Integrated low drive voltage electro-optic Bragg modulator using a, periodically poled lithium niobate

2017

Periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) is currently used for frequency conversions using quasi-phase-matching, thanks to its high nonlinear coefficients and mature poling process. PPLN can also be attractive for electro-optic (EO) applications. Several studies have been conducted on PPLN-based EO deflectors, and recent realizations have lower the required applied voltage under hundred volts [1]. Indeed, for practical EO applications drive voltages as low as 5 V are usually required. For this purpose, we use a recent technique to realize high-quality isolated crystalline film out of LN [2] to implement an EO Bragg deflector with a drive voltage below 10 V. In this work we present an effic…

Self-organization of incoherent optical waves : Condensation, thermalization and repolarization

2019

The subject of this thesis concerns the study of phenomena of self-organization of incoherentoptical waves. This work is essentially theoretical and numerical and relies on different formalisms of waveturbulence theory, the Hamiltonian singularities, and different experiments. The first part of the thesis deals with the irreversible processes of thermalization and condensation ofincoherent waves. The phenomenon of condensation is characterized by the formation of a large scale co-herent structure (condensate) that remains immersed in a sea of small scale fluctuations (uncondensedparticules). In spite of the large propagation lengths required to reach the condensed equilibrium state, wehave i…

Sur le rôle des singularités hamiltoniennes dans les systèmes contrôlés : applications en mécanique quantique et en optique non-linéaire.

2012

This thesis has two goals: the first one is to improve the control techniques in quantum mechanics, and more specifically in NMR, by using the tools of geometric optimal control. The second one is the study of the influence of Hamiltonian singularities in controlled systems. The chapter about optimal control study three classical problems of NMR : the inversion problem, the influence of the radiation damping term, and the steady state technique. Then, we apply the geometric optimal control to the problem of the population transfert in a three levels quantum system to recover the STIRAP scheme. The two next chapters study Hamiltonian singularities. We show that they allow to control the polar…

Analysis of the Bloch mode spectra of surface polaritonic crystals in the weak and strong coupling regimes: grating-enhanced transmission at oblique …

2004

The Bloch mode spectrum of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on a finite thickness metal film has been analyzed in the regimes of weak and strong coupling between SPP modes on the opposite film interfaces. The SPP mode dispersion and associated field distributions have been studied. The results have been applied to the description of the light transmission through thick and thin periodically structured metal films at oblique incidence. In contrast to normal incidence, all SPP Bloch modes on a grating structure participate in the resonant photon tunnelling leading to the transmission enhancement. However, at the angle of incidence corresponding to the crossing of different symmetry film SPP …

Excitation and characterization of dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguides at telecommunication wavelengths - art. no. 69880T

2008

International audience; The excitation of surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waveguide modes in 500-nm-wide and 550-nm-high dielectric ridges deposited on a thin gold film is characterized at telecommunication wavelengths, by application of a scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM), and by utilizing the finite element method (FEM). Different tapering structures for coupling in SPPs, excited at the bare gold-air interface, are investigated with a SNOM, and the dependence of in coupling efficiency on tapering length is characterized by means of FEM calculations. The performance of this in coupling method is compared to an alternative excitation scheme, where the effective index of SPPs in …

Cross-phase modulation effects in normal dispersive fibers and their applications

2018

In this Ph.D., physical effects arising from cross-phase modulation between twoorthogonally polarized signals propagating in normal dispersion fibers arestudied and some of their applications investigated.First, a 40-GHz pulse generator is designed by sending two orthogonallypolarized out-of-phase sinusoidal waves in a normally dispersive optical fiber.A large power imbalance between the two waves induces a periodic phasepotential for the weak replica which turns the normal dispersive defocusingregime into a focusing dynamics, thus compressing the sinusoidal wave intoshort and well-separated pulses.A signal sampler and magnifier was then designed using the same principle, sending a high powe…

All-optical Control of Polarization State in Optical Fibers for Telecommunication Applications

2012

International audience; In this work, we report last developments in all-optical nonlinear control of polarization state in optical fibers based on a counter-propagating four-wave mixing interaction. In particular, we will show that it is possible, using a unique segment of fiber, to all-optically manipulate both the polarization state and intensity profile of telecommunication signals. We will also report significant results dealing with a new pump-free configuration, which give rise to a much easy to implement promising device.
