The role of the disposition of the recycled polymer on the properties of films for greenhouses coverage
2010
Multilayer films, by using postconsumer materials in the central layer, i.e., multilayer composition: virgin polyethylene/postconsumer polymer/virgin polyethylene, allows to get a film for greenhouses coverage with good mechanical properties and photo-oxidation resistance, similar to that of the films made from virgin material and certainly better than the photo-oxidation resistance of the film made melt blending the virgin polyethylene and the postconsumer polymer. Moreover, the disposition of the postconsumer polymer containing oxygenated groups only in the central layer determines a significant slowdown of the photo-oxidation process of the multilayer film although faster than of the pri…
Calculation of Dependent Elastic Constants of Plastic Foams with a Pronounced Strut-Like Structure
2003
Seven dependent elastic constants of monotropic plastic foams with an expressed strut-like structure are calculated. For this purpose, the basic results of the previously elaborated mathematical model for light-weight plastic foams is used. The model includes a model cell of local structure for monotropic/isotropic plastic foams and an ensemble of structural elements, which allows one to calculate the seven dependent elastic constants, taking into account the pronounced polydispersity of the structure of plastic foams. The numerical values of the constants are compared with the available experimental data, and a satisfactory agreement is found to exist. As a final result, a full set of gene…
Dependence of Coefficient of volumetric thermal expansion (CVTE) of glass fiber reinforced (GFR) polymers on the glass fiber content
2007
In a Glass Fiber Reinforced (GFR) polymer, the coefficient of volumetric thermal expansion CVTE (determined as a sum of the coefficients of linear thermal expansion CLTE’s for the three principal directions) is sometimes much smaller than the value predictable on the basis of well acquainted models, such as Chow model, taking into account fibers anisotropy and aspect ratio.
Indentation test as a tool for monitoring the solidification process during injection molding
2003
An inline method for monitoring the solidification process during the injection molding of semicrystalline polymers is demonstrated. The method has been applied to various poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(buthylene terephthalate) (PBT) samples. The technique is based on a simple device by which an additional ejector pin is pushed onto the injection-molded part with a fixed force at different times during the solidification phase while the mold remains closed. The residual deformation (the so-called indentation depth) due to the applied load is measured offline after ejection. By the performance of indentation at different times during the cooling phase, an indentation depth profi…
Characterization of monopolymer blend of virgin and recycled polyamide 6
2002
It is a common industrial practice to blend virgin polymer with the same recycled polymer coming from plastic scraps that, in general, has not undergone relevant degradation. In this work, the characteristics of blends of virgin and recycled polyamide have been considered by changing the amount of recycled polymer and the presence of humidity and a stabilizer. Neither dry nor wet stabilized recycled polyamide samples show significant variations of the molecular weight, but the melt Newtonian viscosity of the blends are slightly different from that predicted by an additive rule, despite the same chemical nature of the two components. This holds true even more for the humid unstabilized sampl…
Preparation and characterization of new hydrogels based on hyaluronic acid and α,β-polyaspartylhydrazide
2007
Abstract Hyaluronic acid (HA) has been crosslinked with α,β-polyaspartylhydrazide (PAHy). The crosslinking reaction has been performed in acidic medium in the presence of various amounts of N-ethyl-N′-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC). All obtained samples have been characterized by FT-IR analysis and swelling measurements in double distilled water that have confirmed the occurrence of a chemical linkage between two polymers and the affinity towards aqueous medium of HA–PAHy networks, respectively. In vitro degradation assays have been performed in simulated physiological conditions as well as in the presence of hyaluronidase. Experimental data evidenced that HA–PAHy …
Modelling the hydrogen-bonding interactions in a copolymer/biodegradable homopolymer blend through excess functions
2008
A recent theoretical approach based on the coupling of both the Flory-Huggins (FH) and the Association Equilibria thermodynamic (AET) theories was modified and adapted to study the miscibility properties of a multi- component system formed by two polymers (a proton-donor and a proton-acceptor) and a proton-acceptor solvent, named copolymer(A)/solvent(B)/polymer(C). Compatibility between polymers was mainly attained by hydrogen- bonding between the hydroxyl group on the phenol unit of the poly(styrene-co-vinyl phenol) (PSVPh) and the car- bonyl group of the biodegradable and environmentally friendly poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). However, the self- association of PSVPh and specific interacti…
Dynamics of entangled supramolecular polymer networks in presence of high-order associations of strong hydrogen bonding groups
2017
Dynamics of entangled polymer chains in the melt state are deliberately excluded in most of the studies on supramolecular polymer networks by utilizing nonentangled precursor chains. Relaxation of the system mainly depends on the dissociation of the associative groups in latter case and nonentangled chains deliver nothing to resist afterward. Conversely, in an entangled system, relaxation of polymer chains and dissociation of associative groups can occurred parallel. Supramolecular networks based on an entangled precursor polymer with different levels of strong associating ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) groups are synthesized to screen the corresponding effects on the dynamics of the system. Bina…
Acylsemicarbazide Moieties with Dynamic Reversibility and Multiple Hydrogen Bonding for Transparent, High Modulus, and Malleable Polymers
2020
The realization of covalent adaptable networks with excellent mechanical and dynamic properties remains a major challenge. Herein, the acylsemicarbazide (ASC) moieties with dynamic reversibility and multiple hydrogen bonding were disclosed and used to prepare transparent, high modulus, and malleable polymer networks. It was found that the ASC moiety can reversibly generate isocyanate and hydrazide at elevated temperatures, that is, exhibiting dynamic reversibility. ASC can also produce the disordered multiple hydrogen bonds that contribute to superior mechanical strength for dynamic polymers. The hydrogen bonding in ASC moieties can diminish the energy barrier for the cleavage of dynamic co…
Architecture, self-assembly and properties of well-defined hybrid polymers based on polyhedral oligomeric silsequioxane (POSS)
2013
Abstract Well-defined hybrid polymers based on polyhedral oligomeric silsequioxane (POSS) with a variety of architectures have been developed, including telechelic polymers, block copolymers and star-shaped polymers. The synthesis, self-assembly and properties of this kind of materials are reviewed. Well-defined POSS-containing hybrid polymers can be constructed by living polymerization techniques, such as ring-opening polymerization and living free-radical polymerization or the combination of living polymerization and coupling reactions, such as click chemistry and hydrosilylation. The self-assembly behavior of well-defined POSS-containing hybrid polymers is also described in detail. The P…
