Amino Acid Esters as Chiral Auxiliaries in Barbier-Type Reactions in Aqueous Solution Valine and proline benzyl ester are converted into the aliphatic and aromatic α-oxo amides 5 by activation of the respective α-oxo acid by means of N,N′-diisopropylcarbodiimide. The α-oxo amides 5 undergo Barbier-type reactions with differently substituted allyl halides in the presence of zinc and pyridinium toluenesulfonate in water/THF (2:1, v/v) at 4°C. Thereby, the α-hydroxy amides 8/9 are formed in high yields and, in the case of the proline ester amides, with diastereomer ratios of 4–6:1. Abstract The electrocarboxylation of halogenated acetophenones and benzophenones to the corresponding hydroxycarboxylic acids has been carried out in undivided cell equipped with aluminium sacrificial anode and using 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) as the solvent. The radical anion generated by the electro-reduction of the aromatic ketone is involved in several competitive reactions which lead to the formation of the target hydroxycarboxylic acid, the corresponding alcohol and pinacol and the de-halogenated parent ketone. Es werden die Faktoren ermittelt, welche die Stereochemie und das Mengenverhaltnis (C/P) des bei der Reduktion von Acetophenon mit Lithium-, Natrium- und Kaliumamalgam (Li/Hg, Na/Hg, K/Hg) gebildeten Carbinols (C) und Pinakols (P) bestimmen. Das C/P-Verhaltnis wird beeinflust a) durch Protonendonatoren, b) durch quartaren Ammoniumsalze, c) durch bis-tertiare Amine. Abstract The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of operational parameters on the competition between the formation of the target 2-hydroxy-2-arylpropanoic acid and ring carboxylation in the electrocarboxylation of aromatic ketones. For the investigated ketones, this competition has been found to be dramatically influenced by different parameters such as the water content and the ratio between the carbon dioxide and the ketone concentrations (q = [CO2]/[ketone]). Die Elektroreduktion von 1,4-Benzoldicarbonitril in Gegenwart von Essigsaure fuhrt bei einem Stromdurchgang von 4.5 Faraday-aquivalenten/mol in 80proz. Ausbeute zu 4-Amino-methylbenzonitril (1). Bei Anwendung von 6 Faraday-aquivalenten/mol konnen geringe Mengen an 4-Methylbenzonitril (2) nachgewiesen werden. A single crystal of the rel-R,R-enantiomer of the title compound, C16H14O2, was analyzed. The molecular structure is characterized by nearly planar cyclobutene rings and a torsion angle of the diol unit of 68.3 (2)°. Strands parallel to the b axis are built from diols connected via hydrogen bonds.
