The theory of meaning and interpretation, drawing on philosophical hermeneutics and the work of Gadamer and Heidegger, and its alignment with phenomenological thought is presented. AbstractResearch has shown that students differ in their abilities to evaluate the credibility of online texts, and, in general, many perform poorly on online evaluation tasks. This study extended current knowledge by examining students’ abilities to justify the credibility of online texts from different perspectives, thus providing a more nuanced understanding of students’ credibility evaluation ability. We examined how upper secondary school students (N = 73; aged 16 to 17) evaluated author expertise, author intention, the publication venue, and the quality of evidence when reading four texts about the effects of sugar consumption in a web-based environment. This paper explicates Husserl’s usage of what he calls “radical Besinnung” in Formale und transzendentale Logik (1929). Husserl introduces radical Besinnung as his method in the introduction to FTL. Artikkelissa tutkitaan taloustiedettä episteemisenä yhteisönä ja tämän episteemisen yhteisön käyttämiä retorisia keinoja rajojensa puolustamiseen. Episteemisen yhteisön teoria korostaa jaettuja metodologisia lähtökohtia ja arvolähtökohtia yhteisöjen koossapitävinä voimina, minkä lisäksi taloustiede on havaittu tutkimuksessa erityisen metodologisesti eristäytyneeksi. Artikkelissa eritellään taloustieteilijöiden episteemisen yhteisön suomalaisessa julkisuudessa käyttämiä retorisia strategioita sosiaalisesta mediasta kerätyn aineiston avulla. Aineistosta erottuvat strategiat ovat epäsymmetrinen näytön vaatiminen, auktoriteetin kieltäminen ja kaksoisstandardi.

Mobilizing ‘context’: Vocabulary checks in ESL tutoring sessions

This study investigates the practice of unplanned and emergent vocabulary checks, i.e. turns through which a speaker explicitly checks whether the recipient knows a word, in small-group tutorial instruction. The data are video-recorded English as a second language (ESL) tutoring sessions between a native English speaker tutor and ESL students at an urban community college in the United States. By drawing on conversation analysis, we analyze how vocabulary checks emerge sequentially and with the help of contextual interactional resources.
