Formation and distortion of iodidoantimonates(III): the first isolated [SbI6]3- octahedron

2017

The ability to intentionally construct, through different types of interactions, inorganic–organic hybrid materials with desired properties is the main goal of inorganic crystal engineering. The primary deformation, related to intrinsic interactions within inorganic substructure, and the secondary deformation, mainly caused by the hydrogen bond interactions, are both responsible for polyhedral distortions of halogenidoantimonates(III) with organic cations. The evolution of structural parameters, in particular the Sb—I secondary- and O/N/C—H...I hydrogen bonds, as a function of temperature assists in understanding the contribution of those two distortion factors to the irregularity of [SbI6]…

Protective Effects of L- and D-Carnosine on R-Crystallin Amyloid Fibril Formation: Implications for Cataract Disease

2009

Mildly denaturing conditions induce bovine ?-crystallin, the major structural lens protein, to self-assemble into fibrillar structures in vitro. The natural dipeptide L-carnosine has been shown to have potential protective and therapeutic significance in many diseases. Carnosine derivatives have been proposed as potent agents for ophthalmic therapies of senile cataracts and diabetic ocular complications. Here we report the inhibitory effect induced by the peptide (L- and D-enantiomeric form) on ?-crystallin fibrillation and the almost complete restoration of the chaperone activity lost after denaturant and/or heat stress. Scanning force microscopy (SFM), thioflavin T, and a turbidimetry ass…

Effect of the protein kinase inhibitors, 1-(5-isoquinolinylsulfonyl)-2-methylpiperazine H-7 and N-(2-[methylamino]ethyl)-5-isoquinoline-sulfonamide H…

1998

The effects of 1-(5-isoquinolinylsulfonyl)-2-methylpiperazine H-7 (a cAMP-dependent protein kinase and protein kinase C inhibitor), n-(2-[methylamino]ethyl)-5-isoquinoline-sulfonamide H-8 (a cAMP- and cGMP-dependent protein kinase inhibitor) and indomethacin (IND, a cyclooxygenase inhibitor) on both the spontaneous metastatic ability of 3LL (Lewis lung carcinoma) tumor cells and anti-tumor host response were studied. The study of tumor progression showed that H-7 and H-8 (2 mg kg(-1) day(-1) , i.p., for 8 days) significantly reduced the mean number of metastases (0.8 +/- 0.2 and 1.0 +/- 0.7, respectively, P0.05) with respect to the number of lung metastases (4.2 +/- 2.1) observed in the con…

Poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation accelerates DNA repair in a pathway dependent on Cockayne syndrome B protein

2003

Activation of poly(ADP-ribose)polymerases 1 and 2 (PARP-1 and PARP-2) is one of the earliest responses of mammalian cells to DNA damage by numerous genotoxic agents. We have analysed the influence of PARP inhibition, either achieved by over-expression of the DNA binding domain of PARP-1 or by treatment with 3,4-dihydro-5-[4-(1-piperidinyl)butoxyl]-1(2H)-isoquinolinone, on the repair of single-strand breaks (SSB), pyrimidine dimers and oxidative base modifications sensitive to Fpg protein (mostly 8-hydroxyguanine) in mammalian cells at very low, non-cytotoxic levels of DNA damage. The data show that the repair rates of all three types of DNA damage are significantly lower in PARP-inhibited c…

A hemocyanin from the Onychophora and the emergence of respiratory proteins

2002

The velvet worms (Onychophora) are considered living fossils and are closely related to the Euarthropoda. Onychophora possess a tracheal system for respiratory function, but oxygen-transport proteins have been considered unnecessary. Here, we show that the hemolymph of the Epiperipatus sp. (Onychophora: Peripatidae) contains an arthropod-type hemocyanin, demonstrating that such protein exists outside the Euarthropoda. Thus, the evolution of oxygen carriers preceded the divergence of the Onychophora and Euarthropoda and was most likely linked to the evolution of an efficient circulatory system in a low-oxygen environment. The cDNA of the Epiperipatus hemocyanin subunit comprises 2,287 bp an…

Chemical analysis and antioxidant activity of the essential oils of three Piperaceae species growing in the central region of Cuba.

2013

The present study describes the phytochemical profile and antioxidant activity of the essential oils of three Piperaceae species collected in the central region of Cuba. The essential oils of Piper aduncum, P. auritum and P. umbellatum leaves, obtained by hydrodistillation, were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The main components of P. aduncum oil were piperitone (34%), camphor (17.1%), camphene (10.9%), 1,8-cineol (8.7%) and viridiflorol (7.4%), whereas that of P. auritum and P. umbellatum was safrole (71.8 and 26.4%, respectively). The antioxidant properties of the essential oils were also evaluated using several assays for radical scavenging ability (DPPH test and redu…

Ruthenium Metallodendrimers Based on Nitrile‐Functionalized Poly(alkylidene imine)s

2005

The preparation of the first- and second-generation of nitrile-functionalized poly(alkylidene imine) dendrimers with the organometallic ruthenium complex [Ru(η5-C5H5)(PPh3)2Cl] peripherally attached is described. The reaction of N,N′-bis(cyanomethyl)piperazine (1), N,N′-bis[N′′,N′′′-bis(cyanoethyl)aminoethyl]piperazine (2), or N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis(cyanoethyl)ethylenediamine (3) with [Ru(η5-C5H5)(PPh3)2Cl] (4) in the presence of TlPF6 gives the new air-stable ruthenium metallodendrimers 5, 6, and 7, respectively. These stable metallodendrimers are easily prepared and represent a novel quantitative method to solidify and chromatographically purify the otherwise semi-liquid nitrile-functionalize…

Efficient Nucleophilic Degradation of an Organophosphorus Pesticide “Diazinon” Mediated by Green Solvents and Microwave Heating

2019

An efficient strategy for the degradation of organophosphate pesticide Diazinon was investigated. In this work, ionic liquids, bio-based solvents, and two conventional organic solvents were used as reaction media. Kinetics studies by means of half-life (t1/2,h) were followed by 31P NMR and the products analyzed by GC-MS, HPLC-MS and NMR techniques. These results have shown that t1/2 values in ionic liquids were the lowest and also they were able to activate two electrophilic centers in Diazinon, whilst degradation in bio-based solvents occurred slowly by only an aromatic pathway. In addition, a study to estimate the influence of green activation techniques was carried out by using Ultrasoun…

Stereoselective Synthesis of Chiral Piperidine Derivatives Employing Arabinopyranosylamine as the Carbohydrate Auxiliary.

2006

Stereoselective synthesis of 2-substituted dehydropiperidinones and their further transformation to variously disubstituted piperidine derivatives was achieved employing D-arabinopyranosylamine as the stereodifferentiating carbohydrate auxiliary. A domino Mannich–Michael reaction of 1-methoxy-3-(trimethylsiloxy)butadiene (Danishefsky's diene) with O-pivaloylated arbinosylaldimines furnished N-arabinosyl dehydropiperidinones in high diastereoselectivity. Subsequent conjugate cuprate addition gave 2,6-cis-substituted piperidinones, while enolate alkylation furnished 2,3-trans-substituted dehydropiperidinones. Electrophilic substitution at the enamine structure afforded 5-nitro- and 5-halogen…

Addition of Secondary Amines to α,β-Unsaturated Carbonyl Compounds and Nitriles by Using Microstructured Reactors

2006

Several additions of amines to a,ß-unsaturated carbonyl compounds (Michael additions) were performed in a continuous-flow microstructured reactor rig and compared to the respective batch reaction. Dimethylamine/diethylamine/piperidine and acrylic acid ethyl ester/acrylonitrile were employed as two sets of reactants, giving six reactions. Some of these reactions are highly exothermal. Using the traditional batch procedure the olefin must be added quite slowly to the diluted amine to ensure temperature control and safe operation; especially this is necessary for the addition of dimethylamine (40 mass % aqueous solution) to acrylonitrile. Good yields (>85%) are achieved in this way; however…
