The Role of Learning Difficulties in Adolescents’ Academic Emotions and Academic Achievement

The present study examines associations between learning difficulties (LD), academic emotions, and academic achievement among 845 Grade 6 adolescents (455 girls, 390 boys). Reading difficulties (RD) and math difficulties (MD) were identified based on tested reading and math skills in the fall semester of Grade 6. At this time, the students also rated their hope, enjoyment, and anxiety regarding literacy and math. Information on students' achievement in literacy and math, as well as their overall academic achievement, was gathered using questionnaires in both the fall and spring semesters of Grade 6. Experimental evidence for suspence as determinant of video game enjoyment

Based on theoretical assumptions from film psychology and their application to video games, the hypothesis is tested that suspense is a major factor in video game enjoyment. A first-person shooter game was experimentally manipulated to create either a low level or a high level of suspense. Sixty-three participants were randomly assigned to experimental conditions; enjoyment was assessed after playing by a 10-item rating scale. Results support the assumption that suspense is a driver of video game enjoyment. © 2009 Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.

Using Virtual Reality to Distract Overweight Children from Bodily Sensations During Exercise

This study analyzes the potential of virtual reality (VR) to enhance attentional distraction in overweight children as they experience bodily sensations during exercise. It has been suggested that one reason why obese children stop exercising is the perception of bodily sensations. Being moved by listening to unfamiliar sad music induces reward‐related hormonal changes in empathic listeners

Many people enjoy sad music, and the appeal for tragedy is widespread among the consumers of film and literature. The underlying mechanisms of such aesthetic experiences are not well understood. We tested whether pleasure induced by sad, unfamiliar instrumental music is explained with a homeostatic or a reward theory, each of which is associated with opposite patterns of changes in the key hormones. Associations among Basic Psychological Needs, Motivation and Enjoyment within Finnish Physical Education Students

The purpose of this study was to analyse the associations between basic psychological needs, motivational regulations and enjoyment within Finnish physical education (PE) students. The participants of the study were 260 Grade 5 students (Mage=11.86, SD=0.28) and 242 Grade 8 students (Mage=14.93, SD=0.37) who completed a questionnaire prior to their regular PE classes. The effect of an advertisement’s colour on emotions evoked by attitude towards the ad

Despite its importance surprisingly little is known about the influence of colour in advertising. This paper studies the effects of the three components of an ad’s colour (hue, saturation and lightness) on the emotions it evokes and on attitudes towards it. It is assumed that the influence of colour varies with the individual, whose optimal stimulation level (OSL) is considered a moderator variable. Analyses of covariance were conducted.
