Thermal and hygrometric properties of traditional calcarenite stones in the area of Palermo
2017
The energy improvement of historic buildings requires detailed knowledge of the thermal and hygrometric properties of traditional materials and components. These data should be collected for specific local contexts, where the features of historic constructions are comparable. For the purpose of developing this tool for the architectural heritage of Palermo, this research focuses on calcarenite s…
Diagnosis of papillary muscle rupture after acute myocardial infarction by transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography.
1993
The sensitivity of transthoracic echocardiography to visualize the structural abnormality of papillary muscle rupture (PMR) after acute myocardial infarction can be anticipated to average about 50%; therefore, we evaluated five patients exhibiting the condition with both transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography. The use of the two imaging techniques resulted in the fact that no instance of PMR was missed. Using transthoracic echocardiography in two patients and transesophageal echocardiography in four, the ruptured papillary muscle was visualized directly. Mitral insufficiency as an indirect sign was observed in all patients. In one patient the papillary muscle rupture developed i…
Performance of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound in Thyroid Nodules: Review of Current State and Future Perspectives
2021
Simple Summary Ultrasound has been used as baseline imaging for thyroid nodules for decades; nevertheless, no single feature is sensitive or specific enough to exclude or confirm thyroid malignancy. Therefore, clinical practice and research still focus on less invasive diagnostic patterns to reduce unnecessary fine-needle aspiration biopsies or surgery. The main advantage of CEUS is the ability to assess the sequence and intensity of vascular perfusion and hemodynamics in the thyroid nodule, thus providing real-time characterization of nodule features, and considered a valuable new approach in the determination of benign vs. malignant nodules. In addition, contrast agents used in CEUS can h…
Caspase-3 contributes to ZO-1 and Cl-5 tight-junction disruption in rapid anoxic neurovascular unit damage.
2011
BACKGROUND: Tight-junction (TJ) protein degradation is a decisive step in hypoxic blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown in stroke. In this study we elucidated the impact of acute cerebral ischemia on TJ protein arrangement and the role of the apoptotic effector protease caspase-3 in this context. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We used an in vitro model of the neurovascular unit and the guinea pig whole brain preparation to analyze with immunohistochemical methods the BBB properties and neurovascular integrity. In both methodological approaches we observed rapid TJ protein disruptions after 30 min of oxygen and glucose deprivation or middle cerebral artery occlusion, which were accompanied by…
Interactions of silica nanoparticles with lung epithelial cells and the association to flotillins
2012
Amorphous silica nanoparticles (aSNPs) gain increasing popularity for industrial and therapeutic claims. The lung with its surface area of 100-140 m(2) displays an ideal target for therapeutic approaches, but it represents also a serious area of attack for harmful nanomaterials. The exact nature of the cytotoxic effects of NPs is still unknown. Furthermore, cellular pathways and the destiny of internalized NPs are still poorly understood. Therefore, we examined the cytotoxicity (MTS, LDH) and inflammatory responses (IL-8) for different-sized aSNPs (30, 70, 300 nm) on our lung epithelial cells line NCI H441 and endothelial cell line ISO-HAS-1. Additionally, colocalization studies have been c…
Extranodal extension in N1-adenocarcinoma of the pancreas and papilla of Vater: A systematic review and meta-analysis of its prognostic significance
2016
The aim of the study was to investigate the prognostic role of extranodal extension (ENE) of lymph node metastasis in adenocarcinoma of the pancreas (PDAC) and papilla [cancer of the papilla of Vater (CPV)]. A PubMed and SCOPUS search from database inception until 5 January 2015 without language restrictions was conducted. Eligible were prospective studies reporting data on prognostic parameters in individuals with PDAC and/or CPV, comparing participants with the presence of ENE (ENE +) with those with intranodal extension (ENE). Data were summarized using risk ratios for number of deaths/recurrences and hazard ratios for time-dependent risk related to ENE+, adjusted for potential confounde…

Chromatography with dense gases
1992
A capillary restrictor for supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) with CO2 was made by using a micro torch and fine emery cloths or grinding blocks. This restrictor could be drawn out either directly from the end of the analytical capillary column, or from a short piece of any capillary, which was then connected to the analytical column by standard techniques. It was found that the base current of a flame ionisation detector (FID) depends strongly on the position of the capillary end with respect to the FID flame tip and on the CO2 grade, of course. Best results have been achieved at around 5 to 7 mm distance between the restrictor and the flame tip ends, and using SFC grade CO2.

The Transcription Factors TBX2 and TBX3 Interact with Human Papillomavirus 16 (HPV16) L2 and Repress the Long Control Region of HPVs
2013
ABSTRACT The minor capsid protein L2 of human papillomaviruses (HPVs) has multiple functions during the viral life cycle. Although L2 is required for effective invasion and morphogenesis, only a few cellular interaction partners are known so far. Using yeast two-hybrid screening, we identified the transcription factor TBX2 as a novel interaction partner of HPV type 16 (HPV16) L2. Coimmunoprecipitations and immunofluorescence analyses confirmed the L2-TBX2 interaction and revealed that L2 also interacts with TBX3, another member of the T-box family. Transcription of the early genes during HPV infection is under the control of an upstream enhancer and early promoter region, the long control r…
