Chronological records of metal deposition in sediments from the Strait of Sicily, central Mediterranean: assessing natural fluxes and anthropogenic a…
2010
Abstract Sediment box-cores were recovered from the Strait of Sicily along two onshore–offshore transects in water depths of 29–500 m. Samples were dated by 210 Pb and analysed for major and trace elements. Inspections of chronological profiles integrated with application of statistical algorithms to the geochemical dataset and supported by in situ hydrological observations were used to assess factors driving element distributions. Mineralogical and chemical variability of sediments offshore of the southwestern Sicily coast reflect the irregular sea floor morphology of the Adventure Bank. Anthropogenic inputs explain enrichments with respect to background values for Sb, As, Pb, and Hg, that…
Wave energy assessment in Sicily (Italy)
2015
Abstract This research presents an estimation of wave energy potential in Sicily (Italy) carried out using both buoy wave measurements from Rete Ondametrica Nazionale (RON), the Italian Government wave buoy network, and wave parameter data by ERA-INTERIM, a recent meteorological reanalysis project of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Starting from these offshore data, we first identified the western part of Sicily as the area with a higher availability of offshore wave energy; subsequently, we selected a study area in the western part of the south coast and assessed the nearshore potential energy by performing propagation using a spectral model (SWAN). The near…
Embedding Monitoring Systems for Cured-In-Place Pipes
2017
This paper proposes a non-intrusive electrical measurement system for monitoring some relevant parameters in pipeline systems. Temperature and flow-rate are monitored, using MEMS sensors. The flow-rate is evaluated by measuring pipe vibration, with a 3 axis accelerometer, induced by turbulence when fluid flows within the tube. The sensors are embedded, during the curing process of the cured-in-place pipes, in the pipes wall making the system suitable to be installed in renewed or new pipeline. The first experimental results show that it may be possible to obtain, at low-cost, a fully monitored distribution network.
Modeling and simulation of an offshore crane
2018
This paper presents a mathematical modeling of a crane system using robot modeling theory as well as the numerical simulation of the dynamics of a crane and a marine craft. The simulations are performed in SimulationX and Matlab Simulink. The simulation platform includes a SimulationX-model of the crane, a realistic model of a marine craft using the Marine Systems Simulator(MSS) and the hydrodynamic sea-keeping calculations (VERES program code). The simulation results show a very good picture of the dynamic behavior of the real crane in offshore environment and verify the validation and effectiveness of the presented modeling approach.
Real-time 6-DOF Vessel-to-Vessel Motion Compensation using laser tracker
2017
The industry state-of-the-art offshore motion compensation is today carried out by offshore cranes equipped with Active Heave Compensation (AHC) systems, meaning that a hanging load is positioned at a certain height above the seafloor, even though the floating vessel carrying both the crane and the load is moving due to wave disturbances. Lately, there has been an increased interest among the industry also to compensate for the movement of a secondary vessel, which indicates that a more detailed investigation of the Vessel-to-Vessel Motion Compensation (VVMC) problem is required. The primary motivation for such compensation technique is influenced by the demand for load transfer between shi…
ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF AQUACULTURE INVESTMENTS UNDER CONDITIONS OF RISK AND UNCERTAINTY IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA
2014
This study aims to analyze, from a technical and ec onomic point of view, the choice between alternative investments in aquaculture under condit ions of risk and uncertainty. In particular, a comparative analysis has been conducted between an inshore and an offshore farm producing European sea bass in the Mediterranean Sea. The app lied model refers to the theory of subjective probability, assigning a different probability to e xpected incomes during the investment period. Resul ts show an economic convenience of inshore with respect to offshore farming.
Stochastic response of offshore structures by a new approach to statistical cubicization
2001
This study presents a new statistical cubicization approach for predicting the stochastic response of offshore platforms subjected to a Morison-type nonlinear drag loading. Statistics of the original system are obtained from an equivalent nonlinear system, which is constructed by replacing the Morison drag force by a cubic polynomial function of the relative fluid-structure velocity, up to cubic order. A Volterra series expansion with a finite Fourier series representation is used to approximate the response of the equivalent system. Exact solutions are developed to express the Fourier coefficients of the second and third-order response as functions of the Fourier coefficients of the first-…
Data-independent acquisition strategies for quantitative proteomics
2013
In shotgun proteomics, data-dependent precursor acquisition (DDA) is widely used to profile protein components in complex samples. Although very popular, there are some inherent limitations to the DDA approach, such as irreproducible precursor ion selection, under-sampling and long instrument cycle times. Unbiased ‘data-independent acquisition’ (DIA) strategies try to overcome those limitations. In MSE, which is supported by Waters Q-TOF instrument platforms, such as the Synapt G2-S, a wide band pass filter is used for precursor selection. During acquisition, alternating MS scans are collected at low and high collision energy (CE), providing precursor and fragment ion information, respectiv…
Optimal maintenance system for offshore wind turbines
2010
In the last years, the industry of wind power generators has developed in many aspects. The offshore plants have some benefits over the onshore ones but their implementation is really expensive.Based in that cost, this paper describes the importance of applying an optimal maintenance based in priorities and cost. It also studies the maintenance types and proposes a scheme of maintenance for offshore plants.
Effect of a Passive Tuned Mass Damper on Offshore Installation of a Wind Turbine Nacelle
2021
Abstract Although the installation of offshore wind turbines takes place in calm seas, successful mating of wind turbine components can be challenging due to the relative motions between the two mating parts. This work investigates the effect of a passive tuned mass damper on the mating processes of a nacelle for a 10-megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine. A nacelle with lifting wires and a monopile with a mass damper are respectively modelled using the multibody formulation in the HAWC2 program. A single mass damper is tuned to target at the first natural period of the monopile and is coupled to the main program using a dynamic link library. Afterwards, numerical simulations were carried out…
