Students' abilities to evaluate the credibility of online texts: The role of internet‐specific epistemic justifications
2021
Previous evaluation studies have rarely used authentic online texts and investigated upper secondary school students' use of evaluation criteria and deep reasoning. The associations between internet-specific epistemic justifications for knowing and credibility evaluation of online texts are not yet fully understood among adolescents. This study investigated upper secondary school students' (N = 372) abilities to evaluate self-selected authentic online texts and the role of internet-specific epistemic justifications in students' evaluation performance when solving a health-related information problem. Students selected three texts with Google Custom Search Engine and evaluated their credibil…
Thinking the Political with Jean-Luc Nancy
2021
In this article, I argue that at the center of Jean-Luc Nancy’s approach to the political lies the thinking of subject as that of relation. Throughout the historical actualizations of, for example, the individual, the state, or the people as a subject, the problematic of relation is one that has retreated and now demands to be subjected to a retreatment. When the arche-teleological presuppositions that constitute subject as that which is given enter the phase of deconstruction, subject comes to present itself as nothing but the activity of relating itself to itself. I respond to Nancy’s call to invent “an affirmation of relation” by way of rethinking the logics of sovereignty and democracy.…
Esiselvitys kauppatieteiden maisteriohjelman käynnistämiseksi Kokkolassa
2014
[Saatteeksi] Vuodesta 2003 lähtien on Vaasan yliopiston ja Kokkolan yliopistokeskus Chydeniuksen välillä käyty keskustelua kauppatieteellisten maisteriopintojen käynnistämisestä Kokkolassa. Kari Ristimäen vuonna 2004 tekemässä selvityksessä arvioitiin maisterikoulutuksen tarpeellisuutta elinkeinoelämän näkökulmasta, sen perusteella alueella oli tuolloin riittävästi potentiaalia kyseisille opinnoille. Ajan kuluessa näkemys on vahvistunut lukuisien opinnoista kiinnostuneiden yhteydenottojen ja alueen toimijoilla kohdattujen tarpeiden perusteella. Kokkolan yliopistokeskus Chydenius ja Vaasan yliopiston kauppatieteellinen tiedekunta alkoivat tehdä vuoden 2014 aikana suunnittelutyötä maisteriopi…
Theories of Context, Theorizing Context
2014
Theories of meaning, even outspokenly textualist ones, have always dealt with the question of relevant context as well, to some extent at least. In many fields of research, the idea of an encompassing theory of context has surfaced now and then, and there have also been actual attempts at such a theory, some of which are discussed in this article. At the same time the very concept of context is difficult in many ways. The term has been said to be one of the most widely used and widely abused terms in the humanities and social sciences. Brenda Dervin claims that »there is no term that is more often used, less often defined, and when defined defined so variously as context« (Dervin 1997, 13–1…
Bringing teaching back in: The Norwegian NOU The school of the future in light of the Allgemeine Didaktik theory of Wolfgang Klafki
2016
This paper discusses possible knowledge-related challenges in the Norwegian NOU report, entitled The school of the future (2015), in light of the Allgemeine Didaktik theory of Wolfgang Klafki. Why German Didaktik is relevant to the development of future-oriented curriculum theory is firstly explained in relation to the future prospects and concepts of knowledge recently theorised by Michael Young and colleagues. Klafki’s concepts of material-, formal- and categorical Bildung are used to analyse the epistemology inherent in the NOU report’s vision of the curriculum. The paper finds that the main knowledge-related challenge in the report is the subordination of content knowledge to competence…
Musiikki muutoksena : informaation ja musiikin epistemologiset syväyhteydet fenomenologisessa viitekehyksessä
2017
Kun pyritään tutkimaan musiikin ja kokemuksellisuuden suhdetta, on löydettävä epistemologinen jatkuvuus tarkasteltavien ilmiöiden välille. Jos esimerkiksi musiikin kokemuksellisuus luonnollistetaan muutoksiksi organismissa, eli tarkastellaan fysiologisia vasteita suhteessa aistittavaan ilmiöön, ei ole aina johdonmukaista pyrkiä jäsentämään musiikkia perinteisten kulttuurisidonnaisten musiikkianalyyttisten käsitteiden kautta. Data, joka saadaan fysiologisista vasteista on verrattaen välitöntä suhteessa musiikkianalyyttisiin käsitteisiin. Tutkielman tavoitteena on muodostaa käsitys musiikin kokemuksellisuuden tutkimisen epistemologisista haasteista informaation käsitettä…
Developing mixed methods research in sport and exercise psychology: potential contributions of a critical realist perspective
2020
Notwithstanding diverse opinions and debates about mixing methods, mixed methods research (MMR) is increasingly being used in sport and exercise psychology. In this paper, we describe MMR trends within leading sport and exercise psychology journals and explore critical realism as a possible underpinning framework for conducting MMR. Our meta-study of recent empirical mixed methods studies published in 2017–2019 indicates that eight (36%) of the 22 MMR studies explicitly stated a paradigmatic position (five drew on pragmatism, two switched paradigms between qualitative and quantitative elements of the study, and one was situated in relativist-interpretivism). The remaining 14 (64%) studies d…
Elisabeth on Free Will, Preordination, and Philosophical Doubt
2021
Elisabeth is widely known as a critic of René Descartes' account of mind--body interaction and scholarly interpretations of her view on the will most often pose the question about the freedom of the will in relation to bodily impulses such as the passions. This chapter takes a different perspective and focuses on the problem of the compatibility of free will and providence, as it is discussed in a sequence of six letters that Elisabeth and Descartes wrote between September 1645 and January 1646. The chapter focuses on this specific metaphysical problem in order to ask what Elisabeth's remarks on the topic can tell about her general philosophical method as well as about her particular philos…
