Creep response of a LDPE-based nanocomposite

2016

Polymer nanocomposites and their behavior have been widely investigated by several paths, including mechanical, rheological, and permeability tests, finding that several parameters (such as the polymer matrix, the nanofiller, their amounts, the presence of compatibilizers, processing parameters, etc.) can influence the main properties. However, less information is available regarding the creep response of polymer nanocomposites; in particular, few or no data are reported about the combined effect of different loads and different temperatures. In this article, the creep behavior of a low density polyethylene/organomodified clay nanocomposite has been investigated. The characterization of vis…

Multi-functional polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-functionalized carbon nanotubes for photo-oxidative stable Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethy…

2016

Abstract Nanohybrid (phPOSS- f -CNTs) based on Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) and Phenyl Polyhedral Olygomenric Silsesquioxane (phPOSS) have been synthesized to be used as multifunctional filler for polymer nanocomposites. The success of the functionalization procedure has been demonstrated via accurate spectroscopic, spectrometric and thermo-gravimetric analyses. The results reveal that a large portion of phPOSS is covalently linked to CNTs, while a small amount of phPOSS remains physically adsorbed due to the strong interactions coming from π electron coupling between the CNTs and phenyl rings in phPOSS. Small amounts (1 wt.%) of phPOSS- f -CNTs have been dispersed in Ultra High Molecular Weight…

Accelerated weathering of PP based nanocomposites: Effect of the presence of maleic anhydryde grafted polypropylene

2013

Polymer nanocomposites are currently a topic of great interest. The increasing importance they are gaining also in the standpoint of industrial applications, is giving concerns regarding their environmental stability and, in general, their behaviour in outdoor applications, under direct solar irradiation. Papers available in the literature have highlighted the different influences of different nanosized fillers, in particular clay-based nanofillers; however, few data are available regarding other nanosized fillers. Furthermore, the research on polymer nanocomposites has clearly pointed out that the use of compatibilizers is required to improve the mechanical performance and the dispersion o…

Photooxidation Behavior of a LDPE/Clay Nanocomposite Monitored through Creep Measurements

2017

Creep behavior of polymer nanocomposites has not been extensively investigated so far, especially when its effects are combined with those due to photooxidation, which are usually studied in completely independent ways. In this work, the photooxidation behavior of a low density polyethylene/organomodified clay nanocomposite system was monitored by measuring the creep curves obtained while subjecting the sample to the combined action of temperature, tensile stress, and UV radiation. The creep curves of the irradiated samples were found to be lower than those of the non-irradiated ones and progressively diverging, because of the formation of branching and cross-linking due to photooxidation. …

Photo-oxidation of polypropylene/graphene nanoplatelets composites

2019

Abstract The photo-oxidation behaviour of polymer nanocomposites depends not only on the photo-oxidation behaviour of the matrix, but also on the chemical composition, on the physical properties of the nanoparticles and on the possible interactions between the two phases. In the case of nanocomposites with carbonaceous particles, the main effect is a photo-stabilization due to the absorption of the UV energy and the radical scavenging action. In this work we investigated the effect of the presence of graphene nanoplatelets on the photo-oxidation behaviour of the polypropylene. The presence of the graphene nanoplatelets improves the photo-resistance of the polypropylene and this effect incre…

Recycled Polycarbonate Blend as Matrix for Development of Polymer Nanocomposite

2012

Summary: Secondary polycarbonate (SPC) is modified with various amounts (5, 10, 30 wt%) of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVAc) in order to reduce its brittleness. It is observed that at optimal EVAc weight content maximum tensile strength σM and impact strength AI increse by 14% (ωEVAc = 5 wt%) and 450% (ωEVAc = 10 wt%) in comparison to neat SPC, respectively. Addition of montmorillonite nanoclay (MMT) allowed further increase of elastic modulus E, strength and creep resistance of the investigated SPC blend with 10 wt% of EVAc.

Viscoelastic behavior of epoxy prepolymer/organophilic montmorillonite dispersions

2008

Dispersions of a bisphenol A-based epoxy resin with an organophilic montmorillonite (Nanofil 919) were studied by X-ray diffraction and oscillatory shear rheometry. X-ray studies reveal that the clay is intercalated by the epoxy and forms stable dispersions. The viscoelastic behavior of the nanodispersions was measured as a function of the Nanofil concentration and temperature. An increase in both G′ and G″ moduli was detected as the concentration increases. Furthermore, a transition from a liquid-like behavior, at low temperatures, to a solid-like behavior, at higher temperatures, was observed for all the samples. This transition is accounted for the formation of a percolated structure of …

Origin of nanostructural inhomogeneity in polymer-network gels

2017

Polymer-network gels often display nano- to microstructural spatial inhomogeneity of their polymer-segmental and crosslinking densities, especially if they are formed by uncontrolled free-radical crosslinking copolymerization of mono- and multifunctional monomers and crosslinkers. This structural complexity markedly affects their optical clarity, mechanical strength, and permeability, which is of central relevance for their performance in everyday-life and high-tech products. This review summarizes and inter-relates a rich amount of existing studies on the origin of this inhomogeneity. It arcs from early fundamental work in the 1990s, development and assessment of highly ideal and super tou…

Localized Liquid Secretion from a Photopatterned Liquid-Crystal Polymer Skin

2020

Liquid-releasing artificial skins are made from films made of a smectic liquid-crystal polymer network (LCN) photopolymerized in the presence of a photoactive azobenzene chromophore and a liquid-crystal porogen. The nonreactive porogen phase separates during the polymerization process, and the polymer forms a spongy polymer network filled with liquid. The liquid is excreted from the film when exposed to UV light upon conversion of trans-azobenzene to its cis isomer. Here, localized liquid secretion at preset positions at the polymer film is described. The design principle is based on creating a hybrid molecular architecture with both smectic and nonordered isotropic alignments in a continuo…

Scattering perspectives on nanostructural inhomogeneity in polymer network gels

2017

Abstract Scattering methods based on spatial and temporal contrast fluctuations in polymer-network gels, which originate from polymer-segmental density fluctuations, reveal rich insight into different types and levels of nanostructural inhomogeneity in these soft materials. Complementary contrasting as provided by light, neutron, and X-ray scattering allows such information to be obtained on nano- to micrometer length scales. On top of that, complementary use of static and dynamic scattering methods allows the interplay and effect of these inhomogeneities to be unraveled. This article interrelates a multitude of studies on the application of scattering techniques for analytical assessment o…
