Plural gifting of singular importance: mass-gifts and sociality among precarious product promoters in eastern Germany

In this article I explore and investigate the concept of ‘mass-gifts’ (Bird-David and Darr), based on fieldwork in eastern Germany among product promoters in wholesale and retail environments. After introducing mass-gifts, I show how they are employed by promoters for the intended purpose (persuading customers to purchase). However, mass-gifts are also appropriated by these precarious workers to create social networks. In so doing, I argue that they simultaneously recreate the social aesthetic of work in the state socialist era, where factories were a nexus of sociality – in stark reality to the social and economic precariousness faced today by promoters.

Frente a los riesgos del monopolio de significados sobre la vida en común, la sociedad civil puede actuar como fuente de reconocimiento y desarrollo de identidades, pero afirmarlo requiere que previamente se establezcan nuevos puntos de partida para el análisis sobre su significado. Apoyados en esta premisa, proponemos un cuestionamiento a la apropiación teórica y práctica que desde la dimensión política se ha hecho y establecemos la redefinición de lo cívico como el sustento para un tipo de pluralismo basado en la capacidad para expresar y conocer por medio de la razón.

Usability of Programming Languages

Programming languages form the interface between programmers (the users) and the computation that they desire the computer to execute. Although studies exist for some aspects of programming language design (such as conditionals), other aspects have received little or no human factors evaluations. Designers thus have little they can rely on if they want to make new languages highly usable, and users cannot easily chose a language based on usability criteria. This SIG will bring together researchers and practitioners interested in increasing the depth and breadth of studies on the usability of programming languages, and ultimately in improving the usability of future languages. nonPeerReviewed

Usability challenges in digital learning solutions

Usability is a key element in successful software. Ensuring the technical usability of a learning solution enables users to focus on their main task, learning. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the results of heuristic usability evaluations of digital learning solutions. Heuristic evaluations were conducted on 24 digital learning solutions from one country (Finland) and two country groups (Asian countries and Spanish speaking countries) concentrating on the usability of the user interface of each evaluated solution.
