Reassessing the evidence for tree-growth and inferred temperature change during the Common Era in Yamalia, northwest Siberia

AbstractThe development of research into the history of tree growth and inferred summer temperature changes in Yamalia spanning the last 2000 years is reviewed. One focus is the evolving production of tree-ring width (TRW) and tree-ring maximum-latewood density (MXD) larch (Larix sibirica) chronologies, incorporating different applications of Regional Curve Standardisation (RCS). Another focus is the comparison of independent data representing past tree growth in adjacent Yamalia areas: Yamal and Polar Urals, and the examination of the evidence for common growth behaviour at different timescales. Possibility of unconventional superconductivity of SrTiO3−δ

Abstract SrTiO3−δ can show metallic behavior and superconductivity at T It is demonstrated that by variation of the annealing temperature in vacuum the transport properties of SrTiO3−δ can be tuned continuously from semiconducting to metallic. We present measurements of the upper critical field Bc2(T) which show near Tc a positive curvature. This unusual temperature dependence is consistent with a model of weakly interacting charged bosons which condense in the superconducting state (local pairing). However, measurements of current–voltage curves reveal only small critical currents of our samples. This observation is discussed in the framework of doping inhomogeneities.
Atomistic Study of Surface Polarization in Superconducting Perovskites

AbstractWe simulated the surface relaxation of the cubic perovskite paraelectric SrTiO3 crystal. The atomic positions in ten near-surface layers placed into the electrostatic field of the remainder of the crystal were calculated. Two-dimensional, periodic slab model was combined with the pair potentials treated in terms of the shell-model. Our calculations show that Ti+4, Sr+2 and O−2 ions shift differently from their crystal sites. This leads to a creation of a dipole moment near the surface which might give the paraelectric crystal the ferroelectric properties.

Superconductivity is caused by an attractive interaction between electrons at the Fermi level that induces the pairing of time-reversed electron states to Cooper pairs. Conventionally this attractive interaction is mediated by phonons. Theoretically, non-phonon mediated coupling seems to be likely for heavy-fermion superconductors whose low-temperature dynamics is dominated by antiferromagnetic spin correlations. Unified description of 2+_1 states within the deformed quasiparticle random-phase approximation

We describe low-lying collective states in deformed even-even nuclei within a deformed quasiparticle random-phase approximation (dQRPA) by using a single-particle basis with good angular momentum. The statistical factors, accounting for the level occupancy, appear in the dQRPA in a natural way as rotation coefficients that take the intrinsic system to the laboratory system. We have used our model by performing a systematic analysis of E2 transitions from the first ${2}^{+}$ state to the ground state for all superfluid nuclei in the range $50lZ\ensuremath{\le}100$ by using a common charge polarization parameter $\ensuremath{\chi}=0.2$. Binding abilities of a chiral calix[4]resorcinarene: a polarimetric investigation on a complex case of study

Polarimetry was used to investigate the binding abilities of a chiral calix[4]resorcinarene derivative, bearing L-proline subunits, towards a set of suitably selected organic guests. The simultaneous formation of 1:1 and 2:1 host–guest inclusion complexes was observed in several cases, depending on both the charge status of the host and the structure of the guest. Thus, the use of the polarimetric method was thoroughly revisited, in order to keep into account the occurrence of multiple equilibria. Atomistic Simulations of the LaMnO3 (110) Polar Surface.

The results of atomic structure calculations, with a focus on the surface relaxation and polarization, are presented for the LaMnO3 (110) O-terminated polar surface. We compare results of the classical shell model calculations for four possible terminations, including (1 × 2) (110) surface reconstruction, and demonstrate that the latter has the lowest surface energy. The surface energy is saturated only when six to eight near-surface atomic planes are relaxed which is accompanied by the considerable dipole moments perpendicular to the surface. Results are compared with those for iso-structural BaTiO3 (110) surfaces.
Towards a full Heusler alloy showing room temperature half-metallicity at the surface

In this article we investigate the surface spin polarization in a 100 nm Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al (CCFA) film grown ex situ epitaxially on MgO(100) with a 10 nm Fe buffer layer by means of spin resolved photoemission. We show that a careful in situ preparation of the sample surface leads to values for the room temperature spin polarization up to 45% at the Fermi level. To our knowledge, this is the highest value measured so far at the surface region of a full Heusler alloy at room temperature.
Determination of surface and interface magnetic properties for the multiferroic heterostructure Co/BaTiO3using spleed and arpes

Co/BaTiO$_3$(001) is one of the most interesting multiferroic heterostructures as it combines different ferroic phases, setting this way the fundamentals for innovative technical applications. Various theoretical approaches have been applied to investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of Co/BaTiO$_3$(001).
