Continuity and discontinuity of affective disorders and schizophrenia. Results of a controlled family study.
1993
Background: It is widely acknowledged that the genetic diatheses for schizophrenia and affective disorders are independent. However, there are increasing doubts about this classic view, and empirical evidence for a dichotomy of these two prototypes of functional psychoses is limited. A controlled family study of consecutive admissions was conducted to determine whether familial risks for schizophrenic (SCZ) and affective disorders were independent or overlapping. Methods: Index probands met Research Diagnostic Criteria for SCZ (n=146), schizoaffective (SA [n=115]), bipolar (BP [n=80]), or unipolar major depressive (UP [n=184])disorder. Comparison probands met Research Diagnostic Criteria fo…
Aberrant probabilistic reinforcement learning in first-degree relatives of individuals with bipolar disorder
2020
Contains fulltext : 215845.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Background: Motivational dysregulation represents a core vulnerability factor for bipolar disorder. Whether this also comprises aberrant learning of stimulus-reinforcer contingencies is less clear. Methods: To answer this question, we compared healthy first-degree relatives of individuals with bipolar disorder (n = 42) known to convey an increased risk of developing a bipolar spectrum disorder and healthy individuals (n = 97). Further, we investigated the effects of the behavioral activation system (BAS) on reinforcement learning across the entire sample. All participants were assessed with a probabilistic learning task t…
Personality patterns in subjects at risk for affective disorders.
1995
The main conclusions of this study on the familial links between personality patterns and affective disorders are: (1) The personality features with the greatest degree of symptomatic overlap with unipolar depression were more common among the first-degree relatives of probands with this diagnosis: thus dysthymic temperament and neuroticism are enhanced in this group of relatives compared to controls. Likewise personality features with a high degree of symptomatic overlap with bipolar affective disorder were more common among the first-degree relatives of probands with this diagnosis. Thus levels of dysthymic and cyclothymic temperament were elevated in this group of relatives compared to c…
Socio-spatial polarisation and policy response: Perspectives for regional development in the Baltic States
2022
Based on a relational understanding of socio-spatial polarisation as a nested, multidimensional and multi-scalar process, the paper applies a comparative perspective on current trends of socio-spatial development in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Comparing current scholarship and data on demographic and economic processes of centralisation and peripheralisation, we also examine political debates around issues of polarisation in different scholarly national perspectives. Despite variations in national discourses, our comparative perspective conveys strong similarities between the three Baltic countries in terms of socio-economic and demographic concentration in the capital regions to the di…
The Use of Rule-Based and QSPR Approaches in ADME Profiling: A Case Study on Caco-2 Permeability.
2013
During the early ADME profiling the development of simple, interpretable and reliable in silico tools is very important. In this study, rule-based and QSPR approaches were investigated using a large Caco-2 permeability database. Three permeability classes were determined: high (H), moderate (M) and low (L). The main physicochemical properties related with permeability were ranked as follows: Polar Surface Area (PSA)>Lipophilicity (logP/logD)>Molecular Weight (MW)>number of Hydrogen Bond donors and acceptors>Ionization State>number of Rotatable Bonds>number of Rings. The best rule, based on the combination of PSA-MW-logD (3PRule), was able to identify the H, M and L classes with accuracy of …
Biological activities of the LXRα and β agonist, 4β-hydroxycholesterol, and of its isomer, 4α-hydroxycholesterol, on oligodendrocytes: effects on cel…
2013
The biochemical and biological properties of 4β-hydroxycholesterol and of its isomer, 4α-hydroxycholesterol, are not well known. So, we determined the ability of 4α- and 4β-hydroxycholesterol to react with LXRα and LXRβ, and we characterized the activities of these oxysterols on oligodendrocytes which are myelin synthesizing cells. The effects of 4α- and 4β-hydroxycholesterol were studied on 158N murine oligodendrocytes to assess their activities on cell growth and viability, oxidative and inflammatory status. To this end different parameters were used: cell counting with trypan blue; identification of dead cells and cell cycle analysis with propidium iodide; evaluation of mitochondrial dep…
Absence of correlation between oxysterol accumulation in lipid raft microdomains, calcium increase, and apoptosis induction on 158N murine oligodendr…
2013
There is some evidence that oxidized derivatives of cholesterol, 7-ketocholesterol (7KC) and 7β-hydroxycholesterol (7βOHC), are increased in the plasma of patients with neurodegenerative diseases associated with demyelinization of the central nervous system (CNS). It was therefore of interest to investigate the effects of these oxysterols on oligodendrocytes, the myelin-forming cells in the CNS. To this end, 158N murine oligodendrocytes were treated with 7KC or 7βOHC inducing an apoptotic mode of cell death characterized by condensation/fragmentation of the nuclei, dephosphorylation of Akt and GSK3, mitochondrial depolarization involving Mcl-1, and caspase-3 activation. In contrast, under t…
Novel view synthesis for projective texture mapping on real 3D objects
2006
Industrial reproduction, as stereography or lithography, have a lack in texture information, as they only deal with 3D reconstruction. In this paper, we provide a new technique to map texture on real 3D objects, by synthesizing a novel view from two camera images to a projector frame, considered as a camera acting in reverse. No prior information on the pose or the shape of the 3D object is necessary, however hard calibration of the complete system is needed.

The human first cell cycle: impact on implantation.
2013
The morphology of fertilization events has been related to successful implantation by subjective criteria (pronuclei score, pronuclei symmetry and position). This work first described these events by time-lapse technology and then compared the timings of fertilization events (second polar body extrusion, first and second pronuclei appearance, abuttal and fading) in implanted versus nonimplanted embryos in a 2-year cohort retrospective study. A total of 1448 transferred embryos from 842 patients undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection with oocyte donation were monitored, 212 embryos from treatments where the number of gestational sacs matched the number of transferred embryos and 687 emb…
