A directional spectral mixture analysis method: application to multiangular airborne measurements

This study aims at developing an operational approach-namely, directional spectral mixture analysis (DISMA)-for retrieving vegetation parameters like fractional vegetation cover (FVC) and leaf area index (LAI) from multispectral and multiangular data. The approach attempts to highlight the consistency of one-dimensional models and linear mixture approaches. Field-portable Mössbauer spectroscopy on Earth, the Moon, Mars, and beyond

ABSTRACT Iron occurs naturally as Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ , and, to a lesser extent, as Fe 0 . Many fundamental (bio)geochemical processes are based on redox cycling between these oxidation states. Mossbauer spectroscopy provides quantitative information about the distribution of Fe among its oxidation states, identification of Fe-bearing phases, and relative distribution of Fe among those phases. Portable, miniaturised Mossbauer spectrometers were developed for NASA9s Mars Exploration Rovers (in operation since 2004) and provide a means for non-destructive, in-situ field investigations. Pathogenicity of intrathoracically administrated Bacillus thuringiensis spores in Blatta orientalis.

Abstract The ability of Bacillus thuringiensis to produce septicaemia in Periplaneta americana and Blatta orientalis has been investigated. Spores and crystals from several wild-type strains as well as spores of a B. thuringiensis crystal-deficient mutant, were first orally administrated at high doses, and no significant mortality was recorded. Intrathoracic injection of spore suspensions in P. americana revealed that this species is not very susceptible to B. thuringiensis spores. A possible solution of the puzzling variation of the orbital period of MXB 1659-298

MXB 1659-298 is a transient neutron star Low-Mass X-ray binary system that shows eclipses with a periodicity of 7.1 hr. The source went to outburst in August 2015 after 14 years of quiescence. We investigate the orbital properties of this source with a baseline of 40 years obtained combining the eight eclipse arrival times present in literature with 51 eclipse arrival times collected during the last two outbursts. A quadratic ephemeris does not fit the delays associated with the eclipse arrival times and the addition of a sinusoidal term with a period of $2.31 \pm 0.02$ yr is required. The effect of ISM absorption on stellar activity measurements and its relevance for exoplanet studies

Past UV and optical observations of stars hosting hot Jupiters have shown that some of these stars present an anomalously low chromospheric activity, significantly below the basal level. For WASP-13, observations have shown that the apparent lack of activity is possibly caused by absorption from the intervening ISM. Inspired by this result, we study the effect of ISM absorption on activity measurements (S and logR'$_{\rm HK}$ indices) for main-sequence late-type stars. Correcting the effect of stellar spots on ARIEL transmission spectra – II. The limb-darkening effect

This paper is part of an effort to correct the transmission spectra of a transiting planet orbiting an active star. In Paper I (Cracchiolo et al. 2020) we have demonstrated a methodology to minimize the potential bias induced by unocculted star spots on the transmission spectrum, assuming a spot model parameterized by filling factor and temperature. In this work we introduce the limb darkening effect, therefore the position of the spot in the stellar disk and the impact parameter of the transiting planet now play a key role. Understanding stellar activity in M dwarfs is fundamental to improving our knowledge of the physics of stellar atmospheres and for planet search programmes.
