Persistent spin and charge currents and magnification effects in open ring conductors subject toRashba coupling

2007

We analyze the effect of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and of a local tunnel barrier on the persistent spin and charge currents in a one-dimensional conducting Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring symmetrically coupled to two leads. First, as an important consequence of the spin-splitting, it is found that a persistent spin current can be induced which is not simply proportional to the charge current. Second, a magnification effect of the persistent spin current is shown when one tunes the Fermi energy near the Fano-type antiresonances of the total transmission coefficient governed by the tunnel barrier strength. As an unambiguous signature of spin-orbit coupling we also show the possibility to produce a p…

A paradigm of fullerene

2009

We study the dynamics of an electron constrained over the surface of a rigid sphere, with geometrical parameters similar to those of the C60 fullerene, embedded in a low intensity linearly polarized laser field. The model is shown to emit odd harmonics of the laser even at very low field intensity. For more intense laser fields, the spectrum presents odd harmonics and hyper-Raman lines shaped in a broad plateau. The spectrum of the model is compared to that theoretically obtained by other authors for more realistic models of C60. It is concluded that the model can be used as a paradigm for mesoscopic molecules in the fullerene family, particularly in practical applications where it is conve…

Light polarization measurements in tests of macrorealism

2018

According to the world view of macrorealism, the properties of a given system exist prior to and independent of measurement, which is incompatible with quantum mechanics. Leggett and Garg put forward a practical criterion capable of identifying violations of macrorealism, and so far experiments performed on microscopic and mesoscopic systems have always ruled out in favor of quantum mechanics. However, a macrorealist can always assign the cause of such violations to the perturbation that measurements effect on such small systems, and hence a definitive test would require using non-invasive measurements, preferably on macroscopic objects, where such measurements seem more plausible. However,…

Elementary Polarizability of Sc/Fullerene/Graphene Aggregates and Di/Graphene–Cation Interactions

2014

Elementary Polarizability of Sc/Fullerene/Graphene Aggregates and Di/Graphene–Cation Interactions Interacting induced-dipoles polarization in code POLAR allows molecular polarizability, which is tested with Scn/Cn [fullerene/ graphene (GR)]/Scn@Cm clusters. Polarizability sees clusters of unlike sizes, parting isomers. Bulk limit is estimated from Clausius– Mossotti relation. Clusters are more polarizable than the bulk. Theory yielded this for small Sin/Gen/GanAsm; however, experiment, reversely for larger Sin/GanAsm/GenTem. Smaller clusters need not act like middle: surface dangling bonds cause small-clusters polarizability that resembles metallic. Code AMYR models GR(2)– Mz+. A 24-atom pl…

Soliplasmon excitations at metal/dielectric/Kerr structures

2009

We present novel optical phenomena based on the existence of a new type of quasi-particle excitation in metal/dielectric/Kerr structures. We discuss the possibility of excitation of surface plasmon polaritons via spatial solitons in these systems.

Emission-Line Intensity Ratios in F[CLC]e[/CLC] [CSC]xvii[/CSC] Observed with a Microcalorimeter on an Electron Beam Ion Trap

2000

We report new observations of emission line intensity ratios of Fe XVII under controlled experimental conditions, using the National Institute of Standards and Technology electron beam ion trap (EBIT) with a microcalorimeter detector. We compare our observations with collisional-radiative models using atomic data computed in distorted wave and R-matrix approximations, which follow the transfer of the polarization of level populations through radiative cascades. Our results for the intensity ratio of the 2p6 1S0-2p53d 1P1 15.014 A line to the 2p6 1S0-2p53d 3D1 15.265 A line are 2.94 ± 0.18 and 2.50 ± 0.13 at beam energies of 900 and 1250 eV, respectively. These results are not consistent wit…

Observation of a unitary cusp in the thresholdγp→π0preaction

1997

A rigorous multipole analysis of the recent $\ensuremath{\gamma}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}p$ cross-section measurement is presented. The data were taken using the photon spectrometer TAPS at the tagged photon beam of the Mainz microtron. The $s$ and $p$ wave multipoles were extracted using minimal model assumptions. The predicted unitary cusp for the $s$-wave multipole ${E}_{0+}$ due to the two step $\ensuremath{\gamma}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}p$ reaction was observed. The results are consistent with one-loop chiral perturbation theory calculations for which three low-energy constants have been determi…

Vector description of higher-order modes in photonic crystal fibers

2000

We extensively study the propagation features of higher-order modes in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF). Our analysis is based on a full-vector modal technique specially adapted to accurately describe light propagation in PCF's. Unlike conventional fibers, PCF's exhibit a somewhat unusual mechanism for the generation of higher-order modes. Accordingly, PCF's are characterized by the constancy of the number of modes below a wavelength threshold. An explicit verification of this property is given through a complete analysis of the dispersion relations of higher-order modes in terms of the structural parameters of this kind of fiber. The transverse irradiance distributions for some of these high…

Observation of induced modulational polarization instabilities and pulse-train generation in the normal-dispersion regime of a birefringent optical f…

1998

Four-photon mixing in a low-birefringence fiber is strongly influenced by the orientation of the pump and signal waves with respect to the fiber axes. We experimentally investigated the dependence of the modulational gain spectra on pump power and polarization by mixing orthogonal pump and probe light beams in a birefringent optical fiber. With a pump on the fast fiber axis, a cascade of sidebands was generated in the regime of normal fiber dispersion. These sidebands are shown to correspond to 0.2–0.3-THz trains of pulses with complex polarization profiles. The analysis reveals that, at particular values of the input pump and probe powers and signal frequency detuning, trains of dark-solit…
