‘My Language! Heavens!’: Strange Tongues and the Denial of Mimesis in The Tempest

2008

On the sensitivity of bridge seismic response with local soil amplification

1998

The paper presents a numerical sensitivity study of the local site effects on structural response. Following a recently developed model of spatial coherency and a concept of a simple site coefficient the local site effects are modelled as filtrations of excitation processes with a frequency shift. An analysis of a bridge response with supports founded on different soils is carried out. The joint effects of dynamic response and pseudostatic motion are considered. Two types of response are analysed: longitudinal and transverse. The differences between dynamic displacements and force responses are pointed out.

Conductes de risc associades en jugadors patològics i professionals de pòquer i escacs

2016

The Uprooting in the Narrative Language of Foreign Land by Jonathan Raban

2022

The language and narrative style of Jonathan Raban, a contemporary English writer author of the novel Foreign Land (1985), seem to find in the themes of uprooting and self-searching a metaphorical and existential interpretation that in the search for identity alternates the desire to return to the origins, recovering lost affections and beloved places, with the attraction to the unknown. In this oscillation, masterfully rendered by the metaphorical and figurative language of the novel, Raban tells the awareness that the return to the origins is not always a point of arrival but a further turning point in life. The article focuses on some particularly effective linguistic and semantic aspect…

Column-integrated aerosol optical properties in the free troposphere: case study-Sierra Nevada, Spain

2004

From spectral solar irradiance extinction measurements in the visible range carried out at Sierra Nevada (2950 m a.s.l.) during July 1998, the characteristics of the aerosol column in the free troposphere have been measured. The results show that in stable atmospheric conditions, the column-integrated aerosol takes an optical depth (AOD) at 500 nm of 0.02 /spl plusmn/ 0.02, and an average radius in the accumulation mode of 0.15 /spl mu/m, with a likely Atlantic origin. In unstable situations, the AOD at 500 nm can increase by more than an order of magnitude, and the aerosols' origin is uncertain, since air masses can arrive from different sources at different altitudes.

The Influence of Trace Substances on the Atmospheric Energy Budget

1979

ABSTRACT The most effective absorbers of solar radiation in the system earth-atmosphere are the earth's surface layer, the atmospheric water vapor, ozone and oxygen. In the troposphere water vapor is dominant, in the lower stratosphere ozone. The absorption contribution due to carbon dioxide may be neglected in both regions of the atmosphere. The contribution of aerosol particles is significant only close to the earth's surface. Here the absorption by aerosol particles equals the effect by water vapor. This fact and the following properties of aerosol particles motivate a special treatment. Particles absorb; particles scatter and elongate the optical path of solar radiation through the abso…

Effects of model configuration for superparametrised long-term simulations – Implementation of a cloud resolving model in EMAC (v2.50)

2019

Abstract. A new module has been implemented in the ECHAM5/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) Model that simulates cloud related processes on a much smaller grid. This so called superparametrisation acts as a replacement for the convection parametrisation and large-scale cloud scheme. The concept of embedding an ensemble of cloud resolving models (CRMs) inside of each grid box of a general circulation model leads to an explicit representation of cloud dynamics. The new model component is evaluated against observations and the conventional usage of EMAC using a convection parametrisation. In particular, effects of applying different configurations of the superparametrisation are analyzed in a…
