Resonant X-ray scattering in biological structure research

2007

The use of anomalous X-ray scattering of light elements like sulfur and phosphorus is of particular interest in biological structure research. These elements serve as native labels in proteins, nucleic acids and membranes. Their medium scattering power is drastically changed at their K absorption edges at wavelengths between 5 and 6 A where X-ray absorption excludes the use of open air diffractometers. The construction of a new diffractometer tunable to wavelengths between 1.2 and 7 A is presented. First results of anomalous scattering from sulfur in bacteriorhodopsin near the K absorption edge have been obtained recently. Their possible impact on crystallography will be considered. A compa…

3D digitization of transparent objects by polalization techniques in IR & by triangulation in UV

2011

Two non-conventional methods for the 3D digitization of transparent objects via non-contact measurement are reported in this thesis. 3D digitization is a well acknowledged technique for opaque objects and various commercial solutions based on different measurement approaches are available in the market offering different types of resolution at different prices. Since these techniques require a diffused or lambertian surface, their application to transparent surfaces fails. Indeed, rays reflected by the transparent surface are perturbed by diverse inter-reflections induced by the refractive properties of the object. Therefore, in industrial applications like quality control, the transparent …

Mapping of landfills using time-domain spectral induced polarization data: the Eskelund case study

2012

This study uses time-domain induced polarization data for the delineation and characterization of the former landfill site at Eskelund, Denmark. With optimized acquisition parameters combined with a new inversion algorithm, we use the full content of the decay curve and retrieve spectral information from time-domain IP data. Thirteen IP/DC profiles were collected in the area, supplemented by el-log drilling for accurate correlation between the geophysics and the lithology. The data were inverted using a laterally constrained 1D inversion considering the full decay curves to retrieve the four Cole-Cole parameters. For all profiles, the results reveal a highly chargeable unit that shows a ver…

Ultrafast optics in coherently spinning molecules

2020

This thesis reports on the study of unidirectional rotation of molecules and focuses on the rotational Doppler effect occuring in the course of third-harmonic generation in coherently spinning molecules. The rotational Doppler effect appears when a circularly polarized wave interacts with an anisotropic rotating object. During the interaction, an exchange of angular momentum and energy between the field and the object occurs, leading to a frequency shift of the wave. In this work, the frequency shift of the third-harmonic generated in unidirectionaly rotating molecules has been observed. An anlytical model developped in the mansucript forsees four kinds of frequency shifts depending on the m…

Development of electrodes materials for SOFC fed by natural gas / biogas. Applications to "pre-reforming" and "single-chamber" concepts

2010

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell is a device for “clean” electricity production from chemical energy. The new configuration called “single-chamber” seems to be very attractive with several advantages over bi-chamber conventional configuration: easier manufacturing, lowering of working temperature, possible use of hydrocarbons as fuel… Such configuration involves the development of new electrode materials satisfying new requirements. The evaluation of 7 potential cathode materials through several characterizations has shown that a compromise has to be found since one material does not exhibit all the requested features. A library of 15 supported catalysts (3 metals and 5 supports) was developed. These …

Etude par spectroscopies de RMN 23Na, 31P et 1H : effets de la teneur en sel (NaCl) dans des matrices alimentaires

2008

The reduction of salt (NaCl) content in food has become a matter of public health. However, the multiple functions of salt in food make the reduction of its content difficult. The aim of this work was to demonstrate the applicability of NMR innovative techniques in order to characterise the mobility of sodium ions (distinction between ‘free’ and ‘bound’ sodium), to bring a better understanding of the role of salt in the organisation of the food matrix (in particular phosphorous molecules in dairy systems) and to study impact of salt on the mobility of aroma compounds. In a first step, the 23Na NMR study of iota-carrageenan gels validated the quantification of total sodium (Single-Quantum, S…

Data repeatability and acquisition techniques for Time-Domain Spectral Induced Polarization

2013

The Time Domain Induced Polarization (TDIP) technique is widely used in applied geophysics, particularly for environmental issues, for instance for delineating landfills or detecting leachate percolation. Because the reliability of IP data remains an issue at the field scale, this paper deals with the factors controlling data quality and compares different arrays and acquisition parameters for optimal collection of data in the field. The first part focuses on repeatability experiments carried out in the former Horlokke landfill (Denmark), in order to infer the degree of which a signal can be reproduced over time. Results show a good repeatability, with on average less than 10% of difference…

Self-polarization of light in optical fibers

2015

The second performs the first experimental demonstration of the polarization domain walls which cancel the effects which degrade the intensity and spectral profile of a telecom signal during propagation. This phenomenon comes from non-linear coupling between the two orthogonal polarization modes of light propagating in a Kerr medium in normal dispersion regime, and causes a modulation in phase opposition of the two modes along the fiber. It is possible to lock two optical pulse trains complementary intensity so that the pulses do not suffer the effects of distortion occurring in the fiber in order to maintain the information to be transmitted. And a distortion-free propagation was achieved …

Self-organization of incoherent optical waves : Condensation, thermalization and repolarization

2019

The subject of this thesis concerns the study of phenomena of self-organization of incoherentoptical waves. This work is essentially theoretical and numerical and relies on different formalisms of waveturbulence theory, the Hamiltonian singularities, and different experiments. The first part of the thesis deals with the irreversible processes of thermalization and condensation ofincoherent waves. The phenomenon of condensation is characterized by the formation of a large scale co-herent structure (condensate) that remains immersed in a sea of small scale fluctuations (uncondensedparticules). In spite of the large propagation lengths required to reach the condensed equilibrium state, wehave i…
