Systematized impoliteness in the nonsense world of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass

2013

International audience; Theories of conversation very often revolve around the idea of cooperation, an idea dear to their founding father H.P. Grice (see Grice 1975). In a similar fashion, as Jonathan Culpeper points out in the introduction to his article “towards an anatomy of impoliteness”, theories of politeness often define the latter as a set of strategies “employed to promote or maintain social harmony in interaction” (Culpeper 1996:349). For those familiar or accustomed to this vision of conversation, reading Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1872) might be quite an interesting (and enjoyable) experience. In Carroll’s imaginary lan…

A cross-cultural investigation of email communication in Peninsular Spanish and British English. The role of (in)formality and (in)directness

2013

This paper examines the email discursive practices of particular speakers of two different languages, namely Peninsular Spanish and British English. More specifically, our study focuses on (in)formality and (in)directness therein, for these lie at the heart of considerable scholarly debate regarding, respectively (i) the general stylistic drift towards orality and informality in technology-mediated communication, and (ii) the degree of communicative (in)directness – within broader politeness orientations – of speakers of different languages, specifically an orientation towards directness in Peninsular Spanish vis-à-vis indirectness in British English. The aim of this paper is thus to invest…

Some effects of emphatic particles on Akan evidentials

2017

Abstract: Akan is one of the many languages which uses lexical verbs and verbal constructions to express evidentiality. In this paper, we discuss four verbs used as both evidential and non-evidential forms. Further, we discuss focusing strategies and the use of emphatic particles (EMPH) to support focused constituents. Our aim is to determine whether emphatic particles have any influence on evidential constructions containing them. It is observed that when the source of information – the entity from whom knowledge is emanating is focused, different degrees of attenuation/accentuation is demonstrated depending on the pragmatically derived information associated with the EMPH. Although in nor…

Interventions of speakers of Polish and British parliaments in the light of politeness theory

2021

Abstract The present study attempts to analyze the interventions of Speakers of Polish and British Parliaments in the selected exchanges from 2018 to 2019 in terms of discourse-sensitive politeness theory advanced by Jonathan Culpeper. He proposes to use three types of impoliteness that affect three types of interlocutors’ faces via a range of impoliteness strategies. In the analyses we consider the linguistic, personal, and cultural as well as political context of the exchanges against the background of the unique, historically rooted institutional circumstances, with a special emphasis on the role of different physical contexts of respective Parliamentary chambers. We emphasize the discur…

Patente de corso y La zona fantasma: estrategias argumentativas y (des)cortesía instrumental

2013

This study deals with the pragmatic-linguistic strategies used by enunciators (or enunciators-locutors), Javier Marías (La zona fantasma) and Arturo Pérez Reverte (Patente de corso). After a brief introduction on argumentative discourse and the opinion columns, the role of the enunciator and their attitude toward the direct and indirect addressee is analysed in detail. More precisely, the article will demonstrate how elements, including mode; neologisms; imperative; interrogative sentences and also the ‘instrumental (im)politeness’ (or ironic tone) support persuasive objective that this kind of discourse pursues.

W kolejnej części charakteryzuję grzeczność w relacji nauczyciel – uczeń, odnosząc się do polskiego modelu grzecznościowego i dwóch podstawowych zasad: autonomiczności i życzliwości.

What is an indirect speech act?

2019

Abstract The notion of an indirect speech act is at the very heart of cognitive pragmatics, yet, after nearly 50 years of orthodox (Searlean) speech act theory, it remains largely unclear how this notion can be explicated in a proper way. In recent years, two debates about indirect speech acts have stood out. First, a debate about the Searlean idea that indirect speech acts constitute a simultaneous realization of a secondary and a primary act. Second, a debate about the reasons for the use of indirect speech acts, in particular about whether this reason is to be seen in strategic advantages and/or observation of politeness demands. In these debates, the original pragmatic conception of sen…
