbiditātes un nāves riskus. Mērķis: Izpētīt saslimstības un ar piekļuvi saistīto komplikāciju veidus Latvijas HD pacientiem, kā arī iespējamos riska faktorus un to saistību ar komplikācijām, lai veicinātu to novēršanu. Materiāli un metodes: Šis ir retrospektīvs aprakstošs pētījums, kura pamatā ir Paula Stradiņa Klīniskās Universitātes slimnīcas (PSKUS) HD nodaļas pacientu datu apkopojums. Pētījumā tika iekļauti visi hroniskie HD pacienti, kuri laika posmā no 2018. g. 26.februāra līdz 26. martam saņēma regulāru hronisku HD. Šo pacientu dialīzes piekļuves komplikācij…

Approximation of piecewise smooth functions and images by edge-adapted (ENO-EA) nonlinear multiresolution techniques

2008

Abstract This paper introduces and analyzes new approximation procedures for bivariate functions. These procedures are based on an edge-adapted nonlinear reconstruction technique which is an intrinsically two-dimensional extension of the essentially non-oscillatory and subcell resolution techniques introduced in the one-dimensional setting by Harten and Osher. Edge-adapted reconstructions are tailored to piecewise smooth functions with geometrically smooth edge discontinuities, and are therefore attractive for applications such as image compression and shock computations. The local approximation order is investigated both in L p and in the Hausdorff distance between graphs. In particular, i…
