Photoreactive Langmuir–Blodgett–Kuhn multilayer assemblies from functionalized liquid-crystalline side chain polymers, I. Homopolymers containing azo…

1991

Stable monomolecular layers of a liquid-crystalline homopolymer bearing azobenzene chromophores in the mesogenic side groups could be prepared at the water–air interface by slow compression at room temperature. From the area per monomer unit of A0≈0.25 nm2 a structural model with tightly packed azobenzene groups oriented nearly parallel to the surface normal was deduced. After transfer to a solid support in a Y-type mode the obtained Langmuir–Blodgett–Kuhn (LBK) multilayer assemblies of varying thicknesses (from a double layer to a thick film of d = 238 nm, capable of guiding optical modes) were prepared and analyzed by X-ray reflection and optical evanescent wave techniques. A monolayer th…

Discotic liquid crystals at the air water interface

1991

The monolayer properties of two types of discotic liquid crystals, hexasubstituted triphenylenes 1 and azo derivatives of phloroglucinol 5, were examined. First investigations show that these discotic liquid crystals form stable monolayers. It could be shown that electron acceptors insert into the monolayer of 1. Azo discs display a packing behaviour at the monolayer that is ascribed to a side-on packing of the molecules.

Control of endothelial cell adhesion to polymer surface by ion implantation

2001

The bio-compatibility of ion implanted polymers has been studied by means of in vitro attachment measurements of bovine aorta endothelial cells. The specimens used were polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE). He+ and Ne+ ion implantation were performed at an energy of 150 keV with fluences between 1 × 1013 to 1 × 1017ions/cm2 at room temperature. Wettability was estimated by means of a sessile drop method. The chemical and physical structures of ion implanted polymers were investigated by contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis in relation to cell attachment behavior. The…

Neutron reflectometry studies on the interfacial width between polystyrene and various poly(alkylmethacrylates)

1999

From neutron reflectometry we have obtained the interfacial width (typically 2-8 nm) between incompatible polymers above the glass transition temperatures. The investigated polymer bilayers consist of a deuterated polystyrene top layer and various poly(alkylmethacrylates) as a bottom layer. We obtained interesting effects of the length of the alkyl group on the interfacial width. Using mean-field theory we calculate Flory-Huggins-Stavermann interaction parameters X from the interfacial width a I data. These results are compared with investigations of the interfacial width between deuterated poly(methylmethacrylate) and respective polyalkyl-methacrylates.

Synthesis of Processable Inorganic‐Organic Hybrid Polymers Based on Poly(silsesquioxanes): Grafting from Polymerization Using ATRP

2008

Inorganic-organic hybrid polymers have been synthesized utilizing atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from a functionalized poly(methylsilsesquioxane) (PMSSQ) macroinitiator. Different polymeric ATRP initiators were prepared by co-condensation of functionalized trichlorosilanes with methyltrimethoxysilane. Various vinyl monomers have been successfully grafted from these macroinitiators, demonstrating a highly variable synthetic concept, which offers the chance to synthesize a wide spectrum of inorganic-organic hybrid polymers. All synthesized polymers were soluble in various organic solvents. Spin-coating these hybrid materials onto various substrates could produce stable and adhere…

Nanoscale hybrid silica/polymer Janus particles with a double-responsive hemicorona

2015

Abstract We report a versatile large-scale synthesis strategy for hybrid Janus nanoparticles with a silica core and a unilaterally attached polymer corona in a size range below 100 nm. The stimuli-responsive behavior of these nanoparticles with a poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) hemicorona is investigated. The synthesis is based on a modified version of the Pickering emulsion polymerization technique in combination with surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) in a “grafting from” approach. In a first step, poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) latex particles are prepared via Pickering emulsion polymerization. Colloidal stability is provided by 30 nm silica nan…

In situ gel forming graft copolymers of a polyaspartamide and polylactic acid: Preparation and characterization

2008

Abstract In situ gel forming systems have been prepared by linking polylactic acid (PLA) to a water soluble and polyfunctional polymer, such as α,β-poly( N -2-hydroxyethyl)- d , l -aspartamide (PHEA). Three graft copolymers PHEA–PLA with a different derivatization degree in PLA, have been synthesized and characterized. PHEA–PLA graft copolymer with the highest amount in PLA has been used to prepare solutions in organic solvents able to give rise to gel-like matrices when injected into phosphate buffered saline solution. The chemical degradation of these gels has been evaluated and in vitro tests have been performed to evaluate the cell compatibility of the hydrolysis products. The possibili…

Glycopolymer Functionalization of Engineered Spider Silk Protein-based Materials for Improved Cell Adhesion

2014

Silk protein-based materials are promising biomaterials for application as tissue scaffolds, due to their processability, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. The preparation of films composed of an engineered spider silk protein (eADF4(C16)) and their functionalization with glycopolymers are described. The glycopolymers bind proteins found in the extracellular matrix, providing a biomimetic coating on the films that improves cell adhesion to the surfaces of engineered spider silk films. Such silk-based materials have potential as coatings for degradable implantable devices.

Design, Synthesis, and Use of Y-Shaped ATRP/NMP Surface Tethered Initiator.

2015

Heterogeneous polymer brushes on surfaces can be easily formed from a binary initiator on a silicon oxide substrate where two different types of polymers can be grown side-by-side. Herein, we designed a new Y-shaped binary initiator using straightforward chemistry for “grafting from” polymer brushes. This initiator synthesis takes advantage of the Passerini reaction, a multicomponent reaction combining two initiator sites and one surface linking site. This Y-shaped binary initiator can be synthesized in three steps with a higher yield than other similar initiators reported in the literature, and can be performed on a multigram scale. We were able to attach the initiator to a silicon oxide s…
