Hydrolysis and chemical speciation of dioxouranium(VI) ion in aqueous media simulating the major ion composition of seawater

2004

Abstract The hydrolysis and chemical speciation of the dioxouranium(VI) ion at 25 °C was studied in a number of binary electrolytes (LiCl, NaCl, MgCl2, CaCl2, Na2SO4) and some mixtures (NaCl–Na2SO4, NaNO3–Na2SO4, CaCl2–MgCl2) as well as artificial seawater (SSWE) as a function of ionic strength. The results in LiCl, CaCl2 and MgCl2 solutions confirmed the formation of (UO2)2(OH)22+, (UO2)3(OH)42+, (UO2)3(OH)5+ and (UO2)3(OH)7− species (at I=0 mol l−1: log Tβ22=−5.76, log Tβ34=−11.82, log Tβ35=−15.89 and log Tβ37=−29.26). For NaNO3, NaCl and artificial seawater the hydrolysis constant for the formation of the UO2(OH)+ species was also determined (at I=0 mol l−1: log Tβ11=−5.19). The results …

A stellar flare-coronal mass ejection event revealed by X-ray plasma motions

2019

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs), often associated with flares, are the most powerful magnetic phenomena occurring on the Sun. Stars show magnetic activity levels up to 10^4 times higher, and CME effects on stellar physics and circumstellar environments are predicted to be significant. However, stellar CMEs remain observationally unexplored. Using time-resolved high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of a stellar flare on the active star HR 9024 observed with Chandra/HETGS, we distinctly detected Doppler shifts in S XVI, Si XIV, and Mg XII lines that indicate upward and downward motions of hot plasmas (~10-25 MK) within the flaring loop, with velocity v~100-400 km/s, in agreement with a model of fl…

Circumstellar Disks in the Outer Galaxy: the Star-Forming Region NGC 1893

2008

It is still debated whether star formation process depends on environment. In particular it is yet unclear whether star formation in the outer Galaxy, where the environmental conditions are, theoretically, less conducive, occurs in the same way as in the inner Galaxy. We investigate the population of NGC1893, a young cluster ~3-4 Myr in the outer part of the Galaxy (galactic radius >11 Kpc), to explore the effects of environmental conditions on star forming regions. We present infrared observations acquired using the IRAC camera onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope and analyze the color-color diagrams to establish the membership of stars with excesses. We also merge this information with …

Correlation between the spatial distribution of circumstellar disks and massive stars in the young open cluster NGC 6611

2009

Context: the observations of the proplyds in the Orion Nebula Cluster, showing clear evidence of ongoing photoevaporation, have provided a clear proof about the role of the externally induced photoevaporation in the evolution of circumstellar disks. NGC 6611 is an open cluster suitable to study disk photoevaporation, thanks to its large population of massive members and of stars with disk. In a previous work, we obtained evidence of the influence of the strong UV field generated by the massive cluster members on the evolution of disks around low-mass Pre-Main Sequence members. That work was based on a multi-band BVIJHK and X-ray catalog purposely compiled to select the cluster members with …

Hydrolysis and chemical speciation of (C2H5)2Sn2+, (C2H5)3Sn+ and (C3H7)3Sn+ in aqueous media simulating the major composition of natural waters

2001

The hydrolysis of (C 2 H 5 ) 2 Sn 2+ , (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Sn + and (n-C 3 H 7 ) 3 Sn + has been studied, by potentiometric measurements ([H + ]-glass electrode), in NaNO 3 , NaCl, NaCl/Na 2 SO 4 mixtures and in a synthetic seawater (SSWE), as an ionic medium simulating the major composition of natural seawater, at different ionic strengths (0 ≤ I ≤ 5 mol dm -3 ) and salinities (15 ≤ S ≤ 45), and at t = 25 °C. Five hydrolytic species for (C 2 H 5 ) 2 Sn 2+ , three for (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Sn + and two for (C 3 H 7 ) 3 Sn + are found. Interactions with the anion components of SSWE, considered as single-salt seawater, are determined by means of a complex formation model. A predictive equation for the calcul…

Modelling of natural synthetic polyelectrolyte interactions in natural waters by using SIT, Pitzer and Ion Pairing approaches

2006

Abstract In this paper SIT and Pitzer models are used for the first time to describe the interactions of natural and synthetic polyelectrolytes in natural waters. Measurements were made potentiometrically at 25 °C in single electrolyte media, such as Et 4 NI and NaCl (for fulvic acid 0.1  − 1 S single salt ” BA, with cation B and anion A representing all the major cations (Na + , K + , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ ) and anions (Cl − , SO 4 2− ) in natural sea water, respectively. The ion pair formation model was also applied to fulvate and alginate in artificial sea water by examining the interaction of polyanions with the single sea water cation. Results were compared with those obtained from previous sp…

HST/WFC3 Confirmation of the Inside-out Growth of Massive Galaxies at 0 < z < 2 and Identification of Their Star-forming Progenitors at z ~ 3

2013

We study the structural evolution of massive galaxies by linking progenitors and descendants at a constant cumulative number density of n_c=1.4x10^{-4} Mpc^{-3} to z~3. Structural parameters were measured by fitting Sersic profiles to high resolution CANDELS HST WFC3 J_{125} and H_{160} imaging in the UKIDSS-UDS at 1<z<3 and ACS I_{814} imaging in COSMOS at 0.25<z<1. At a given redshift, we selected the HST band that most closely samples a common rest-frame wavelength so as to minimize systematics from color gradients in galaxies. At fixed n_c, galaxies grow in stellar mass by a factor of ~3 from z~3 to z~0. The size evolution is complex: galaxies appear roughly constant in size from z~3 to…

SAX J1808.4-3658, an accreting millisecond pulsar shining in gamma rays?

2016

We report the detection of a possible gamma-ray counterpart of the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658. The analysis of ~6 years of data from the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi-LAT) within a region of 15deg radius around the position of the pulsar reveals a point gamma-ray source detected at a significance of ~6 sigma (Test Statistic TS = 32), with position compatible with that of SAX J1808.4-3658 within 95% Confidence Level. The energy flux in the energy range between 0.6 GeV and 10 GeV amounts to (2.1 +- 0.5) x 10-12 erg cm-2 s-1 and the spectrum is well-represented by a power-law function with photon index 2.1 +- 0.1. We searched for si…
