Note: Critical Factors in Opening Pharmaceutical Packages: a Usability Study among Healthcare Workers, Women with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Elderly Wo…
2016
This cross-sectional study compared the usability of pharmaceutical packages to determine the critical factors involved in packages with different opening mechanisms. Four packaging types (a bottle with a screw cap, a box with a pill plate, disposable plastic droppers with a container and a jar with a hinge cap) were evaluated by 45 women (nurses, older women and women with rheumatoid arthritis). Usability was evaluated for subjective measures related to the ease of opening and for objective measures related to the time needed to open the packaging, electrical muscular activity (electromyography, EMG) and ranges of motion of the upper extremities. Of the arthritic women, 13% were unable to …
Connected pathway relative permeability from pore-scale imaging of imbibition
2016
Abstract Pore-scale images obtained from a synchrotron-based X-ray computed micro-tomography (µCT) imbibition experiment in sandstone rock were used to conduct Navier–Stokes flow simulations on the connected pathways of water and oil phases. The resulting relative permeability was compared with steady-state Darcy-scale imbibition experiments on 5 cm large twin samples from the same outcrop sandstone material. While the relative permeability curves display a large degree of similarity, the endpoint saturations for the µCT data are 10% in saturation units higher than the experimental data. However, the two datasets match well when normalizing to the mobile saturation range. The agreement is p…
Intermittent Horner's syndrome on alternate sides: a hint for locating spinal lesions.
1980
A patient with a cervical intramedullary ependymoma is described who exhibited a Horner's syndrome on alternate sides. Pharmacological study demonstrated damage to the pre-ganglionic sympathetic neurons. Disregarding cases with the Shy-Drager syndrome, three comparable case reports have been found in the literature where the fluctuating expression of Horner's syndrome, alternating from one side to the other, was attributable to a lesion of the cervical spinal cord. In contrast to the present patient, the pharmacological responses of these patients indicated a lesion of the central sympathetic pathway.
An easy-to-use model for O2 supply to red muscle. Validity of assumptions, sensitivity to errors in data
1995
An easy-to-use capillary cylinder model of O2 supply to muscle is presented that considers all those factors that are known to be most important for realistic results: (1) red blood cell (RBC) O2 unloading along the capillary, (2) effects of the particulate nature of blood, (3) free and hemoglobin-facilitated O2 diffusion and reaction kinetics inside RBCs, (4) free and myoglobin-facilitated O2 diffusion inside the muscle cell, and (5) carrier-free region separating RBC and tissue. In a first approach, a highly simplified yet reasonably accurate treatment of the complex three-dimensional oxygen diffusion field in and next to capillaries is employed. As an alternative, a more realistic descri…

Volatility transmission patterns and terrorist attacks
2009
The objective of this study is to analyze volatility transmission between the US and Eurozone stock markets considering the effects of the September 11, March 11 and July 7 financial crises. In order to do this, we use a multivariate GARCH model and take into account the asymmetric volatility phenomenon, the non-synchronous trading problem and the crises themselves. Moreover, a graphical analysis of the Asymmetric Volatility Impulse-Response Functions (AVIRF) is introduced, which takes into consideration the crisis effect. Results suggest that there is bidirectional and asymmetric volatility transmission and show the different impact that terrorist attacks had on both markets. El objetivo d…
Does FDI in China Displace Foreign Jobs in Asia?
2014
This paper studies the China effect from a novel perspective. We focus on the effect of FDI in China on foreign employment flows in the rest of Asia. The concentration of FDI in China may divert employment from similar surrounding countries. Offsetting this negative effect, MNE activities might spillover to neighboring countries along the foreign production chain. Therefore, the effect of global FDI champions is uncertain. Most studies on this issue focus on trade and FDI inflows. The China effect on other aspects of international production, like employment, remains largely unknown. The contributions of this paper are twofold. First, we enhance the estimation of the China effect with recen…
Micellar electrokinetic chromatography of polyamines and monoacetylpolyamines
2001
A selective procedure for qualitative and quantitative analysis of ten polyamines by micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) was developed. Benzoylated polyamines and acetylpolyamines in micellar phase of SDS (10 mM) were separated at 25 degrees C by 20 mM borate buffer pH 8.5, containing 8% ethanol, with an applied voltage of 25 kV (5 microA) and then detected at 198 nm. The experimental factors and operational parameters were optimized by performing analysis at different surfactant concentrations, pH, voltage and temperature with and without ethanol. The repeatibility of migration times and peak heights is a peculiarity of the method here described.
Preliminary Results on the Helminthofauna of the Eurasian Lynx (Lynx Lynx) in Latvia
2003
In the article, preliminary data on the helminthofauna of the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in Latvia are presented. Material for the research on the helminthofauna was collected and investigated from 1999 to 2002. A total of 42 individuals was examined for helminths. Helminth species occurring most frequently in the Eurasian lynx and helminths dangerous to people were established. Six helminth species belonging to the following taxonomic groups were found: one species (Taenia pisiformis) of Cestoda and five species (Toxocara mystax, Thominx aerophilus, Trichinella sp., Capillaria felis-cati, and Nematoda sp.) of Nematoda.
Social exclusion and poverty in the European Union
2016
Social policy has always been a fundamental pillar of the European Union. Social exclusion and poverty are two problems interrelated whose effects are intended to be reduced by the Euro…
