Role of meprins to protect ileal mucosa of Crohn's disease patients from colonization by adherent-invasive E. coli

Ileal lesions in Crohn's disease (CD) patients are colonized by pathogenic adherent-invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC) able to adhere to and invade intestinal epithelial cells (IEC), and to survive within macrophages. The interaction of AIEC with IEC depends on bacterial factors mainly type 1 pili, flagella, and outer membrane proteins. In humans, proteases can act as host defence mechanisms to counteract bacterial colonization. The protease meprin, composed of multimeric complexes of the two subunits alpha and beta, is abundantly expressed in IECs. Major and trace elements in Boletus aereus and Clitopilus prunulus growing on volcanic and sedimentary soils of Sicily (Italy)

The aim of this study was to determine and compare the content of 28 elements (Ag, Al, As, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, Se, Sr, Tl, U, V and Zn) in fruiting bodies of Boletus aereus Bull. and Clitopilus prunulus P. Kumm collected from eleven unpolluted sites of Sicily (Italy) and, also to relate the abundance of chemical elements in soil with their concentration in mushrooms. Comparison of the antibacterial effect of uroepithelial cells from healthy donors and children with asymptomatic bacteriuria

Bacterial attachment to uroepithelial cells (UEC) and the effect of UEC on bacterial growth was investigated in 15 healthy persons and 12 patients suffering from asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) with recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI). Desquamated UEC and mannose-resistant Escherichia coli were co-cultivated for up to 90 min. While no difference in bacterial adherence was observed between healthy controls and patients, 33.4% of the bacteria attached to normal UEC were found to be dead under microscopic evaluation (acridine orange staining), whereas no killing effect could be observed in patients' UEC 5 min after the onset of incubation. Recent reports describe the ability of select bacterial strains to bind human norovirus, although the specificity of such interactions is unknown. Rapid and specific detection of F17-related pilin and adhesin genes in diarrheic and septicemic Escherichia coli strains by multiplex PCR

The F17-related adhesins are prevalent in Escherichia coli strains isolated from calves with diarrhea or septicemia and from lambs with nephropathy. The F17 family includes the F17a, F17b, F17c, and F111 fimbriae produced by bovine E. coli strains and the G agglutinin produced by human uropathogenic E. coli strains. An easy and inexpensive multiplex PCR method was developed to detect all the F17-related fimbriae and to identify four subtypes of structural subunit genes and two distinct subfamilies of adhesin genes by only two runs of amplification. Characterization of R-plasmids in environmental isolates ofsalmonella: Host range and stability

Four environmental isolates ofSalmonella, resistant to several drugs, were examined for plasmid carriage with four different plasmid DNA isolation procedures. The method of Birnboim and Doly gave the best results. Three of the strains possessed a single plasmid with molecular weights of 60 (kanamycin resistant), 44.5 (kanamcin resistant), and 23.4 Md (ampicillin and amoxicillin resistant); the other strain (resistant to tetracycline) harbored two plasmids of 69.8 and 2.2 Md. Crystal Structure of the Maturation Protein from Bacteriophage Qβ

Abstract Virions of the single-stranded RNA bacteriophages contain a single copy of the maturation protein, which is bound to the phage genome and is required for the infectivity of the particles. The maturation protein mediates the adsorption of the virion to bacterial pili and the subsequent release and penetration of the genome into the host cell. International audience; Studies were carried out on some biological and behavioral aspects of Cirrospilus diallus Walker and Cirrospilus pictus (Nees) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) in relation to their host, the citrus leafminer (CLM), Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae). Adults of both species fed with sugar lived on average 4.45 +/- 0.19 days, whereas adults provided with honey survived on average 40.62 +/- 1.97 days.
