The red palm weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier (Coleoptera, Curculionidae), is one of the most severe pests of ornamental palm species in urban areas of Mediterranean countries. Theoretical study of the OH addition to the β-pinene

The initial step of the mechanism of the OH + β-pinene gas-phase reaction was investigated by means of ab initio calculations. Four different possibilities for the OH addition to the double bond are discussed, corresponding to the addition on each C atom of the double bond, and for each one, either the syn or anti OH attack to the two methyl groups on the (bi)cyclic molecule. Energy barriers calculated at the QCISD(T)/6-31G(d) level of theory on UMP2/6-31G(d) optimised structures, show that there are preferred orientations for the OH addition under atmospheric conditions of temperature and pressure.

Four derivatives of 2, 6, 6-trimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]hept-2-ene (α-pinene) and four derivatives of 2-methylene-6, 6-dimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]heptane (β-pinene) were synthesized and their 1H, 13C and 17O NMR spectra were measured, analysed and assigned. The 1H NMR spectral parameters were obtained by computer-aided analyses of the very complex multi-spin, second-order spectra. Some of the 13C NMR chemical shift assignments of these compounds reported in the literature should be changed, based on these accurate 1H NMR spectral analyses and carbon-proton chemical shift correlated spectra (COSY). In this study the agromomical and chemical characterization of 13 sicilian biotypes of Thymbra capitata (L.) Cav. (or Thymus capitatus Hoff. et Link.) collected from different areas of Sicily (Italy) and grown under the same agricultural and environmental condition are reported. Thirty-one samples of Coriandrum sativum L. fruits, of different origin, year of cultivation (harvest) and crop management systems were subjected to volatile component analysis by combining Head Space Solid Phase Microextraction (HS-SPME) with GC/MS.
