Social media as public sphere : an exploratory study of online political communication in Norway

2013

Doctoral dissertation, Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, University of Agder, Kristiansand 2013 This thesis presents an exploratory study of the use of social media in the Norwegian public sector, and contributes to the understanding of how social media can be applied to improve deliberation. The study is situated within the eParticipation research field. The motivation for the study is the reported challenges facing democracy, in the form of lower voter turnout, decline in political party membership, and a general lessening of interest for public issues and deliberation. Deliberation is seen as essential for democracy, and promoting deliberation could well lead to an increase in vo…

The Rise of European Administrative Space. Lessons learned

2012

Presentation on department page: http://www.uia.no/no/portaler/om_universitetet/oekonomi_og_samfunnsvitenskap/statsvitenskap_og_ledelsesfag/ forskning_isl/isl_working_papers_series Despite advances in contemporary research on the European administrative space (EAS), no widespread understanding about its meaning, mechanisms and significance yet exists. This research agenda paper offers a comprehensive conceptualisation of EAS and takes stock of accumulated lessons learned. It is suggested that the rise of EAS features a transformation of administrative order that analytically can be grasped in terms of four analytical dimensions: independence, integration, co-optation and institutionalisatio…

Her sitter 43 representanter fordelt mellom samtlige kommuner.

Cohesion and defections in the European parliament : the effect of cross-pressure

2009

Masteroppgave i offentlig politikk og ledelse- Universitetet i Agder 2009 The study on voting cohesion in the European Parliament seems to be heavily influenced by scholars like Noury and Roland, that argues for a very high voting cohesion in the European Parliament (e.g. Noury and Roland 2002). This view is balanced by those who argues that there is a bias in the data that are being used to determine this high level of voting cohesion (e.g. Carruba and Gabel 1999). There are some that argues that the co-decision procedure leads to a higher interest by the national parties on how their representatives in the European Parliament votes (e.g. Carruba and Gabel in Scully 2001). The more power t…

Agderposten og Fædrelandsvennens dekning av lokalvalgkampen 2007

2008

Negotiating the European External Action Service (EEAS): Analysing the External Effects of Internal (Dis)Agreement

2012

Presentation on department page: http://www.uia.no/no/portaler/om_universitetet/oekonomi_og_samfunnsvitenskap/statsvitenskap_og_ledelsesfag/ forskning_isl/isl_working_papers_series Analyses of the rising capacity for coordination within the Secretariats-General of the European Commission and Council have concentrated on their effects within these respective institutions. This article, in contrast, argues that the presence/absence of coordination capacities developed within an institution may have an important bearing also on the relations between institutions (e.g., in inter-institutional negotiations). The empirical analysis traces the negotiation process leading up to the creation of the …
