Accessible stories within mediascapes. Voicing otherness in digital museums

2022

This article presents the first steps in the investigation of the potential for digital storytelling and digital museums to be used as instruments for access, as enablers of epistemic and poietic agency. Digital storytelling and migration museums are used as a case study to explore in what ways digital storytelling impacts meaning-making processes performed by migrants, allowing them to become active creators and disseminators of their own experiences. Through the combination of corpus linguistics, systemic functional linguistics, and lexical semantic analysis, an ad-hoc comparable corpus of migrant narratives in English and in Italian was cross-examined in order to scrutinise the conceptua…

Basis for a general theory of organizations

2011

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify the conceptual basis shared by different theories, regardless of the unit of analysis they specifically adopt. The different ontological choice (or different segment of reality studied by each theory) does not hinder conceptual common ground for a good number of organisational theories.Design/methodology/approach – The paper highlights the importance of hierarchical, social and institutional relations and of the technological, cognitive, social and institutional contents. It looks at the common conceptual contents of the two main theories examined, and those of a wide set of other theories addressed here. Both of the theories examined are i…

Statistical physics: Some basic principles of fluctuation and noise theory

1983

Abstract Models have traditionally played a significant role in statistical mechanics. In view of the complexity of the system which statistical mechanics attempt to describe, this is not at all surprising. The study of simplified models has frequently revealed the underlying mathematical structure of many physical questions and in so doing the study of models has contributed directly to a clarification of several paradoxes which beset statistical mechanics. In this paper some of the models which appear to be useful for the discussion of non-equilibrium phenomena are examined in some detail. As usual these models are extremely simplified versions of the actual situations. It is, finally, as…

Lo verosímil en la ética de Aristóteles: una aporía en el vocabulario filosófico griego

2007

While the mainstream of modern moral philosophy has always assumed that the characteristic situation in moral judgments should be the certitude, Aristotle’s moral philosophy is dominated by the idea of verisimilitude. As a matter of fact, its main concept, namely «virtue», is doubly permeated by this idea, both in its psychological and epistemological sides: we cannot know with certitude (only with verisimilitude) what is entailed by the adscription of a virtue (e.g. generosity), both generally and in a particular case. Nevertheless, verisimilitude is a good enough ground for action.

The singular fate of Genetics in the History of French Biology, 1900-1940

1988

In this study we have examined the reception of Mendelism in France from 1900 to 1940, and the place of some of the extra-Mendelian traditions of research that contributed to the development of genetics in France after World War II. Our major findings are: (1) Mendelism was widely disseminated in France and thoroughly understood by many French biologists from 1900 on. With the notable exception of Lucien Cuenot, however, there were few fundamental contributions to the Mendelian tradition, and virtually none from about 1915 to the midthirties. Prior to 1900, Cuenot's work was already marked by a striking interest in physiological mechanisms; his physiological preoccupations played a consider…

Geocriticism: for an interpretation of the Romanian novel about the Revolution of 1989

2019

Abstract The main aim of this paper is to present a recent approach to literary text- the geocritical method- both from a descriptive and a polemic point of view, and, at the same time, to determine the applicability of this method and the concepts issued by Betrand Westphal on the Romanian novel describing Bucharest during the Revolution of 1989. Following the routes presented in the novels of two contemporary authors, Mircea Cărtărescu and Bogdan Suceava, I will try to propose a new method of topos analysis in the novel, which could re-evaluate the representation of the spaces caught at the boundary between reality and fiction (in the future).

Neogeografia. Per un nuovo immaginario terrestre

2019

Participation, geography and social media. Discussing method

2022

The chapter, from a cultural geographical perspective, offers a reflection on the research methodology used to study some social media. More particularly, starting from the case of the Facebook group “Palermo di una volta” (“Palermo of the past”), subject of a previous study, the results achieved through the analysis of the research process are retraced. The group, in fact, for the many members (hundreds of thousands) who are part of it, is an opportunity to reconstruct the geography of places in the city, both in their contemporaneity and in their historical context, in an intertwining of individual and collective narratives. Regardless of the formal correctness of the information the grou…
