Efficient Optical Amplification in a Sandwich-Type Active-Passive Polymer Waveguide Containing Perylenediimides
2017
Polymer waveguides doped with luminescent materials serve as a suitable flexible platform for active elements (lasers and amplifiers) in on-chip optical circuits. However, at present, the best parameters (lowest thresholds) achieved with these devices are obtained with the use of the stripe excitation technique in the framework of which external illumination of an active material along the whole length of the waveguide is realized that is not convenient for the waveguide on-chip integration and requires high peak energies due to the large excitation area. In the present work, an elegant method is proposed to overcome this obstacle and provide efficient active material pumping along the whol…
"Smart" defects in colloidal photonic crystals
2005
AbstractWe present a bottom-up approach for the construction of "Smart" active defects in colloidal photonic crystals (CPCs). These structures incorporate polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) planar defects embedded in silica CPCs through a combination of evaporation induced self-assembly and microcontact transfer printing. We show how the enormous chemical diversity inherent to PEMs can be harnessed to create chemically active defect structures responsive to solvent vapor pressures, light, temperature as well as redox cycling. A sharp transmission state within the photonic stopband, induced by the PEM defect, can be precisely, reproducibly and in some cases reversibly tuned by these external s…
Semiflexible Polymers in the Bulk and Confined by Planar Walls
2016
Semiflexible polymers in solution under good solvent conditions can undergo an isotropic-nematic transition. This transition is reminiscent of the well-known entropically-driven transition of hard rods described by Onsager’s theory, but the flexibility of the macromolecules causes specific differences in behavior, such as anomalous long wavelength fluctuations in the ordered phase, which can be understood by the concept of the deflection length. A brief review of the recent progress in the understanding of these problems is given, summarizing results obtained by large-scale molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory. These results include also the interaction of semiflexib…
An experimental analysis of thick-film solid-state reference electrodes
2012
Thick-Film planar solid-state Silver/Silver Chloride (Ag/AgCl) reference electrodes were developed and tested for ion susceptibility and long term drift in approximately 0.04 M potassium chloride (KCl) solution. Various types of electrodes were tested exhibiting stabilities down to 2 millivolts per decade change of chloride concentration. It is demonstrated that Thick-Film reference electrodes are suitable for use in underground soil measurements due to their ruggedness and robustness.
Proton implanted waveguides in LiNbO3, KNbO3and BaTiO3
1992
Abstract By using a Van De Graaf accelerator, planar waveguides in LiNbO3, KNbO3, and BaTiO3 are fabricated (at 300 K) by thermally controlled proton implantation. The waveguide properties are investigated by dark line mode spectroscopy. The reconstructed profiles closely follow the ion concentration profiles as determined by simulation (TRIM).

An automated procedure for computing the packing properties of dense and locked sands by image analysis of thin sections
2014
The macroscopic mechanical behaviour of dense sands originates to a great extent from their microstructural characteristics such as the coordination number, the grain contact and the packing density indexes. The study of intergranular contacts and the reckoning of these indexes may be carried out on planar images of the grains either by means of time-consuming visual inspection assisted by CAD or by automatic image analysis. An innovative method for the automatic determination of microstructural characteristics of sands based on image analysis of thin section is proposed. Tests performed on a locked sand show that the proposed method is much more effective, convenient and faster than the us…
Optical propagation loss measurements in electro optical host-guest waveguides
2013
Thin organic waveguiding layers are applied more and more frequently as optical components in novel optoelectronic devices. For development of such devices it is important to know the optical properties of the used waveguides. One of the most important parameters is optical propagation loss in the waveguide. In this paper we present optical propagation loss measurements in planar electro optical waveguides using travelling fiber method. Using this method attenuation coefficient α at 633 nm as a function of chromophore concentration for the first two guiding modes in the slab waveguide was determined.
Second harmonic generation in coupled LiNbO3 waveguides by reverse-proton exchange
2003
We demonstrate second harmonic generation of a near-infrared pump in a nonlinearly coupled system formed by longitudinally uniform proton- and reverse-proton-exchanged LiNbO/sub 3/ planar waveguides. Phase- and mode-matched transverse electric (TE/sub 0/) frequency doubling into transverse magnetic higher order guided modes is achieved through temperature control, in agreement with the model.
Optical Sensor for Real-Time Detection of Trichlorofluoromethane
2019
Trichlorofluoromethane was once a promising and versatile applicable chlorofluorocarbon. Unaware of its ozone-depleting character, for a long time it was globally applied as propellant and refrigerant and thus led to significant thinning of the ozone layer and contributed to the formation of the so-called ozone hole. Although production and application of this substance were gradually reduced at an early stage, we still face the consequences of its former careless use. Today, trichlorofluoromethane is released during recycling processes of waste cooling devices, traded on the black market, and according to recent findings still illegally manufactured. Here, we present an optical sensor devi…
