Clinical evaluation of automated capillary refill time estimation in dogs and cats

2019

In this study, we clinically evaluated a pulse oximeter-based device for automated capillary refill time (CRT) estimation in dogs and cats. CRT can reveal conditions like shock or anemia in dogs and cats. However, visual CRT estimation has low repeatability, and the available optical systems for automated estimation are not suitable for pets. We evaluated a custom-made portable CRT measuring device on various measurement sites of 12 dogs and 11 cats with parallel visual CRT estimation on the gum by treating veterinarian. The capillary refill was also recorded by a video camera for reference. The visual and video procedures were moderately correlated with the coefficient of 0.61; visual CRT …

Character Strengths: Measurement and Studies in Argentina with Military and General Population Samples

2014

The publication of the book so-called “Manual of the Sanities” (Peterson and Seligman, Character strengths and virtues: a handbook and classification, vol. xiv. Oxford University Press, New York, 2004) has inspired the scientific study of individuals’ positive traits with different populations from different countries. Studies conducted in Argentina (general and military population) in relation to the pillar of positive traits are shown. An inventory of complex bipolar items was developed to measure character strengths. This self-report inventory – that covers a broad range of strengths of character with few items – has demonstrated acceptable levels of reliability and validity. Relationshi…

The role of local adaptation in the relationship between an endangered root hemiparasite Euphrasia rostkoviana, and its host, Agrostis capillaris

1999

We experimentally studied the role of local adaptation and the co-evolutionary relationship between an annual, endangered root hemiparasite Euphrasia rostkoviana and its main host Agrostis capillaris. According to our hypothesis, the existence of local adaptation in hemiparasites should be observable in better hemiparasite performance when attached to A. capillaris hosts originating from Euphrasia populations. After one month of growth, the height and the number of leaves of hemiparasites were not affected by the origin of their hosts. The differences in growth were due to between population effects. The situation remained constant after three months. Hemiparasite biomass was not affected b…

A study of physical processes in microplasma capillary discharges

2011

We continue the research of low-pressure capillary discharge lamps of 500 μ m in radius in Ar/Hg, Kr/Hg and Xe/Hg mixtures. In the previous paper, an experimental approach which combines the optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and tomographic methods was developed to study the capillary discharge. The present work is focused on interpretation of the tomographic reconstruction results for understanding the physical processes occurring in a capillary plasma. Analyzing the results of reconstruction, it was concluded that the radial profiles of Ar, Kr and Xe emission coefficients are in a good agreement with the Schottky theory. According to the Schottky model, ionization processes in plasma a…

Disparités géographiques et convergence des régions européennes : une approche par l'économétrie spatiale

2002

The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the convergence process between European regions by taking into account spatial patterns of economic activities. First, with the help of literature reviews on theoretical and empirical analyses of growth and convergence and on economic geography models, we show in chapter 1 why geographic disparities should be introduced in the study of convergence between economies. Next, the spatial statistic and econometric tools allowing to reach this goal are detailed in chapter 2. Finally, three empirical studies of the convergence process in presence of geographic disparities are carried out. They are based on a sample for per capita GDP of 138 regions, belo…

Master's thesis Sports Science ME517 - University of Agder 2018 The background for the present study is an interest in what makes the best athletes the best. Many intermediate athletes exercise as much as the best athletes in the world, so what determines which athlete achieve the best results? The purpose of the present study was to analyze different characteristics of a biathlete at a high international level, and to investigate the factors related to the early life and relationships that contributes to the athlete's performance development. The research question for the present study is; "what characterizes early life, significant others and psychological characteristics of a biathlete w…

Targeting the vascular endothelial growth factor system to prevent ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome

2008

BACKGROUND: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) typically occurs when ovaries are primed with FSH/ LH and subsequently exposed to hCG. The ultimate pathophysiological step underlying this clinical picture is increased vascular permeability (VP). METHODS: A search of the literature was carried out using PubMed and the authors’ files. RESULTS: In rodents and humans, the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and VEGF receptor 2 (VEGFR-2) mRNA increases during ovarian stimulation. With the administration of hCG, the expression of each rises to a maximum. Expression of VEGF/VEGFR-2 mRNAs correlates with enhanced VP, with both peaking 48 h following an injection of hCG. Imm…

Tiroiditis de Hashimoto: Microcirculación Lingual y Labial en Pacientes Afectados por Macroglosia

2007

The aim of this study is to estudy lingual and labial microcirculation differences among healthy subjects and those with Hashimoto's thyroiditis affected by macroglossia. Twenty healthy patients and 20 patients suffering from Hashimoto's thyroiditis were examined. Labial and lingual capiUaroscopy were used to investigate the characteristics of microcirculation. For each patient we evaluated visibility, course, tortuosity and the possible presence of microhaemorrhages, average calibre of capillary loops and the number of visible capillary loops per square millimetre. The investigations of the labial and lingual mucous were simple, non invasive and repeatable for each patient. In Hashimoto's …

A geomorphological approach for enhancing environmental management and conservation of landforms as protected nature objects in the Upper Daugava spi…

2015

This paper describes the application of geomorphological approach for environmental management and conservation of landforms. Specifically, we discuss the contribution of geomorphological field survey and adapted matrix methodology (in combination with understanding of geology) to identification, study and evaluation of those abiotic nature elements which represent geological and geomorphological heritage. We describe a case study carried out in that part of the protected landscape area “Augšdaugava” which encompasses the Upper Daugava spillway valley. The study programme reported in this paper was realized to perform inventory of…

Inkluusio - erityisoppilaan uusi mahdollisuus ja haaste koululle : historiallis-hermeneuttinen analyysi erityisoppilaan (vammaisen ja poikkeavan) kou…

2010

Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan erilaisuuden/moninaisuuden suhdetta useista viitekehyksistä.
