Quasi-isometrically embedded subgroups of braid and diffeomorphism groups

We show that a large class of right-angled Artin groups (in particular, those with planar complementary defining graph) can be embedded quasi-isometrically in pure braid groups and in the group of area preserving diffeomorphisms of the disk fixing the boundary (with respect to the $L^2$-norm metric); this extends results of Benaim and Gambaudo who gave quasi-isometric embeddings of $F\_n$ and $\Z^n$ for all $n>0$. As a consequence we are also able to embed a variety of Gromov hyperbolic groups quasi-isometrically in pure braid groups and in the diffeomorphism group of the disk. Observation of laser-induced field-free permanent planar alignment of molecules

International audience; Permanent planar alignment of gas-phase linear molecules is achieved by a pair of delayed perpendicularly polarized short laser pulses. The experiment is performed in a supersonic jet, ensuring a relatively high number density of molecules with moderately low rotational temperature. The effect is optically probed on a femtosecond time scale by the use of a third short pulse, enabling a time-resolved birefringence detection performed successively in two perpendicular planes of the laboratory frame. Integrated low drive voltage electro-optic Bragg modulator using a, periodically poled lithium niobate

Periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) is currently used for frequency conversions using quasi-phase-matching, thanks to its high nonlinear coefficients and mature poling process. PPLN can also be attractive for electro-optic (EO) applications. Several studies have been conducted on PPLN-based EO deflectors, and recent realizations have lower the required applied voltage under hundred volts [1]. Indeed, for practical EO applications drive voltages as low as 5 V are usually required. Low drive voltage electro-optic Bragg deflector using a periodically poled lithium niobate planar waveguide

International audience; An electro-optic Bragg light deflector is demonstrated in a thinned, periodically poled lithium niobate planar waveguide confined between two silica layers on a silicon substrate. More than 97% of diffraction efficiency is obtained with an operating wavelength of 633 nm for the two orthogonal light polarizations with a drive voltage of about 5 V. The temporal electric drift and the response time of the component are also studied.

This work deals with the interfacial mixing mechanism of picoliter (pL)-scale droplets produced by sequential inkjet printing of organic-based inks onto ITO/PET surfaces at a moderately high Weber number (~101). Differently from solution dispensing processes at a high Bond number such as spin coating, the deposition by inkjet printing is strictly controlled by droplet velocity, ink viscosity, and surface tension. International audience; A general synthesis of highly functionalized ferrocenes, which include (P,B)- and (N,B)-ambiphiles, has been developed at a multigram scale. Diastereoselective stepwise modification of di-tert-butylated ferrocenes included the unprecedented separation of electroactive species. Bulky alkyl groups on ferrocenes ensure planar chirality of ambiphiles and enforce closer proximity of antagonist Lewis functions.
