Effect of surface finishing on the oxidation behaviour of a ferritic stainless steel

2017

Abstract The corrosion behaviour and the oxidation mechanism of a ferritic stainless steel, K41X (AISI 441), were evaluated at 800 °C in water vapour hydrogen enriched atmosphere. Mirror polished samples were compared to as-rolled K41X material. Two different oxidation behaviours were observed depending on the surface finishing: a protective double (Cr,Mn) 3 O 4 /Cr 2 O 3 scale formed on the polished samples whereas external Fe 3 O 4 and (Cr,Fe) 2 O 3 oxides grew on the raw steel. Moreover, isotopic marker experiments combined with SIMS analyses revealed different growth mechanisms. The influence of surface finishing on the corrosion products and growth mechanisms was apprehended by means o…

Advanced teleoperation and control system for industrial robots based on augmented virtuality and haptic feedback

2021

[EN] There are some industrial tasks that are still mainly performed manually by human workers due to their complexity, which is the case of surface treatment operations (such as sanding, deburring, finishing, grinding, polishing, etc.) used to repair defects. This work develops an advanced teleoperation and control system for industrial robots in order to assist the human operator to perform the mentioned tasks. On the one hand, the controlled robotic system provides strength and accuracy, holding the tool, keeping the right tool orientation and guaranteeing a smooth approach to the workpiece. On the other hand, the advanced teleoperation provides security and comfort to the user when perf…

Comparison of electropolishing behaviours of TSC, ALM and cast 316L stainless steel in H 3 PO 4 /H 2 SO 4

2017

Abstract In recent decades, new manufacturing processes have been developed such as Thermal Spray Coating (TSC) and Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM), which reduce or avoid machining of parts with complex geometries. This study aims to develop an Electropolishing (EP) process for TSC and ALM 316L Stainless Steel (SS). EP is an anodic dissolution process currently used in industry to reduce surface roughness and obtain a bright and smooth finish. The EP mechanism was studied, in a mixture of H3PO4 and H2SO4, for TSC, ALM and “cast” SS in order to determine the best conditions (time, temperature, potential). Special attention was paid to surface characterization by combining several techniqu…

Feasibility of using more polishable aggregates in dense-graded asphalt surface mixture: Case study of dolomite

2022

This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using more dolomite aggregates in asphalt surface mixtures that are typically used by West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH). The laboratory test results indicated that increasing dolomite content in asphalt surface mixtures resulted in a faster deterioration rate at the early polishing stage. In addition, asphalt surface mixtures containing more than 50% dolomite coarse aggregates would significantly reduce roadway safety. The field test results validated that dolomite shall not exceed 50% of coarse aggregate in asphalt surface mixture if the projected traffic volume is greater than 3.0 million equivalent single axle loads (ESALs).

Determination of Bisulfites in Wines with an Electronic Tongue Based on Pulse Voltammetry

2009

Electronic tongues were developed some ten years ago. These systems consist of an array of nonspecific sensors and a signal processing unit. The sensor signals are processed by pattern recognition methods which makes possible the extraction of specific properties from the sample. Depending on the calibration, attributes such as quality or taste can be determined. These systems also detect changes in the sample that they are not calibrated for which makes possible the detection of anomalous occurrences. Such sensor systems are suitable for process control and surveillance. Important factors are the sensitivity and stability, specifically the sensor's ability to respond to small changes and t…

Development of processes, qualification, and de-risking for the Ariel primary mirror

2022

The work carried out in the Ph.D. program focused on developing the optics design of the Atmospheric Remote-Sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large Survey (Ariel) telescope, an optical/infrared mission of the European Space Agency (ESA), whose primary mirror is an off-axis paraboloid mirror measuring 1.2 · 0.7m. The novelty of the telescope is that both the mirrors and the telescope structure will be made of aluminium, and the primary mirror will be made of bare aluminium without a thick hard coating. The choice is mainly due to the thermo-mechanical properties of the material, and the usage of the same material for the whole structure will allow better heat exchange between the mirror and the opt…

Study of the mechanical effects on passivity breakdown by local probe techniques

2006

This paper aims at demonstrating that a relationship exists between surface stress and pitting corrosion. The surface stress field generated by polishing was first calculated using a thermo-mechanical model and a finite element code. Pitting corrosion tests performed at the microscale along the austenite/ferrite interface using the electrochemical microcell technique were then analyzed considering the microstructure and the residual surface stress field. Mechano-chemical criteria are proposed leading to an enhancement of pitting corrosion of duplex steels.

High efficiency frequency doubling in fully diced LiNbO3ridge waveguides on silicon

2016

Nonlinear periodically poled ridge LiNbO3 waveguides have been fabricated on silicon substrates. Components are carved with only the use of a precision dicing machine without the need for grinding or polishing steps. They show efficient second harmonic generation at telecommunication wavelengths with normalized conversion reaching 204%/W in a 15 mm long device. The influence of the geometrical non uniformities of waveguides due to fabrication processes is asserted. Characteristics of the components are studied; notably their robustness and tunability versus temperature.

Robotic assistance for industrial sanding with a smooth approach to the surface and boundary constraints

2021

[EN] Surface treatment operations, such as sanding, deburring, finishing, grinding, polishing, etc. are progressively becoming more automated using robotic systems. However, previous research in this field used a completely automatic operation of the robot system or considered a low degree of human-robot interaction. Therefore, to overcome this issue, this work develops a truly synergistic cooperation between the human operator and the robot system to get the best from both. In particular, in the application developed in this work the human operator provides flexibility, guiding the tool of the robot system to treat arbitrary regions of the workpiece surface; while the robot system provides…

Influence of applied strain on the microstructural corrosion of AlMg2 as-cast aluminium alloy in sodium chloride solution

2012

International audience; The corrosion behavior of ISO AlMg2 (AA5052) was studied at the microscale using the Electrochemical Microcell Technique. The influence of plastic deformation on the corrosion resistance of this alloy was also examined. After polishing, pitting at small copper-enriched precipitates and structural etching were observed. After deformation, numerous slip bands were found in grains. After 5.5% plastic strain, the global electrochemical behavior of samples was significantly affected. Pitting potential was decreased in sites containing slip bands or in sites with large strain gradients (measured using microgauges deposited by lithography).
