Can power corrections be reliably computed in models with extra dimensions?

We critically revisit the issue of power-law running in models with extra dimensions. The analysis is carried out in the context of a higher-dimensional extension of QED, with the extra dimensions compactified on a torus. It is shown that a naive $\beta$ function, which simply counts the number of modes, depends crucially on the way the thresholds of the Kaluza-Klein modes are crossed. To solve these ambiguities we turn to the vacuum polarization, which, due to its special unitarity properties, guarantees the physical decoupling of the heavy modes. A dense polarized 3He target based on compression of optically pumped gas

Abstract 3 He-gas is spin polarized by the method of optical pumping of metastables and metastability exchange in a low pressure gas discharge. At a pressure of p ≈ 1.5 Torr a volume of 1 l is polarized within about 30 s to a degree of 50% with 300 mW of incident light from an argon-ion laser pumped LNA laser, tuned to the λ = 1.083 μm resonance line. The polarized gas is compressed by a Toepler pump into a target cell of 120 cm 3 volume. In a first attempt a steady state polarization of 30% has been achieved in the target at a pressure of 685 Torr. The paper analyses the essential parameters governing this technique and pilotes its experimental realization.
A highly polarized target for the electron beam at MAMI

Abstract Polarized He 3 from metastability exchange optical pumping (MEOP) is used as an effective polarized neutron target for electron scattering experiments at the MAinz MIcrotron (MAMI). With the present setup an initial polarization of up to 72% has been obtained at the experimental area. A novel calibration technique will be presented which allows the determination of the absolute polarization within a relative uncertainty of 3%.

Abstract Neutron Spin-Filters (NSF) using gaseous polarized 3He have long been recognized as having enormous potential value in many polarized neutron scattering applications and, accordingly, ILL started a development program some years ago. This report gives an account of the present status of the project. Let us first briefly recall the reasons why the 3He-NSF is desirable as a generic polarization tool: Being a pure transmission device, NSF naturally decouples the neutron spin selection from other optical functions. Precise pion electroproduction in thep(e, e? ?+)n reaction at W=1125 MeV

The reactione+p →> e+π ++n at c.m. energyW=1125MeV and momentum transfer Q2=0.117GeV2/c2 has been measured. The transverse and longitudinal structure functions have been separated by varying the polarization of the virtual photon (Rosenbluth plot) with a 3 to 4% error. In addition the longitudinal-transverse interference term has been determined measuring the right-left asymmetry with an accuracy of 3%. The experimental data are compared to model calculations, and the sensitivity of the results to the axial and pion formfactors is discussed.
A new frozen-spin target for 4π particle detection

Abstract A new frozen-spin target has been developed, that allows the detection of emitted particles in an angular acceptance of almost 4π in the laboratory frame. The central part of this new target represents a 3He/4He dilution refrigerator that is installed horizontally along the beam axis. The refrigerator includes an internal superconducting holding coil to maintain the nucleon polarization in the frozen-spin mode longitudinally to the beam. Character of particle-hole excitations in94Ru deduced fromγ-ray angular correlation and linear polarization measurements

Linear polarization and angular correlations of gamma-rays depopulating excited states in the neutron-deficient nucleus Ru-94(44)50 have been measured, enabling firm spin-parity assignments for several excited states in this nucleus. The deduced multipolarities of strong transitions in the yrast structure were found to be mostly of stretched M1, E1, and E2 types and, in most cases, in agreement with previous tentative assignments. The deduced multipolarity of the 1869 keV and the connecting 257 and 1641 keV transitions indicates that the state at 6358 keV excitation energy has spin parity 12(1)(-) rather than 12(3)(+) as proposed in previous works. Summary Report of the Workshop on Polarized Electron Sources and Electron Spin Polarimeters

The workshop was a satellite meeting of the 9th International Symposium on High Energy Spin Physics, Bonn 1990. It was the third in a row of similar workshops organised by Ch.K. Sinclair in Stanford 1983 [1] and in Minneapolis 1988 [2]. About fourty scientists from atomic, solid state, as well as high energy particle physics participated in the meeting. The broad spectrum of different fields of physics represented resulted in lively discussions throughout the workshop. It is hoped that the tradition of bringing together physicists working with polarized electrons in so different research fields, started by Ch.K. Sinclair in the Stanford meeting 1983, will find its contivation in the satelli…
