Full parallax three-dimensional display from Kinect v1 and v2

We exploit the two different versions of Kinect, v1 and v2, for the calculation of microimages projected onto integral-imaging displays. Our approach is based on composing a three-dimensional (3-D) point cloud from a captured depth map and RGB information. These fused 3-D maps permit to generate an integral image after projecting the information through a virtual pinhole array. In our analysis, we take into account that each of the Kinect devices has its own inherent capacities and individualities. We illustrate our analysis with some imaging experiments, provide the distinctive differences between the two Kinect devices, and finally conclude that Kinect v2 allows the display of 3-D images …
Laser Triangulation 3D Point Cloud Sensor with Long Range and Large Field of View

This paper presents a point cloud sensor design based on laser triangulation. Both the camera axis and the laser axis are rotating, making it possible to scan on short and long range in high resolution. A third axis moves the laser and camera into a new plane. The design is tested on a working prototype. To the authors knowledge a similar design has not been presented before.

Abstract. One of the most significant issues in Cultural Heritage is the management of ancient buildings to monitor their state of conservation or to plan actions in their maintenance; this issue can be now approached thanks to the use of the Scan-to-BIM process. Il lavoro svolto presenta i risultati ottenuti durante una campagna di rilievi laser scanner in ambito archeologico effettuata utilizzando il sistema GLS2000 della Topcon. Le attività di rilievo sono state condotte per la documentazione e ricostruzione tridimensionale della Domus romana all’interno del Parco archeologico di Lilibeo a Marsala. Lo scopo del lavoro è stato quello di utilizzare e verificare le tecniche di registrazione in situ impiegando, in particolare, il metodo della poligonale.

This article presents a computer-aided object detection and localization method from lidar 3-D point cloud data. This topic of interest is in the framework of autonomous mooring, where the ship is tied to the rigid structure on-shore (bollard) for autonomous maritime navigation. Using shape and features priors, unlike matching the whole object template to the experimental 3-D point cloud representation of the scene, two customized algorithms: 1) 3-D feature matching (3-DFM) and 2) mixed feature-correspondence matching (MFCM) are presented. Genetic algorithms for 3d reconstruction with supershapes

Supershape model is a recent primitive that represents numerous 3D shapes with several symmetry axes. The main interest of this model is its capability to reconstruct more complex shape than superquadric model with only one implicit equation. In this paper we propose a genetic algorithms to re-construct a point cloud using those primitives. We used the pseudo-Euclidean distance to introduce a threshold to handle real data imperfection and speed up the process. Simulations using our proposed fitness functions and a fitness function based on inside-outside function show that our fitness function based on the pseudo-Euclidean distance performs better.
Approximate 3D Partial Symmetry Detection Using Co-occurrence Analysis

This paper addresses approximate partial symmetry detection in 3D point clouds, a classical and foundational tool for analyzing geometry. We present a novel, fully unsupervised method that detects partial symmetry under significant geometric variability, and without constraints on the number and arrangement of instances. The core idea is a matching scheme that finds consistent co-occurrence patterns in a frame-invariant way. We obtain a canonical partition of the input shape into building blocks and can handle ambiguous data by aggregating co-occurrence information across both all building block instances and the area they cover.
