Influence of plasticizers suggests role of topology in polymer solidification at high cooling rates
2012
Although solidification in processing deter- mines short- and long-term properties, methods for under- standing polymer crystallization mostly rely on real time experiments. Their evidences being drawn on time scales farther apart with respect to those experienced in process- ing. Nor significant outcomes have been so far drawn with approaches mimicking the typical processing times, the Continuous Cooling Transformation methods. Use of these techniques has indeed been limited to a heuristic interpretation of the structure developed under extreme solidification conditions without suggesting alternative routes to the understanding or even clues to the many open questions on polymer crystalliz…
Cellulose-click-ferrocenes as docking spots for cyclodextrin
2012
A novel synthesis of ferrocene-modified cellulose, prepared from 6-azido-6-deoxy-cellulose and ethynylferrocene, is presented. The two components were coupled via copper-catalyzed click-type cycloaddition under microwave-assisted conditions. The surface structure of the cellulose derivative was investigated in comparison with that of pure, microcrystalline cellulose using electron microscopy (scanning, transmission and scanning transmission), showing iron atoms of ferrocene as homogeneously distributed particles. They are detectable as clear signals in the energy-dispersive X-ray profile. In addition, Rame-β-cyclodextrin was supramolecularly attached to cellulose and the complex formed was …
Cyclodextrins in polymer synthesis: free radical polymerization of cyclodextrin complexes with oxazoline-functionalized vinyl monomers as guest molec…
2000
The synthesis of five new oxazoline functionalized vinyl monomers N-[4-(4′,5′-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)phenyl]acrylamide (3 a), N-[4-(4′,5′-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)phenyl]-2-methylacrylamide (3 b), N-{10-[4-(4′,5′-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)phenylcarbamoyl]decyl}-2-acrylamide (5 a), N-{10-[4-(4′,5′-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)phenylcarbamoyl]decyl}-2-methylacrylamide (5 b) and N-[4-(4′,5′-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)-phenyl]-4-vinylbenzamide (7) is described. With an equimolar amount of 2,6-dimethyl-β-cyclodextrin (DMCD) these monomers formed hydrophilic inclusion complexes 3 a,b-DMCD, 5 a,b-DMCD and 7-DMCD. These complexes were polymerized radically in an aqueous medium. Resulting polymers P-(3 a, b), P-(5 a, b) and P-(7) pre…
Functional Group Distribution and Gradient Structure Resulting from the Living Anionic Copolymerization of Styrene and para-But-3-enyl Styrene
2014
The functional group distribution along the polymer backbone resulting from the living anionic copolymerization of styrene (S) and para-but-3-enyl styrene (pBuS) was investigated in cyclohexane at room temperature. A variety of copolymers with different comonomer contents x(S) = 0–0.84 have been synthesized with molecular weight dispersities Mw/Mn ≤1.12. All polymers have been characterized in detail by 1H NMR spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A detailed understanding of the monomer sequence distribution during the copolymerization was achieved by real-time 1H NMR spectroscopy. This technique permits us to determine the changing …
Some monomers, oligomers and polymers with conjugated triple bonds
1991
In the first part new monoaminodiacetylenes with different numbers of CH2-groups, the formation of Perowskit-type Mn complexes and their polymerizability are described. Symmetrical diaminodiacetylenes and some derivatives therefrom have also been prepared. The second part deals with different types of polymers with diacetylene units in the backbone. Under irradiation color formation and crosslinking take place. Well-defined low molecular weight model compounds of polydiacetylenes is the subject of the third part. Finally rod-like but soluble polymers with alternating p-phenylene and acetylene units are described.
Diffusion of spherical micronetworks in polymer diluent systems and melts studied by dynamic light scattering techniques
1994
Spherical polystyrene (PS) micronetworks can be prepared in microemulsion with bulk radii of 5–60 nm and different cross-linking densities. The diffusion of these PS spheres has been studied in polymer diluent systems ranging from dilute solutions to plasticized melts by using forced Rayleigh scattering and photon correlation spectroscopy. On increasing the PS concentration, a colloid glass transition is observed at a volume fraction ΦC ≈ 0.64 of the swollen spheres. At higher concentration inside the “colloid glass” state the sphere diffusion is slowed down and becomes very complex but can be observed up to the limit of a melt of collapsed spheres.
A Precursor Route to Supramolecular Oligo(p-phenylene terephthalamide) Block Copolymers
2008
New soluble precursors for the step-wise synthesis of oligo(p-phenylene terephthalamide) block copolymers are described. Kevlar-like aramide oligomers up to the hexamer (six phenyl groups) were prepared in a polymer-analogous manner. Activating the carboxylic-acid-carrying oligomers as carbonyl chlorides while reversibly transforming the aromatic amides into imidoyl chlorides gave access to soluble precursors. The dimer and tetramer precursor were prepared and used in block copolymer synthesis. Single-crystal XRD confirmed the structure of the dimer precursor. Above a critical rod length, the Kevlar-like rod-coil block copolymers show strong aggregation in non-polar solvents such as chlorof…
Relative strength of H-bonding groups on biodegradable polymer-based blends in solution
2006
The intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) and poly(styrene-co-vinyl phenol) copolymers with mutual solvent epichlorohydrin were thoroughly investigated by steady-state fluorescence and viscosity techniques. Fluorescence spectroscopy along with viscosity technique was used to asses the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between poly-(3-hydroxybutyrate) and its blends with five copolymer samples of styrene–vinyl phenol, containing different proportions of vinyl phenol but similar average molecular weight and polydispersity index. In the case of very low OH contents (2–4 mol %), as expected, both components of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) and poly(styrene-co-4-vi…
Connectivity defects enhance chain dynamics in supramolecular polymer model-network gels
2016
Supramolecular polymer networks exhibit twofold dynamics: that of their polymer chains and that of the transient bonds between them, which is further complexed when irregular network structures lead to local variation of both. A typical irregularity is imperfect network-chain connectivity. To assess the impact of that, we study the diffusion of three different types of tracer polymers in supramolecular model networks of four-arm star-shaped poly(ethylene glycol). First, we focus on tracers that carry three stickers and one fluorescent label at their four arms, thereby creating an inherent network connectivity defect in their vicinity. Second, we embed tracers that carry four stickers and fo…
Hyperbranched-linear-hyperbranched ABA-type block copolymers based on poly(ethylene oxide) and polyglycerol
2009
BACKGROUND: Until recently, hyperbranched polymers were thought to be ill-defined materials that were not useful as building blocks for well-defined complex polymer architectures. It is a current challenge to develop strategies that offer rapid access to well-defined hyperbranched block copolymers. RESULTS: A convenient three-step protocol for the synthesis of double-hydrophilic hyperbranched–linear–hyperbranched ABA-type triblock copolymers based on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) is presented. The Bola-type polymers exhibiting an aliphatic polyether structure were prepared from a linear (lin) linPG-b-PEO-b-linPG precursor triblock. The materials exhibit lo…
